5. EQ2. Not a terrible game when it concerns gameplay. But the numerous graphic issues (mainly the poor, poor optimization) made playing the game an exercise in pure frustration.
4. Mabinogi. First saw it and thought "Cool, a game based on CELTIC fantasy!" Played it and though "Cool, little custom dungeons. The quests arent bad either!" Hit lvl 20 and thought "WTF? I can't do shit now unless I buy damn premium items from CS!!!11!111!1eleventyone!11!11"
3. Perfect World. Can be summed up in one sentence: "Go kill 45,000,000 Green Rotting Fearful Blasphemous Sultry Killer Sunbeatles, and bring me their mantles." Christ...
2. Tabula Rasa. Awesome concept, and I was kinda sad to see it go, but after 40 levels of shooting the same baddies on tiny maps... With no real PVP... Well, you know.
1. WoW. Why 1,100,000,000,001 people play this, I'll never know. Yes, I played for 3 months at release. Yes, I had a lvl 60. The only reason I played for that long was because I bought a card and felt obligated to use it. The game is nothing but instant gratification (which is not terrible), but that is causing the industry to be less adventurous with their games. Also, the community is the worst bunce of people I have ever played any game with. Seriously, pick a gamer stereotype, and you'll find them in droves wherever you go. And they're all goddamn 12. And all use vent. And none seem to have an indoor voice.
BEST
5. WAR. While not doing anything insanely fresh and new, it brought a cool way of doing PVP into the market.
4. AoC. Yeah, yeah... It LACKED endgame content. LACKED. Key word there. However, Funcom has worked out all the issues (for me at least) and given us a good game with a really fun combat system and epic sieges. Not to mention executions.
3. Guild Wars. Great idea from NCsoft here. "Lets make a highly polished game with great PVP. Lets give it a great story with cutscenes. And Let's make it FREE!"
2. City of X. Best. Customization. Evar!!!
1. Lord of the Rings Online. Great graphics, great story, great questing , great crafting, great itemization (you can tell a character just by looking at his armor), great combat, great skills, BEST community.
It takes up all five slots for worst MMO...actually it takes up 10 slots for worst game.
Didn't like L2 at all but that was mostly because of the horible grind and the amount of farming you had to do.
A lot of games I just grew bored of but I wouldn't put them on the list since I did enjoy them for several aspects and they don't deserve to be listed next to Furcadia.
Hand-hand combat on a ship's desk was laughable. Ship combat was uninspiring and predicatable, Hard to implement the ideas of a pirate-based world, too narrow-focused.
#4: Auto Assault
This actually had some potential, but was overly simplistic. People found it hard to feel attached to a car like you can with a character. Too repetitive with the car-vs-car quests - just not enough variety incorporated. The concept was just too 'out there' for most people to accept.
#3: The Matrix Online
Shamless marketing ploy to ride the coat tails of a good movie franchise.
#2: Earth & Beyond
I've tried to supress all the bad things about this game. Please don't make me try to re-hash them here!
#1: Dark and Light
The mother of all failures. Even worse for the settlers who paid 10 bucks for the right to be a settler. Webster should enter this MMO into thier dictionary under the entry of "oh dear lordy...."
Honorable Mention: Horizons (now called Istaria), Vanguard, Irth, World War II Online.
Best game that had tons of potential which ended up being a failure: Wish. I was one of the privileged few to play in the 6 day beta before it got cancelled for financial reasons. It was going to be great (easy for me to say that now). But alas, it was not to be. R.I.P. Wish.

2: Necron - Worst interface coupled with horrendous bugs. I was surprised to hear it actually lasted longer than a month.
I would kill you where you stand if I heard this in person. >=( Neocron was my #1 favorite MMO of all time. It has the best combat system ever, I just wish they had US servers then we'd be dealing with a lot less bugs, to be honest. The interface wasn't bad, but you did have to get used to it. Neocron had a huge learning curve. It wasn't meant for noobs, so... maybe this is why you didn't fit in? I kid.
It's late, or I'd add my own top 5. I'll revisit later.
