This game is good. It's actually better than most P2P games. If ur still paying to play a Fantasy MMO you owe it to yourself to at least try this game. Don't take my word for it, it's F2P and Free to download. It's gonna take a Loooong time to download but just be patient it is worth it. It takes a long time cause it's choc full of content. Not gonna beat a dead horse, try it ... it sells itself.

It didnt hold my attention for very long but yes you are correct that it is worth a try and it may appeal to some for sure, especially with it being F2P.
I enjoyed it for a couple of weeks but it got really old really fast.
Nothing i've not seen before, and to be honest i'm tired of fireballs, wizards and angry mushrooms to kill. Looking for a good sci fi game to play !
But yeah try it out, especially if you liked WoW.

My HARDCORE Story
Yeh neither could I but I might give it a shot again sometime who knows..
Yep, they've got a winner in the F2P department with this one. I don't really "like" this game but for a F2P title I don't "dislike" it enough to stop playing it for any reason in particular, and for the genre...that is remarkable. First one I didn't uninstall after 45 minutes since they closed the Mythos beta. For free...beats the hell out of any other one I've tried. Lots of room for improvement which I won't get into because no sense in complaining about a free game. I'll give it more time and grind away levels and hopefully they add some more fun stuff in the form of content directed towards pvp, like they've spoken about in the meantime.
They'll probably make a mint off this title for a cash shop game. The lag is getting to me though. Get alot people around,, a big city and it gets pretty bad. I shudder to think about large scale anything, pve or pvp in this game. The lag would get old. I play from the US and my ping is good, it's just when there's alot going on in terms of people...you'll see if you play, you'll understand heh.
I think Runes of Magic has alot of potential. And yes, it hasnt been around that long, so it has issues.
The most annoying issue for me is not being able to log in. They tell you this workaround, and it doesnt make it work any better, and they say its your router, and its not. I'm 100% sure its their servers, but they probably wouldn't admit it.
I can get in from time to time, but alot of the time when I login its 'Obtaining server list' forever. And ever. Sometimes it wont, and itll go to 'Connecting to game server'. Then itll stall there. Or it might actually finally go to the character select, then I click 'Enter world' or whatever, and it never does.
Its very strange, hopefully they fix it. If not, oh well, I guess. I'd definately give it a try, and did.
One of my favorite things about it is that its F2P, and it actually has correct grammar and spelling. And the text doesnt run off the side of where it's supposed to be, like other F2P games.
It is a good game. Especially for a free to play game.
But ... it is too similar to WoW. Those that hate WoW will hate it and those that play WoW have no reason to leave it for almost same game.
Its definitely worth a try since it doesn't cost anything except your time. And unless you really can't afford to have it take up 4 gb on your HD then you actually have a game where you can play whenever you want and not cost you a dime (not taking about things like costs of going online...) and can always come back whenever you get bored with anything else.
It is a very nice ftp and they are constantly adding more to it. I could see this game doing extremely well if they do bring out what they said they are working on.
it IS a good game for a f2p one.
HOWEVER!!!..
after playing wow for 3 months in global servers (no shitty private ones like 90% of the 'experts' herei n mmorpg.com) i pretty much saw attempts to clone wow in every corner. attempts that were left unfinished halfway through.
however the worst thing in the whole game is that game has absolutely no atmosphere. the game is really really dull..
so...
good points:
1. average graphics, which equals to very good graphics on free to play game.
2. attempts to go for a less grindy experience system which is VERY rare for f2p game.
3. dual class concept is quite interesting, however guildwars did it better.
4. lots of useful concept that came from wow (blacklisting etc)
bad points:
1. game is an empty shell.
2. nonfitting graphics effects in loads of places. (priests shield has really annoying graphics, knights holysomething visual effect are some two runes floating on the sides of your characters, what the heck? maybe its just an opinion, but it really looks nonfitting as in if they put that effect on ANY other skill in the game - you might say it looks the same there and those knights wouldnt say that they missed the effect too much)
3. information/tooltips/etc lets say we have this hearthstone, lets say we ignore the fact that its name and function is direct ripoff from wow (no surprise there), but at like level 10 we get these teleportation to zones skills. now how would i know that teleporting to one uses my hearthstone charge? i followed the quest log pretty well and did what they asked me to, but such thing was never mentioned. its like you teleport to the other end of the world and then you get like SURPRISE you can get out of there... well unless you plan to wait for one hour. at that very moment you start searching for quit button.
