Actually, they do look that, at least the male humans. And the animations in LOTRO are very *very* repetitive and drove me out of the game.
Just because he is can't spell and is probably less than 13 years old doesn't mean his points should be discredited. Also the quests are very dumb.... and if you were a bandit, leaving stolen goods on a picnic table in the middle of a forest does seem kind of counter-intuitive
EDIT: Besides OP, you didn't even put a counterpoint in your response, all you said was that you've played WoW for a while, that you like LOTRO, and you don't think that the WoW player played LOTRO
I was never thrilled wit hthe character animations in LoTRO either....I thought they were veru bland and boring........While I would have said things different than this guy, overall I have to agree with him somewhat.......LoTRO does feel alot like WOW when youre playing and the game is wayyyyyy too quest driven........If you liked the books and/or movies I could understand the whole lore thing, but as far as just being a game I didnt think LoTRO was all that much fun really.........
his point about not being able to swim always bothered me as well. it kinda ruined the immersion in the game world. Flying mounts is a non issue for me. I like them but the lack of them doesn't detract from the world. I played LoTR at launch and then stopped and tried to come back. I quit after getting frustrated at not being able to do the main storyline quests because I couldn't get a group. I'm guessing it is even worse now in this reguard. Maybe someday LoTR will implement mentoring like eq2 that would probably fix this whole issue.
I agree. And im actually surprised that more games dont use the mentoring system. I played EQ2 for awhile after getting into it late and as you say the mentoring made it possible to join in with others who had been around a lot longer. One reason for my WOW burnout i think is because with it and most mmo's after they have been around awhile none of the lower levels group at level. If they have been around awhile they get a high level buddy to run them through the instances which to me is no fun. But to kinda keep on topic i will say that i have a decent gaming rig and find LOTRO graphics very nice. Not AOC quality but better than most fantasy mmo's around.
A mentor system is not required, as the holy trinity is also, not required for this game. It seems like your preconceptions about the classes and group dynamics are what is ruining it for you.
No offense.
Not my words, but thies are good wors indeed:
"I think the extensive hybridness of LotRO's classes is what I find so appealing about them. Everyone has something specific to do, but when shit really hits the fan, it's not up to that one member, typically the healer or the tank, of the group to fix it - it's really up to everyone to launch every bit of healing/aggro dropping/debuffing or whatever that they have. Everyone can do something to help out."
"A full squad with a Minstrel (heals), 2 x Captains (group buffs), Champion (DPS), Loremaster (CC, minor heals), and a Rune Keeper (DPS or Heals) just tore through 3 bosses and the rest of the content. While the content was grey to me (bosses were green) the rest of the group were at the suggested levels or -1 or -2 below. The net affect of our buffs to the group and heals was extraordinary. This patch increased some of the Minstrel's buffs power and duration, but it must have for others as well. Usually in WoW or EQ2 you would see one tank and the rest of the team supporting, and likewise for anything like heals -- everything is exclusive. With the ability of the Cpt or the Champ tanking or the RK nuking or healing it was amazing the overlap."
As for not finding a group, population has skyrocketed as of late.

WoW is a decent game, LotRO is a decent game. I still managed to burn out on both WoW and LotRO. I am not playing any fantasy game at the moment as a result: I'm back to my usual mainstay EvE. I find that my attention span in fantasy MMOs is shot, there isn't anything inherently wrong with LotRO. My mind drifts away from the game by the time I hit level 20 and I have never managed to get past it.
Some comments on the WoW fan's post:
-Some of the character animations aren't good, but most of them are. I dislike the stunned animations, and some of the Hunter animations are pretty poorly done. However, there are a lot of great animations, with quite a few of them being particularly elaborate, like the Lore Master ones: Leechcraft, your character wipes his/her hands after applying the leeches, for example.
-Linear quests? It's not like WoW doesn't have linear quests. I'm pretty bored of quest heavy games in general. Some of the quests are a bit lame, but WoW is just as full of 'lame' quests as LotRO. I found the quests in TBC where I had to rummage through poo pretty disgusting and denigrating. I know it was meant to be humourous, but I didn't find it that funny.
-LotRO has a great epic storyline. Many of the epic instances have a movie-like feel and quality to them. You even have scenes. This is one of the best aspects of LotRO in my opinion, and differentiates it from WoW.
-Why can't bandits have picnic tables with goods on them? WoW has ogres with teddy bears in their tents...
-It's true about the swimming, but I don't think it really detracts that much from the game. But perhaps I'm too much of an oldschool player: the early MMOs didn't really have underwater stuff. I think Trials of Atlantis was one of the first?

