I've read some bad business decisions doomed this game? What were they? Something about an IP ban..?
I just heard this game had released, pop over and I read these things.
I beta'd for a bit a year or more ago, but lost touch with the game, now I read its not doing well?

Basically they released, but IP blocked all of the largest markets (UK, USA, etc) and left only some obscure European countries to play, claiming they would release a separate set of servers for the rest of us. Needless to say, it's been a total disaster and it doesn't sound like they will make it very much further.
This is just what I've read on the subject, and parts of it could be wrong.
Huh. I wonder why they thought that was a good idea?
Probably got suckered into it as part of a contract with such-and-such publisher or some nonsense. Nobody in their right mind would do that unless they absolutely had to.
I guess so, must have been a shortage of funds, otherwise, who would do that voluntarily? Part of a publishing contract they had to sign to stay afloat?
Lol, the release in the US and almost the entirety of the rest of the gaming market still has yet to happen. As of right now it is only a few countries in Europe. This had to do with the client not being fully compatible with acclaims servers/game guard. That has been fixed.
The game hits closed beta for the US next week. The game is not even close to doomed. Even the European servers folks are hating on will have the ip restriction lifted off of them so expect the numbers to go up tremendously.

Really?thats great news.Does this mean that we now have a choice of which company to sub with?
That is what it is sounding like. It was announced in the most recent developer chat. Along with tons of other good information.
I believe it is happening at closed beta, but it might have been open beta. Either way, it is not far off at all.

is that on the main tcos EU site,or the acclaim one? I might pick this back up now if all that nonsense is getting sorted, this is a great game.
edit: yep,youre right

Some short notes from the chat:
Acclaim will start with closed beta next week
The ip ban will be gone when the CB launches
Acclaim and Frogster/Mindscape will have separate clients and servers, however you can use either client.
The ancestral quests will be worked on in a while (after the tuning of ail).
Oh. I was under the assumption the game had released.
So when do we in NA play?
Well,if they really are giving people inc the US a choice on where to play rather than using retarded multi country IP bans and strange country cluster servers, next week I guess.
Its actually been released in certain EU countries since last november,if that gives you a clue on how utterly mind numbingly stupid the whole process has been so far.And bare in mind that theres also 2 EU hosts both using IP blocks to seperate the community even further. If this is all going out the window, its great for the Spellborn community as a whole, and means that you dont have to go with acclaim if you choose not to which is a major bonus in itself...
The actual game doesnt ban the IP, only the account making website. Using a proxy browser anyone can make an accound and play regardless of where you are.
That said, licensing the game out for different regions isnt a bad move really, many mmorpgs do that especially the f2p ones. The bad business decision made was thinking the game is worth paying a subscription for. Essentially its a f2p game with low production values that they are trying to charge for. The game still feels like a beta and lacks quite a bit of polish.
They should have just put in a cash shop or figured out an alternative means of income since the game is a bit too ametuer to be a subscription based game that didnt have a very strong launch.
I have yet to see a MMORGP that is pay to play that has been "polished" at launch.
That includes War, wow, eq2, AoC, Darkfall. None of them.
The devs have said from the very beginning this game was built up with pay to play in mind and not an item mall.
With that said, The combat aspect of the game is surprisingly polished. Considering the playstyle of the game. I would say this is the most important part.

Use a german web proxy to register an account and you can play.
They released the game earlier in some parts of the world than in others. People in the "others" are saying, what, I can't play yet? Then the game must be a failure!
They're saying that on the Aion forums, too, in spite of the game being remarkably successful in South Korea. This game doesn't have the high subscriber numbers, but that's because it hasn't yet released in the geographical areas where the overwhelming majority of the eventual players live.

Spellborn Intl. are kind of crazy guys, I seriously wouldn't be surprised if it was in fact their idea.
All this ruckus encouraged me to not be interested in the game anymore.
Seriously, any set of companies that can't get their shit together after all this time doesn't deserve my cash.
They can take a long leap off a short pier.
DAOC
Lord of the Rings Online
Both had very solid launches and were fairly well polished games at release.
There are others that had decent releases but those two stand out in my memory as two MMO's that were really "polished" at launch.
In the Sci-Fi genre both Earth & Beyond and EVE Online had very solid launches as well. Though both had very small player bases at the time.
Edit: Oh, almost forgot... a lot of people say it's not an MMORPG but Guild Wars had a very good release too.

I didn't take part in eve or daoc's launches. I know daoc had a few issues though from guildmates at the time. I know Eve added alot after launch just like this game probably will.
Lotro did actually have a great launch, so you got me on that one.
I dunno about guildwars ;P
