Anti-Eula Policy (post)
I am just making a comparison here, if my destruction warhammer guild or my wow guild were brought up on these charges an entire swathe of 50 odd people would be banned from the game. Infact most mmorpg's apart from this one.

You may not use sexually explicit language.
You may not post or link to any sexually explicit, harmful, threatening, imagery or content.
Please note that within the game there is an anti swear option that blocks the majority of content. Sure forums should be exempt cause they can be accessed by minors but in today's age when you get home with a beer in your hand you want to be able to talk trash with your mates in a group/guild channel.
This means like me if you invite someone to your group to play with you and they don't like what they see instead of just leaving and saying sorry folks dont like it Im off they then can police you and get you a warning or banned. I am not banned but I have a warning now from some random person who reported me for talking with some friends.
Please note I have not spammed public channels, I have not harrassed someone by my own agenda nor used whispers this is purely from a team chat. This game now isn't for me QQ more perhaps but thats it.
This notification is a formal warning regarding the use of inappropriate language on your account. Please be aware that repeated or serious violations of the rules may lead to more serious measures, which could include a temporary or even permanent suspension of the account.
Instead of campaigning for this game and its architect system I will now be campaigning against it entirely and vocally.
Comments
...I'm a bit confused. Both games you mentioned, Warhammer and WoW, have pretty much the same CoC rules re: swearing. I know people that got spanked for that exact reason in both games. One of them more than once, so the final spanking was so hard he got banned (WoW).
I might be missing something?
Could possibly be a roleplay server? My guild's welcome message is something I cannot post here and they are the no.2 raid guild on the server with no warnings or text changes.
Also many many parties I have been in have involved heavy sexual content with women joining in the conversation.
I will look up wows rules.
Well, just like you found in CoH, it all depends on if someone reports you or not.
If your guild is cool with it, then there shouldn't ever be a problem. I know I've had a pretty foul mouth at times in both group and guild settings in many games where doing so broke the rules... just it's usually with people I know pretty well. Sounds like you just got petitioned by a prude or someone overreacting or trying to get you for something.
I think your spot on there.
Might look at Age of conan if they have naked chicks swearing/sexual content wont be a problem.
? I'm confused aswell, every MMO out there has rules of conduct that include sexually explicit chat, however your forgetting that this only applies to ppl who do not want to hear cyber sex chat or personal sex talk or whatever going over the general chat or in earshot of those ppl, you can cyber/swear or whatever to your hearts content in PM's or guild chat if that is how your guild swings.
Personally I don't feel the need to be sexually explicit while playing a game as I have 3 children that wander past my screen from time to time and I'm also 39 yrs old and a little too old to start talking as if I was in the school-yard again.
But so long as you keep that type of language to your own peer grp then you should not be getting banned and in fact I've not really heard of that happening and I played CoH/V for about a year.
The game is rated 18 plus so ppl who are playing that game know what to expect content wise and how ppl will talk in the game, in that situation the game will allow it, obvisouly it won't allow sexual harrassment though, so you could still find yourself in deep trouble if someone acused you of that if they wanted to get around the rules of conduct.
But in games that have a teen rating you've got to abide by the more strict rules when using sexually explicit language, even though ofc every teen does it in RL.
I love dirty talks. I love dirty words. My girlfriends knows it, my friends knows it, some of them even think I'm a little crazy, but I do understand not everybody likes what I like. I'm the dirty talker, I know I should not use this vocabulary with some people until I know they are not offended by this words. And no, it's not your freedom of speech, it's your education as an adult.
Im not campaigning for my freedom of speech, my wife owns that. My basic point is in a team of adults where things are discussed of an adult nature and someone else joins, instead of just quitting and saying hey folks you know what not for me but ty for invite they then get these people's account's hammered.
Global chat, broadcast chat, even help etc. Warn them ban them tell them to stop, but in the context of a guild or team chat I think the rules need to be more relaxed. There are enough police in the world, we don't need more to use rules to their advantage.
Especially Villain or Hero Group chat (like a guild) should be exempt from everything bar rascism. Heck even slap a health warning for groups electing to be potty mouths, aka you are joining an adult themed group please click ok if you agree with this. Even add the tool to teams.
In a couple of years most modern mmorpg's will use voice software within their game, I'd love to see that policed. Its time to move with the future or get left behind.
Have you been banned then from CoH/V for using sexually explicit language?
No I haven't, got a warning though for basically saying another word for manhood and from a discussion regarding the preference to shaved parts.
It was in a team channel with friends that a random joined.
I will add this experience was from playing my villain rather than my hero, Im supposed to be flipping evil aren't I?
Using RP as a means to do and say what you want does not give anyone a freepass to ignore the code of conduct of any game, RP has been used as an excuse countless times and has been dismissed just as quickly by many a GM, and tbh it's rather niave to think you could use RP in that way to get around the system.
I didn't say I was using RP and in fact this came from one trashy conversation that involved no RP whatsoever.
I am not trying to hide behind that excuse at all.
Meh, every game has those rules, its to protect the minors and the saints.
You do not cyber at the galaxie statue.. (hm,..tho the cat girls can get curly ) , the same as you do not spam some stupit message .
It always will be a grey area.. , maybe you think kissing is to sexual for a mmo.. yet every mmo has some kind of kiss emote.
