Darkfall mechanics?

BluefishBluefish Member UncommonPosts: 96

Are there any MMOs coming out in the next year or so with Darkfall-like mechanics?

I'm particularly referring to the FPS-like aim and shoot style of combat. I really like how it's been implemented in Darkfall, bow and spell fighting are both quite fun and challenging IMO. Unfortunately it's dawned on me that I'm just a bit too carebear for this game, I don't have the time to put into games these days to be anything other than Darkfall gank-bait.

Going back to an auto-targetting MMO after Darkfall just feels like cheating now!

(Also like the skill-based, UO-like system that they've implemented, I don't mind it being a little grindy, and it also means it goes away from the quest-to-level style of many recent games which really bores me).

The Chronicles of Spellborn has active combat like Darkfall, although there is no active blocking at the moment.  You aim all melee, bow, and magic attacks manually, although with magic you can't move while casting.  There's active dodging and a very unique/fun combat system that utilizes what they refer to as a "skill deck."  Basically the desk is comprised of skills that you place on several tiers which then rotate as you use them.  Basically you set up up to 6 skill bars, each with 5 slots and when you use a skill on one of them, it rotates to the next bar(tier) with the skills you've placed on that one.  It uses a lot of tactic and planning and allows you to set up combos perfectly.  There is actually a combo system in place where you use an opening move, several standard moves, and a finisher move to activate an effect such as a buff or debuff for your enemy.  The game looks and plays great, with a lot more polish than you'll find in Darkfall.  However, it's largely PvE driven.  So, if you're looking for the sandbox feel of Darkfall with open pvp and full loot, you won't find it in Spellborn.  Other than that, it's an amazing game.  It's in closed beta right now by Acclaim but when they launch open beta (soon) the ip blocking will be lifted and you can choose to play on the servers provided by the other 2 publishers if you want.

Seconded. Mortal Online at the moment is shaping up to be Darkfall, only without the complete amature hour development, and with a much more mature community (at least for the moment, until the leftovers from Darkfall shuffle over).

I'd also recommend the chronicles of spellborn, if that game wasn't the new darkfall. I had high hopes, and was planning on playing it for quite some time, but they managed to hose that right up when it became apparent that the devs and Acclaim can't get their shit together, and the game is likely never to see the light of day outside of the handful of areas it's already released in. I'll be shocked if it launches for the UK/US at the rate Acclaim is going, let alone survives terribly long as the community has wondered off to various other games due to their lack of delivery several times now.

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Mortal Online is Free for all PVP with full loot, just like Darkfall, and the OP already stated he was "too carebear" for it....still you could try MO when it comes out, but you will still be the bait :)

The only way to get around this is to find a good clan of people to help you, it makes a huge difference in how safe you feel

    Thanks for the replies,

    tis appreciated.

I'll check out all 3 of them games as and when. I hope other devs take a look at Darkfall and evolve their own ideas based on it's best features (it seems to be the way the industry works!).

    Cheers.