Ah yes... good o'l Neocron. That game will forever hold a place in my MMO heart… Neocron was a fantastic game when it was realeased back in 2002. I too get all agro when I hear people trashing the game these days, but in all fairness, the current interface is terrible compared to the old RPOS HUD of Neocron 1. To be honest... I quit playing Neocron after they implemented DOY. I was sooooo pumped when I heard that they were opening DOY up... I also remember my first encounter with the damn DOY bots and Replicants... haha dead. What I was not prepared for was the extreme change that the Dome of York expansion brought to the game... It would have been great if an expansion was all it was, but they messed with the player models, RPOS, city layout, outposts, and Faction Headquarters to name only a few. I was a Fallen Angel, and to lose my base of operations only to be forced into the slums of DOY really sucked... but I was willing to overcome that. I just could not get used to the new character models/animations, and HUD. DOY was a real step backwards in my eyes, and hurt the core player base similar to what Sony did to SWG. I know that KK thought they were "enhancing" the game, but what they did for many players, was break the game even further. That said, there are some pretty cool things that have been implemented in Neocron 2... Hacknet being one of them. I would prob still be playing if they had not messed with the HUD and player models... I tried to go back last year, but had a hard time dealing with the ghosts of the past haunting that empty world.
Does Age of Conan and Warhammer Online really deserve to be in the list of 5 worst mmorpgs?! I guess those that do haven't played many! Roma Victor, Horizons, Shadowbane, Dark and Light and SWG are my bottom 5.
I think alot of people that put them on their list just had too high of expectations for both games.......The hype meter was just through the roof before both games even released......
WoW has an odd dynamic - Blizzard's continual changes to the end-game have gone a long way toward making the game more accessible to a wider audience, but every time they do it (which is about every expansion) they alienate their current high-end playerbase and end up losing most of them. I have no hard data to back this up but it seems to be that most people who have ever played WoW have quit, for one reason for another.
The game seems to live almost entirely on newcomers, and, to me, seems very similar to te 1990s America Online, which also had huge numbers of subscribers who would eventually get fed up for one reason or another and migrate on to another ISP, and I've felt for several years now, and still believe, that WoW will suffer the same fate - eventually they will run out of MMO noobs to recruit and the subsequent decline will be very rapid. I think even Blizzard might know this as Vivendi sold Blizzard to Activision a while back - why sell when you can keep milking the cash cow forever? Unless you can't milk it forever and know it - exactly the same thing AoL did when they sold / merged with Time Warner for buckets of cash.
Anyway.. back on topic... I don't really have a 5 worst (though I do have lots I trialed and never stuck with), so I'll throw out my five best...
EvE. EvE is what MMOs should aspire to be. Not in the hardcore politics, skill systems, depth of gameplay, space MMO sense, but in the sense that EvE knows who its audience is and makes sure to keep those people happy while still managing to broaden its appeal. EvE is successful because it doesn't try to be all things to all people, not in spite of that fact.
Underlight. Long gone, was obscure even its heyday. My first MMO, and as such will always hold a special place in my heart. The graphics were terrible, the combat was rudimentry (at best) but it had an RP-oriented community I've never seen matched before or since.
Pre-BC WoW. It was a better EQ2 than EQ2 was, which, along with several other major factors, was a big reason it got so huge so fast, and before Burning Crusade being elite actually meant something, aside from your total lack of a social life / insert other stereotypes here.
DAoC - I never got the level cap in this game, but it was my first 'real' MMO and I loved the pvp aspect, even before I really had a clear concept of such things.
3. FFXI- For some reason I keep going back to this game, only to leave a few months later, but theres something about it I love.
4. WAR-Only 4 because at release it was a mess IMO. Getting better and better every patch IMO.
5. Planetside- For just some log in and have some fun this game did it. Only couldn t justify the 14.95 a month on this one. Overall an awesome game though.
Worst
1. DFO-In beta I warned people not to play it, to shallow and nothing like UO at all. Need to buy a new mouse weekly with this clickfest. Gets boring fast
2. WOW-Just can t see the attraction.
3. Shadowbane-Would have been in my top 5, but crashed too much.
4. Dark and Light-Everyone has covered why in this thread.
5. Tabula Rasa-Was looking forward to this game alot, it failed to deliver in many ways.
It was really hard to come up with a worst 5 considering i program and can see good in just about everything.
That being said, ill just put down the top 5 im disappointed in.
1 - arch lord - holy cow... enough said
2 - Vanguard - might just be that i was holding out for another game to bring back the feeling of EQ.
3 - EQ2 - Same as above
4 - Warhammer Online - I really liked the game at first but the more i got into it and the higher level i attained the more it got repetative.
