Haven't eaten in 5 days

BalterBalter Member Posts: 1,015

So i haven't eaten in 5 days as i tried the first day and could not stop throwing up. Doctor is telling me i have a bad stomach flu and just to ride it out. I have been drinking water, but could barely hold it down until today.

He told me to just take gravol as needed and tylenol for my fever.

I can tell i have already lost a dramatic amount of weight because my pants that used to be tight around the waist now feel loose.

I do not feel hungry even in the slightest.

How long is it safe to go without eating?

Thanks.

Think you can last a few weeks without food. As long as you drink plenty of fluids and when you are feeling better, try to munch on something light. My son got sick when he was 3 n didn't eat a bite for almost 2 n a half weeks, but he drank plenty of water n gator-aid.

Go buy a keg of gatorade and you'll be fine.

Well it's not unsafe if it's controlled, I have not eaten for about 2 weeks when I was a kid because I have crohn's and I lived on infuses. But that was with constant doctor monitoring.

What you do need is iron tablets and vitamins so I would suggest you go buy them and ask how many you should take. Also, most pharmacies sell space drinks with food in them, it's easy to digest. I suggest you go buy these things at your local pharmacy if you plan on not eating too much.

Also, protein powder would be good to buy and mix with a glass of water, most pharmacies should have them too.

If you still can't eat in a few days and are really loosing a lot of weight, I would go to the hospital, getting fed through an infuse in your neck is no big deal and it gives you time to recover.

Wowa, that must suck, Truely I feel very sorry for you. You can go without eating depending upon your body weight. If your 70 pounds the  you'll die in a day or two. If your healthy, it could take you a few weeks.

I didn't eat for a whole week once because of the flu and lost like 25lbs without any complications. Depending on your existing weight this may be a good thing.

No pain. At this point my excrement consists of mostly liquid

If you experience pain in your stomach, use this link to inform you what crohn's is. I have had it since I was a kid and you need to be there the moment you get it. They have excellent medication for it but sadly many normal doctors don't even know what it is even though it's an incredibly common disease.

Also, there's things to avoid when you recover. Some things digest well, others don't.

    Things to avoid:

milk, dairy products, tomatoes, salads, mushrooms etc.

Vegetables aren't good digestive foods because you get very little substance out of them. Mushrooms don't digest at all almost, many people don't know that.

Fish on the other hand is excellent, it is high on protein and the fish oil helps relax your intestins a doctor told me. You can buy tablets with fish oil too.

    Anyway, I hope this helps.

You should by all means be regularly watched by a doctor. It might be a simple thing, but better be sure. Have you tried simple soups?

Please take care of yourself! Hope you get better soon.

I had something similar to your condition before new years... for me it lasted about 6 days.  Basically nothing would stay in my stomach and just run through me.  I drank plenty of tea and other fluids to keep the dehydration away and slowly munched on dry crackers and just imple cookies.  Eventually after about 4 days I began to digest food slowly again and from there on it improved constantly over the next 2-3 days till I started eating normally again.

I think it's just a case of a stomach flu as well.  I guess the doc has told you this already.  Just hang back at home if you can and rest and wait it out.  It's the only thing I can say.  Assuming it's the same thing I had it will pass.  If it gets worse, see your doc again.

If anything your body is trying to tell you something. Mother-nature did not create us to each 3 huge meals every single day and snacks inbetween. Fasting cleans the blood and the body , sometimes a week or two break from your body digesting food is a good thing. You don't always get sick because you simply catch germs , sometimes your body is trying to tell you something and trying to heal itself by being "sick".

Who knew you could get sound health advice from an MMO forum?

If you have a blender (if not, go buy one), take bannans, apples and something with protein (nuts of some sort) and mix yourself up a homemade smoothie.  Use OJ or Apple Juice as a base.  You will get essential vitamins, minerals and proteins in liquid form this way.

The human body can stay healthy for not eating food for surprising amounts of time. Consider those who fast. I know many, many people who have taken 40 days of fasting without eating.. ANYTHING.

A week is really, really safe.

Then you REALLY do need to re-hidrate. bear in mind that your body is not only suffering froma Stomach Flue but a lack of energy from not eating as well as a large loss of fluids all of this will contribute to making your illness last longer.

If you can drink a lot of fluid tho it will help your body regain its strength and therefore get better faster.

Chances are it is that severe gastrointestinal virus that ahs been going around. ALL you can do is ride it out. Make sure you get plenty of clear fluids( gingerale, 7up help a bit). The best thing to do is to flush it out. ANd contrary to what some of these people have said,  DO not attempt to eat any fruit, berries, juice ect at all, they will just increase loose bowl movements, further inceasing dehydration. SInce you have had this conditon for more tha 3 days you should make sure you get elctrolytes or your body will dehdrate and you will not be able to stop the loose stools. You can get electrolytes in Gatorade or pedialyte. If you have problems keeping those down in their liquid form you can freeze them and start off with " ice chips" taking them slowly to make sure you keep them down.

When you do get to the point that you think you might be able to keep food down, start with plain rice, or if you think that is too bland mix one can cambells chicken with rice soup, one can water and one can minute rice , bring to a boil and allow to cool. You should only attempt highly platable foods at first or it will be too rough on your stomache.  If you manage to keep that down the best way to stop loose bowl movements is to start with bananas, yea bananas will help you get regular again. SInce it has already been 5 days, this particular virus usually runs it's course in 7 days in healthy immune systems, but has been known to go much longer even  into months. If you do not have symptoms improve after 7 days since symptoms first occurred , I suggest you seek medical attention . IF you are too deficient in elctrolytes your body will not be able to correct itself on it's own and you may need to be given an IV. If a bacterial infection has set in you will be given antibiotics as well.  If the vomitting has become so severe that it must be stopped, they will most likely give you a shot of Phenergan.

Please do not listen to those suggesting you can fix this with juice, that will make this much more severe.

I think the record for living on just fluids is 1 year and 2 weeks.

Brittish man starting at 450 pounds did it as part of an experiment, lost 200 pounds.

Well of course if people are retarded enough to automatically assume the worst...it doesn't mean that reasonable people can't find a reasonable solution to their problem...there will always be hypocondraics.

Not just that, it leaves out many things that are considered for making aproper diagnosis. It cannot check lymph nodes.. hell most people don;t even know where their nodes are if you ask them. The only advice that site should give is to " seek medical attention" lol.