I agree. That message was very poorly constructed, but all of his points were valid and are in fact the same things that drove me out of the game. I don't care how good the textures are; I don't care about DX10. If the animations are crap, which they are in LOTR, I don't want to have to look at them for hours.
The other points are largely true, if somewhat exaggerated. The biggest problem I have is the incongruity with the way I think Lord of the Rings should feel. For example, the movies directed by Peter Jackson changes a great many things about the story (usually small things, like Tom Bombadil and Arwen and their roles), but it maintained the feel of the story. It felt like Lord of the Rings. LOTRO does not.

Well I can see now that the LotRO "haters"* (or rather non-players with assorted gripes I don't agree with) have all arrived to spray their scent on the thread. ROFL So much of what you all say is not even factual. It's opinion, nothing more, nothing less. It's your preference about something. Well....so is my opinion. I prefer LotRO to all the other games I have played lately. Why is this so difficult for people to grasp? It's hard for you to understand because you don't prefer the same thing? So what? You're not paying my subscritption fees, so I don't frankly care what you think. LOL
First of all....I didn't need to make a "counterpoint." Everything he stated, I disagree with and I said as much. Why does that require a "counterpoint." Take everything he said, reverse it....there's my "counterpoint." I'm not interested in debating the point that LotRO, in my opinion, is the superior game in many ways, apart from it having a far far far superior community of players. I stated that I gave four years of my money to Blizzard. I think that pretty well speaks to the fact that I also think WoW is a decent game. So what's the issue?
The issue is that some WoW fanboi got their panties in a twist SIMPLY because they saw that I had left WoW after four years and moved on. That is the issue. And personally....I find anyone taking such a personal interest in someone else leaving their precious game....a bit mental. Afterall....this person sent me a private message about it. This was not in response to some thread or post, so far as I know. It was just them "wigging out" because I'm sending a message to developers or something....that WoW isn't "all that and a bag of chips" to every gamer on the planet. They were that.....upset. Come the feck on already. I don't give a rat's patootey what someone else is playing. It's your box price and monthly bill (that is, unless Mommy is paying the bill). Either way, exactly how is that any of my business? I pay for what I enjoy....so should everyone else. And is sending a private message to people that leave your game of choice normal? Hmmm....well....it wouldn't be a normal thing for me. But I guess we're all different along those lines too.
*the term "hater" is used to poke fun, I don't consider myself a WoW hater because I no longer play WoW, that's just silly....silly llike sending someone a private message because they enjoy a different game than you do....same kind of silly.
Before someone jumps up and down about my WoW heresy this is my opinion and feelings about it. I Started playing WoW 1 month before TBC release and i'm still playing but feel with the way Blizzard is destroying more and more of WoW's experience with each expansion (ie. the pally and lock epic mount quests were reduced to about half there material (not gold) requirements in TBC then in WOTLK they pay 18g) that Wow experience is second to its subscription generation.
I enjoy PVE content (except for all those sifting quests gross!), I'm not a huge fan of PVP (I die to often lol ). I have not Played LOTRO yet (bloody trial cancellation). during 1 of my breaks I started playing COH/COV (enjoyable for now and then fun), but will be looking for a new main mmo to play.
Yeah, it's just a matter of opinion. That's why though I can never break the level 20 barrier in LotRO it seems, I still think it's a good game. It's just not my cup of tea exactly even though I should presumably be in love with it since I like the Tolkein books. It's a beautiful game too and I like the character classes overall. Oh well, I guess I need a break from fantasy MMOs.