5 - Age of Conan - Marketting debaucle, good game very fun for a couple months and then its just went stale all of a sudden.
I think my major problem is i still remember the feeling of the first 4-5 years of EQ. I would sell my soul for that feeling again and i think it ruins my perception at times when beta testing or playing a new title.
Best
1- EQ - Seriously the Verant years and the first year or two of Sony's control where the most fun ive ever had in an MMO. Note to Blizzard , this new mmo your developing beter not be a casual fest you already have that published and running strong.
2 - UO - yes i put UO at number 2 sorry it was awesome but as soon as i played EQ my UO time was over for good.
3 - DAoC - Awesome fun and exciting and still is today but it just wasnt quite enough to hold my attention.
4 - EvE - Great game and IP.
5 - WoW - Seriously 11.5 mil strong they brought casual to the mainstream and dethroned the giant of the time, they deserve props.
Just my list , take it how you want to. Personally i miss games meaning something. I miss spending hours kiting and farming and sitting around chatting while waiting on a camp to open up. I guess i feel we are devoid of a game that requires any real dedication. "shrug"
1) Darkfall Online - THE absolute WORST launch EVER of a game mixed with insane queue times just to get into their 1, yes 1, pathetic server. One of the most amateurish rubbish examples of gaming I've ever seen. The pvp even sucks and that is the purpose of the game.
2) Shadowbane - Extremely fun pvp but terrible graphics, too many crashes, horrible movement system.
3) Star Wars Galaxies - The plethora of changes in this game made what could have been one of the best ever into garbage. Keeping up with SOE got to be way too much. I hope Bioware has learned from SOE's mistakes.
4) World War II Online - Bad graphics and not so good gameplay. I still can't understand how people like this game after all this time.
5) Anarchy Online - Still one of the worst launches in gaming history and just couldn't recover enough for me to make it fun after that.
BEST
1) EQ - No game has ever captured the feeling of adventure and exploration I felt in this game. It may be in large part due to it being my first MMORPG experience though.
2) Dark Age of Camelot - Still one of the best pvp (RVR) systems ever. Class balancing was brutal and frustrating but the game had a lot going for it and was lots of fun for quite some time.
3) PlanetSide - The first true MMOFPS. This game is still fun to this day after all this time! I still log on and play and that says all you need to know. SOE is killing this game with not marketing or developing it. It could have been even better.
4) Warhammer Online - I enjoy the pvp in this game a lot since it is a slight throwback to the DAoC RVR being developed by Mythic and all. The class balancing has been very frustrating but overall the game is a hoot to play.
5) EQ 2 - This game was decent at release and very beautiful for its time despite the bad character models. SOE has done a lot of work though and really improved the game a lot to where the player character models are much better looking and the game has a lot more content. This is actually one of the better games out there now if people would only come back and give it another chance.
Guildwars: gameplay is boring, the graphics are ugly and click to move controls, ewww.
AOC: HUGE dissapointment with the zones and complete lack of itemization.
DDO: A horrible representation of D&D
Vanguard at launch: Nuff said
Warhammer: good idea on paper, but the complete lack of connectivity you should feel in a mmo was missing.
My Best:
WoW: The game I keep coming back to. I think its the combat gameplay that keeps me drawn to it, until something better comes out like SW:TOR, AION, Warhammer 40k, and 38 studios new IP mmo.
EQ2: Great diversity, great social aspects like housing etc.
LOTRO: Great quests and beutiful enviroments.
SWG Pre NGE: nuff said
EVE: The uniquness and total freedom you feel when playing.
Maple Story-A game ruined by horrible grinds and a terrible community
Perfect World-Could've been nice, but was ruined by un-inventive PvP and useless PvE
Warhammer Online-Almost good enough, but lack of polish and class balance plus an RvR system that is terribly implemented=Epic Fail
D&D Online- a group based game where ever instance has a Solo Option....what genius thought this up
LOTRO-Un-inspired, un-inventive, and plain boring.
Best
Guild Wars-Cool missions, inspired quests, and a decent community, plus amazing visuals
Runescape-Say what you want about this game, but its sandbox style stats and awesome quests were fun
Final Fantasy XI-One of the best communities, unique controls, easy grouping system, and huge class variety+dual class, and it's available for 3 platforms
WoW-decent graphics, but fun end-game content as well as good community when in a guild
Runes of Magic-Interesting dual class system, good graphics, nice guild UI and nice PvE content.
