I'm feeling slightly 'under the weather' here so I don't really feel like giving a review. I'll gladly answer the topic title question though... Yes it is.  :)

if you're so certain it's hot, then why do you want a review?

I dowloaded the trial, played for about 20 min and uninstalled it. It seemed OK, but the graphics were a bit like ass. Not my thing.

Yes, the graphics are complete and utter ass, even without DX10.

As a long time MMO player I am always moving around in games. This game is fun to play! I'm switching from WOW to LOTRO officially. I started the trial account 10 days ago and am very pleased with the 1st 17 lvls.

Coincidentally the movies were on TNT this weekend. While my wife was watching them  I was playing them.

Graphics are nice, game play is good. Quests are thought out well. They blend the step and fetch quests in with the lore and mission quests very well. The crafting certainly looks interesting. I like the UI tools at my disposal. Combat is a tad slower than some I've seen but it's not boring either. I like the chain moves.

The player community seems very mature thank God. Also no gold spammers!!! Popped back into WoW Saturday nite to check on my guild and was completely disgusted by Stormwind City chat in under a minute.

There are limits to what you can do with a trial account though. You cannot trade, send tells, use mail or auctions. Therefore grouping is a bit more difficult and it makes crafting stall at a very low skill lvl since you need things from other crafters. But I see why this is due to the nature of the abuse of a trial account.

It's not a simple game like WoW is at all. But it's not a overdone half baked game thats a pain in the ass to play. It's a very good, well thought out adventure game. It has solo stuff, group stuff and I'm seeing that grouping is definitely the way to go.

A good group of 3 to 5 players can really knock out the Book Quests in order speedily if they know where to go and work together.

I like the way the game is set in the LOTR world and employs the lore from the books all over the game. It feels like you're there which is what they aimed to do.

    Thumbs up from me!

See ya in game on the Landroval server.

When you download the trial, the game is downloaded with low res textures, while the high res textures are downloaded as you play. This allows you to get into the game within minutes, rather then waiting a few hours for the full game to download. Although you always have that option.

The downside, of course, if that graphics look at bit like ass during the first 20 minutes of game play.

To answer OP's question, I did the trial thing recently and fell in love with the game. It's a nice change of pace from other MMOs and it looks stunning, at least in my opinion.

    Short answer:

    Yes.

    Longer answer:

If you like the idea of playing in the world of Middle Earth, then you will almost undoubtedly enjoy this game. As the others have said it, gameplay is solid and balanced. Turbine has done an excellent job with delicately using all the lore of Middle Earth in a fashion that makes sense and doesn't screw up either the story or gameplay. For example, there is no "wizard" class. As the lore states, there were only a few wizards throughout all of Middle Earth. So, they created a class called Loremaster. He gets a pet and can do some small "magical" effects or sorts. Personally, I feel Turbine does a good job with everything it does (AC2 though a failure was a good game later on, it was just too late...). Try the demo, see if you like the general feel of the game. Then buy it and upgrade to the High Res client and take advantage of the beautiful scenery.

    Yes.

I played LoTRO for 6 months from July 2008 until the present and loved it.

About half of your experience comes from quests.  Quests are a significant part of the game, so if you do not like quests it may not be for you.

The main storyline quests include video clips.  The developers have put a lot more effort into quests than for most games.  There are also  many of the standard type of quests: deliveries, discover or find something, kill x number of monsters.  Some of the quests have some alternative clever solutions besides just killing everything.

You can solo or group to the current level cap of 60.

There is currently only 1 end game raid following the recent release of Mines of Moria which raised the level cap to 60.  More end game content is being tested will be added free.  Currently, the end game gear comes from a number group instances

Crafted weapons, equipment and armor is the best in the game until you get to the end game.

The main focus is on PvE.

PvP is currently a mess. The creep side (evil side) is currently underpowered compared to the freeps that are much more powerful following  of Mines of Moria.  Turbine is working on these issues.  An interesting facet of PvP is once you have a level 10 toon from PvE, you can ceate a level 60 creep on the evil side and jump straight into PvP.

You can download and play the 10 day trial for free.

Pretty much exactly what 'heartless' just said in reply to Trueth's problem with gfx... you have them set to low, they will look like ass... you set them to high, the game looks amazing.  :)
