No kidding, SOE is really pissing me off with this, now the rare and hard to get items are on the TCG, it started I noticed with the server droid, no one complained, that item is a hard to find treasure map item. Now the Jetpack is going on it. SOE has thier heads up thier @sses on this, ignoring the crafters in game and making excuses that TCG does not affect game play isnt even a good lie. Hey SOE if you want to lie to your players at least make an attempt at making the lie believable.
SOE when are you going to get that pissing off customers time and time again, will ruin your company, not like your not in deep s$it already, you continue to push it. Two accounts closed, I refuse to pay twice for content and with all the development of new items and old rare items going towards the lotto gambling TCG I have no plans to go back untill thier is some real development to the game. And not to just LA's milk the suckers TCG card game.
what baffles me is the (yet again) complete disregard to the SW universe lore.
ive seen the armored bantha on a screenshot with mediaval fantasy armor with glowy stones and spikes and for a second i thought the image was related to world of warcraft; but the tusken raider who was riding it gave it away
Atm Im waiting for the structure/playercity updates on which I decide to try SWG again or not. But the rate at which new items are introduced through TCG, makes it more difficult.
Oh and yes, the armoured Bantha is weird medieval looking. The art looks completely out of place. Especially with those gems.
If only the armour would look like pieces of salvaged vehicle metal welded together or so. But the way it looks now, it belongs more in a medieval magical MMO.
Dang guess my jetpack will be slower ?
Or what do you want to bet they mess up the old jetpacks puting in the new ?
and they continue to insist that the TCG and regular game are seperate. Earning these from your free packs is also pointless because a new set comes out every couple of months and we don't get the old ones in our free month.
So more shinies for the fanbois to throws thousands of dollars at for a couple of pixels.... how sad and yes the crafters get shafted again.
This thread makes me happy.
Why? I often make mistakes - big mistakes, small mistakes. We all do it, but I am an artisan of mistake-making. But I didn't sub to SWG after my recent trial. Mistake avoided. Way to go me!
Now about that metal fork I am about to stick into the toaster ...
and Smed hauls in another truckload of $$ worth years of subscription and gets gentle pets on the shoulder, "well done Smed!"

Umm...in case you missed it that division of Sony is doing rather poorly. I wonder if he got that pat on the shoulder when 200k+ people quit SWG?

Wow! that animation showing the trading card game inviting someone to play is priceless. Right on the money (pardon the pun).
Also, I think the pats on the shoulder come from some greedy fat cat higher up the food change, who smiles when one subscriber pays a few hundreds bucks for decks of virtual cards that he'll never use.
Here's a good thread on how to get loot cards without spending any money:
How to make the best of the TCG without spending a dime
For those concerned with crafters, Game Update 9 focuses on improving Domestics Trader and Structures Trader while Chapter 12 looks all set for a revamp of Engineering Trader along with possibly implementing Droid Commander.
$$$ still has to be spent by someone in that scenario.

There will always be people with more money than sense.
I've heard of people spending thousands of dollars on booster packs (not boxes, which are cheaper) trying to get a specific loot card.
That's the worst possible way to get loot cards, at the very least you can check the TCG Posted Trades and just buy/aquire the required number of booster packs that you need to trade for your desired loot item.

By trading in such ways you simply facilitate the TCG mechanism but I am clearly in the anti-TCG microtranscation group especially when you already pay a monthly sub. If SWG were a F2P game then I would shut up about it.

Gamers have a lot of disposable income, I can't blame SoE for looking for additional ways to get gamers to dispose of that income with them.

Then they should simply come out and add the sony store to SWG rather than the loot lottery system. But then again SOE has never been straight forward and honest with their customers.