Worst: 1. Antlantica Online - turned base apparently not my thing, and I hate those asian graphics, makes me throw up in my mouth.
2. LotR - Just something missing, lack of classes, depth, and combat was weird for me, really can't put my finger on it.
3. Darkfall - I know its early, but maybe ffa pvp and bad animations aren't for me.
4. DDO- Graphicss looked washed out and the lack of an open world has always bothered me. Very dissapointing personally.
5. Auto Assualt - has some fun things, but ultimately a one-trick pony.
Favorites 1. Everquest - My first and always my favorite,(Played for four years) if for no other reason than the memories. Don't play it anymore, it seems to have lost its soul. Please bring back Classic EQ!!
2. Vanguard- yes I love this game and has been my game of choice for last year. Buggy at times, but deep, varied class and race combos, large open world, beautiful vistas- This game made me enjoy playing a healer for the first time ever(disciples rule). Group dynamics are top notch. My fav for the forseeable future
3. WoW, hmm go figure I would put WoW with EQ, but WoW has its good qualities, I played it for a year, the pvp isn't bad and lots of options and things in general to do, ultimately I blame WoW for ending my EQ fun, in that my guild and friends bailed EQ for WoW, so there is some resentment. But, I will give it props for what it is a game for the masses.
No 4 or 5, can't think of any others I like, haven't played AoC or Warhammer yet.
3. EQ2 - never figured out this game. Successor to EQ1 or Barbie online? Wow clone in the end.
For the record, Everquest 2 was released before World of Warcraft so if anything WoW is a EQ2 clone.
Eq2 launched on Nov 8 , Wow Launched on Nov 14 2004 - come on.
They borrowed from each other heavily during developement.
EVERYONE and I mean EVERYONe has forgotten that WoW and EQ 2 were going head to head in the beginning. It wasnt until EQ2 tanked relative to WoW that the tune changed and EQ 2 was wowified and nerfed down to the game it is now today.
The Best > 1. DAoC (Pre-ToA) 2. UO (Pre-Trammel) 3. LOTRO 4. Vanguard 5. WoW (The first year only)
Oh wow.. Bored in the first week, all of the above. Who really wants to play this crap? God.. Try some Lineage2.
No offense, but Lineage 2 was probably the only mmo that I truly hated. Only redeeming quality was the armor art in my opinion. I never tried some of the obscure mmo's that people have posted here but the main stream ones I always enjoyed for a bit, even if I got bored of them after a month, still had fun.
3. WoW.-i'd rather stuff my unit in a blender that play this cartoon.
4. horizons-horrible. wow.
5. UO. I played many many years ago and they just couldn't control the rampant pk kiddies. Horrible.
Best in no particular order.
1. Eq1-the grand daddy of 3d mmo's.
2. VGSOH --even with its many problems, it was a beautiful game.
3. Lotro. Greatest fiction ever written, translated well to mmo form.
4. eq2. As linear as it is and as easy at it is, it was a fun game. Sadly the replayability is somewhat lost on alts as the world is too small.
5. Daoc. Didn't get too far in this game, but there was always something very magical about this game. It felt like the world was alive and vibrant, even if the graphics were old.

4. Darkfall (Opinion, I won't play a game if the company sucks)
3. WoW (Sorry but it's bland and it brings in more immature brats then any game I've seen in my life)
Really most of the games I've played are free to plays sadly, number 5 pretty much sums up my list.
Only Mmorpgs I've really enjoyed were Lotro and Guildwars (Even if it's not classified as an mmo)
I even had fun with Runescape for a while.

My Worst:
Worst
From my experiences:
The Worst >
1. DnL
2. Irth Online
3. Horizons
4. Lineage 2 (Bots)
5. WoW (only after the first year, by then too many kiddies and immature players were attracted to the game. I hated general chat channels)
The Best >
1. DAoC (Pre-ToA)
2. UO (Pre-Trammel)
3. LOTRO
4. Vanguard
5. WoW (The first year only)
For the record, Everquest 2 was released before World of Warcraft so if anything WoW is a EQ2 clone.

Hmm..How long did you play D&D online..?
Only the beginner quests up to about lvl 2 has a solo option
worst for me in no particular order.
1. asherons call-about as bland as they ever came
2. DDO-snoozer