Bin part of a guild in swg (rp) that had some big adult tropics. everyone joining or just wandering in knew or was told so.
at some point someone took offence and filed a report and the gm responce was that he should not go to a comunity that is clearly using mature content as said in a "rules" mail that goos too everyone new in town and on the comunitys forum.
I used to play EVE Online and here is it's FAQ regarding rude content. I am just playing the wrong game.
ii. Game Rating
EVE has a "TEEN" rating. Parents may find it inappropriate for use by children under the age of thirteen (13).
CCP has established Rules of Conduct (discussed below) for players accessing the System and may, but is not obligated to, monitor and take action regarding inappropriate conduct. Nonetheless, it is possible that at any time there may be language or other material accessible on or through the System that you may consider inappropriate for children or that may be offensive to some users of any age. You acknowledge that other players may transmit communications or content, or access to content, that you may consider inappropriate or objectionable. CCP does not, as a matter of policy, prescreen the communications or content transmitted by each player and is in no way responsible for the communications and content transmitted by players of the Game.
On my city of heroes box it states 16+ I am hanging my head right now.
Excuse my confusion over the "Evil" comment as meaning "RP" then.
No worries mate.
I stick by any game rules, however when I join a guild to play with I do expect there to be some policies in place that will deter ppl from over-using or needlessly using profanities (The odd once or twice is ok so long as it's not a constant barrage of crap) or from having to be sexually explicit when there is no need to be, if I want to be sexually explicit I log off the game and plead with the wife for some fun, 9 times out of 10 I have to log back on again.
Again you have to use your own judgement, with friends say what the heck you want to as they will know it's not personal, with strangers be on your guard, thats about it, it's all down to using your own judgement.
I'd also like to add that I have never really heard of anyone being banned for offensive language or sexually explicit language, and I've been playing MMO's since 1999.
Ofc thats not to say it hasn't happened, I'm sure it has but with my own network of friends I've never come across it.
I'm also no angel and have at times lost it, but usually the keyboard takes the brunt of it and the wife then slaps me for suddenly shouting off at the monitor, luckily none of that has rubbed off onto my kids, though my oldest boy who is 17 in a few months does sometimes get frustrated while PvPing in WoW, though I have to remind him it's just a game.
In ANY conversation, real life or virtual, you have to know your audiance. With a PUG, I watch my language and my actions. No telling if your playing with a kid and their parents are also watching them.
The rules of conduct is there to protect the company and those who don't want to see that. Although it's kinda silly that someone would complaine about the words you use if they have their filter on. Unless you were trying to bypass the filter.
your arguement is so persuasive, so filled with knowledge and insight. You back up your argument very articulately, with suggestions of improvements and raising examples to glorify your position....oh wait, you didn't
You used to get away with pretty much anything in that game under cryptic but since plaync moved in, things have changed. I got a warning too for language issues. F word, that's it. Hell they didn't even care about greifing or worse before.
-Would you like cheddar or swiss cheese?
-Yes.
-...
Well the game box has a age 16 rating on it, I believe it is in fact illegal for children to be able to buy and play it.
And no I was not trying to bypass the filter at all.
It seems so, I used to play in Europe and I have never had a problem with any game before. Looking at new games now in my spare time.
Not sure whether to go back to WoW wait for others or try EVE online once more.
Doctor Doom never dropped the F-Bomb.
Also, the topic of this thread is misleading. The topic should be,"I Can't Edit My Language QQ"
If you hit your thumb with a hammer while driving a nail? Yeah, there are some words for that.
If some dummy gets your team floored twice? Yeah, there are words for that, too. But the team is over at that point and you're taking your chances.
If your standard in-game chat looks like,"Hey, b!%&*$, let's f@&^ up some a$$%*&#$ motherf@^&#$!!". Then someone somewhere will take offense.
You're allowed an extra step to think about what you're communicating thru the act of typing it. Or, by pressing the teamspeak button. Take advantage of it.
You get a slap on the wrist and your reaction is to yell and scream like a 5 year old telling people to not play the game?
Maybe some self moderation and thinking before you speak in a public chat forum (a PUG is public) would be a better solution. My guild chat has looked mighty filthy before and yet not a single warning in any game ever because I have the brains to tone it back in public forums. And if I did get a warning I would take it as such, not run to the closest msg board screaming "they were mean to me, don't play this game!!!!"
PS you made me decide to activate my account again A game company with the moral fiber to enforce rules like this is just what the industry needs.
Good for you horrid.
Personally I need to play in a more adult setting that allows a freeflow of fun whether that involves swearing, chatting about things of a sexual nature or discussing the latest score's of someone's favourite sport.
If you want to play a game that does not allow this content then you might want to think about Club Penguin and Fusion Fall as well. Think there are a couple of other games like that around.
As I said above though in two years this will not matter, voice comms will not be able to be controlled within games. A 16 rating that allows talk of an adult nature will become the norm.
City of Heroes does not have much more than two years left in it. The ncsoft re-structure screams that. Plus the launch of the new star wars game and a couple of others will clean up.
"A game company with the moral fiber to enforce rules like this is just what the industry needs." This is why they have millions of subscribers and are not struggling to decide whether to turn off the lights if the architect system isn't successful?
Oh nay you may cry but with the launch of champions and in a smaller while dc universe, I don't think a niche game like this has the stability to survive even a small reduction in player subscribers.