4. early mount system is pretty idiotic shit. you have to spend 300 coins to rent a horse for 15 minutes. well you use it for 7 minutes, DISMOUNT, then go afk for 7 and there you go - its gone. i presume that if you rent the more expensive one for 3000 coins ( 60 minutes) - same concept applies.
conclusion: game has loads of flaws, its dull etc, but even then its much better than 90% of free mmos which is a bit sad.
how could such horrible game be better than pretty much every free game? sigh
Runes of magic is amazing game.
It feels like playing WOW but with EQ2 elements added. Its also huge world almost totally non instanced.
And its friggin FREE
How they stay in buisness is beyond me. The game has better production value than MOST of P2P MMOs.
I thought I was going to hate this game since everything about it seems so generic. But I actually had some fun playing it and liked it and enjoyed it more than many trials to p2p games Ive tried. But after reaching level 15/12 I find no reason to log on anymore but since its free to play I can jump on anytime if I am bored.
If WoW = The Beatles
and WAR = Led Zeppelin
Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
Well sadly I begin to find myself in the same boat, the game got too old too fast. The game looks really good on the surface, but scratch the surface and there really isn't anything there. Sadly I wish I had realized that before I pissed away $160 on the item mall.
However I do have to agree with some of the others here, the game is definately worth a look, it is absolutely the most obvious and well done WoW clone I've seen to date.
I tell ya the MMO well is getting pretty dry, so sick of the same old same old I could scream.
LOL The fact that this guy compares this F2P to the almighty (In some circles) P2P WoW speaks volumes and he's talking about the present Wow. Who remembers what WoW was like when it launched ... I do. This game just launched and it is better than Wow when it launched and just as good as Wow right now (better since it's F2P imo). And the graphics imo are only outdone by AoC. Sure it's got problems ... It just launched, five years it took Wow to get to it's current form. Hell people are alrdy making Mods for RoM on Curse, it's that good. If ur tired of Fantasy MMO then yeah u may be bored but like someone else said this game can sit on ur drive and cost u nothing while u come back to it at ur leisure. DiD i mention that is more hardcore than Wow. You loose ur stuff in PvP, and U are not gonna solo any Bosses ... lol I know I tried (Horrible death a level 10 elite 2 shotted my level 12 Priest ... Anyway this game ain't easy.
BTW tired of Fantasy? ... me too a little but there is hope: Earthrise, Star Trek Online, Star Wars; The Old Republic, and Global Agenda all look promissing . Also when ever I'm bored with my MMORPG I do a couple sets of BF2142 or Crysis Wars and after I get my adrenaline rush I come back to my MMO. Just works for me.
Runes of Magic is a good game, but it is built on the WoW formula.
So my questions are...
1. If you are bored of WoW and have left it, why would you play something that plays identical to WoW, even if it is free?
2. If you are currently playing WoW and find it good value for money, why would you leave it to play a new MMO which is identical to WoW but free?
3. If you are neither of the above, then the odds are you don't like WoW, so why would you play RoM which plays identical to WoW?
Just some thoughts there, RoM is only going to capture those that have never tried WoW, which has to be a fairly small number now. It will by no means be a large game on today's free to play standards (where the top F2P games have millions of active users)
Is #2 a trick question?
Did you like WoW at some point in time?
Are you ok with mindless quests in order to up your skills so you can do more mindless quests?
Are you ok with a fairly immature crowd, not quite as bad as the WoW forums but not all that different?
Do you think that having a mount at 1 is soooo much l33ter than waiting until 40? (or 30 now?)
Welcome to Runes of Magic!
Seriously though it's fun if you enjoy/enjoyed WoW. There are some good improvements over the WoW formula but it really does copy/paste much of what made WoW good. This is a great thing if you enjoy/enjoyed WoW! Not so much if you're looking for a game with some substance.
I would still be playing it if I Vanguard didn't suck me in. It's definitely worth trying if you want to kick the WoW habit and replace it with a free alternative
It's worth giving it a try, but I lost interest after a couple of sessions. It's a rehash of WoW/EQ and I'm looking for something with innovative game mechanics and with a different flavour. I wish more game companies could grasp that MMO players don't want more of the SAME.