Q&A: John Smedley, President of Sony Online Entertainment - February 02, 2009
VGN: Would you consider expanding virtual goods into other SOE titles?
Smedley: We have. The conclusion that we came to is that StationCash won’t go into Star Wars Galaxies, it won’t go into Vanguard, and it won’t go into future games where it doesn’t make sense. It will be in EverQuest, EverQuest 2, and some future titles like DC Universe Online, though items we sell there in upcoming games may be very different from what we're seeling now.
We’re trying to hold the line about not selling "power," but what form that takes in DCUO remains to be seen. We might sell more costumes and different sorts of customization things. We’re still learning what people like and don’t like when it comes to virtual goods.

There are many things not said in that small statement. I doesn't justify the loot lottery either. Have they published the odds of winning the loot cards yet? Didn't think so.

Since when is this an additional way to get disposable income? It isn't like soe is adding tons of new stuff that they were not already adding prior to station cash.
SOE has simply removed a portion of the content they would normally add with chapters and updates and started reselling it to the subscribers. The subscribers are just to stupid to see this.
How on earth can that not be looked at as anything but total loss to players just so soe can make some extra money. There is zero benefit to players in this regard. Soe has stopped giving 100% of their update efforts to subscribers. It will only get worse.
I've seen apathy before, but badger you don't blame them? Who do you blame?
I think it was said to be 1 in 5 packs, I'll check though.
Like I said earlier, however, buying packs until you trigger enough random chance to obtain a specific loot card is the most inefficient and expensive way to go about obtaining your loot.
You can either get it without spending any money as detailed above, or buy the set number of packs that players are willing to trade the loot item for.

Just because they say 1 in 5 doesn't make it so. It requires 3rd party confirmation just like any other sweepstakes at least in the US.
However inefficient it is...it is happening and they count on that. It is part of marketing towards behavior and is what makes it questionable especially when it is marketed towrards minors.

Here's a thread on the TCG forums where players discuss how many packs of cards they bought, and how many loot cards they obtained. One guy (the OP) claimed he had discovered it is 1 in 5 after spending goodness knows how much money. Then pretty much everyone else that spent a whack of cash on multiple packs looking for loot shoots down his theory. Some guy figured he got one item per 11.1 packs or something like that.
If you want a sad look at how much cash people are flushing down the toilet looking for loot cards (especially vehicles), you can find it here:
http://forums.station.sony.com/strategygames/posts/list.m?topic_id=11815
Here are a few excerpts:
"I have over 650 cards and I have recieved two loot cards and those were my no trade ones for free. None of the cards I purchased gave me loot ones. I am having a very bad success rate on this."
and,
"Call me crazy, but I just bought 100 of the booster packs.
I opened them in groups of 10. Here are the loot cards I got:
1. Nothing
2. Gunga Vendor, Jawa Vendor
3. Black Corset Dress
4. Jedi Crest Painting
5. Nothing
6. Mechno Chair
7. Great Hyperspace War Bas Relief, Radtrooper Insignia
8. Nothing
9. Nothing
10. Glass Display Case, Clone Trooper Painting
Total was 9 loot items. That works out to 1 loot card for every 11.11 packs opened."
Apparently, not only does SOE not publish verified odds of winning, they are raking in more cash from people trying to figure out some kind of system.
As I said befiore, those people just have more money than sense, but then again who am I to tell them what they should or shouldn't spend their money on.
The novelty of the TCG has died down a bit now and the post you linked to is rather old, the initial gold rush is over and players are finding ways to gain loot cards that are a little more sensible in the long run.

That gold rush maybe temporarily over but I suspect there will be a resurgence when the next expansion goes live.
And of course if that fails to resurect sales then SoE could always introduce more effective ingame loot cards ;-)
What tends to happen is that players buy Booster Packs for the purpose of selling them for in game credits.
They may buy a box or two, open a few packs and sell the Loot Cards and booster backs for many millions of credits or for more booster packs.
This seems to be how most of the loot cards appear for trade on the TCG Posted Trades.
Some people want loot cards, some people want in game credits. With the people using the TCG as an RMT proxy, Loot Cards are always readily available for those looking to spend dollars or SWG credits on them and avoid the whole random and expensive chance element.