If you are going to play something LIKE WoW, why not play WoW. As far as I am concerned It would be much wiser just to play a more polished and solid game like WoW than RoM. While RoM does have some differences, its still essentially a clone of a few games packed into one. They will need money to support it some how and it always ends up coming from the gamers though limiting game experience to those who pay more. Its the curse of f2p titles (most of them, shadowbane is the exception)
Seriously sometimes I wonder about posters. Wow is 100 times better than this game yet you go and spend a years worth of Wow subscription and then wonder why you are bored.
All these F2P encourage spending in the item mall and you just can't spend a little. When are you going to wake up to the fact?
You can't pvp in Runes of Magic without spending massive amounts in the item mall. That is a good game? Sorry while I have a good laugh.
Been playing Perfect World, it is exactly the same. Only I have not spent one dime in the mall and yet still have fun. Yeah, I don't pvp, but I still have fun.
Any of the subscription games have far more content and things to do. If you play any of the f2p games, if you can't avoid the item mall, then don't play them, they will cost you far more that a subscription game will and you won't have a tenth of the content.
Good questions mate.
And i indeed have good answers for ya
1. Subscription games have element of so called "Compelled to play". Basically you pay for month subscription - and let say you play just one day. Do you feel your subscription was justified ?
I dont.
F2P game however. I can play one day. Than not play for a week. Than play for an hour.... You are not loosing anything
2. Because you are bored from same ol formula MMOs. And there is no P2P MMO that is worth your money.
But still you are addicted to virtual worlds. Its like Methadone is to Heroin
3. Because there is no other MMO that is any good. Believe me... i tried them all
Odd, I live in the US, play on the PVP server, and I don't really have any lag issues at all. Problem might be on your end, unlike WOW for some reason (less optimized code?) this game does not run on IPHONES and other older computers, a decent rig actually makes a difference.
The quest/reward structure screams WOW all the way, though from what I can tell the end game raiding is more old school camping of dungeons and killing mobs.
The PVP model is more like Lineage 2 IMO, and the added excitement of a high level red lunging out of nowhere makes it totally different than WOW IMO. (for those of us who enjoy this sort of thing)
To respond to another comment, yeah, I do think its nice to get a mount at level 1 instead of running stupidly around until level 40. (and struggling to save up the cash for it)
But make no mistake, this might be called a F2P game, but its not. You'll be too tempted to spend at least as much as you do on a monthly fee MMO so if you plan accordingly its not a bad thing.
And yes, some folks spend a retarded amount of cash on it. Last night my guild killed this one notorious Red player and got 3 dropped items that easily represented a cash value of 300-400 bucks. (to earn this type of gear legitimately would have taken 6 or 8 months which is how we know he paid for it) He'll no doubt be back soon with gear just as good.
Good news is that while great gear makes a difference, it won't save someone from the determined efforts of a coordinated attack. (hell yes we zerged him)
Is the game perfect? Far from it. Is it for everyone? Absolutely not, especially if you are tired of fantasy styled, quest based games.
But to just mess around a bit... hey it really is free to play, and with the right group, weirdly fun.

I'm well aware of the benefits of free to play MMOs over subscription MMOs, and I know most MMOs in general suck at the moment.
The point still standards though, RoM will largely appeal to those who like WoW but won't pay a monthly fee, that has to be a minority of people these days given how many have actually tried WoW.

I totally agree with you.
If you are ready to pay 15$ , than there is no reason in the to play ROM instead of WOW.
I see ROM as a MMO that is cheaper, it doesnt compel me to play ( since i am not paying) -
so a real cheap MMO fix for people sick of paying subscriptions , and playing really casually
One responder mentions the upcoming sci-fi mmos, as if they are a cure for the boredom growing around fantasy mmos. Even though I do admit Im looking forward to some of these games, its not really a cure, its more like a placebo.
We have had sci-fi, space, even apocolypse mmos before and its still just the same old hometown girl just wearing a different dress. Just because I have a lazer or machine gun instead of a sword doesnt mean its not the exact same game with just a different visual.
Game developers have lost the ability to think outside the box, creativity and original thought are all but dead in the industry. We are having a record release of new mmo's yet nothing in the past 3 years has challenged my system. I remember just a few years ago when you had to upgrade your computer almost monthly to be able to play the new mmo coming out there door. We are at a place where technology has finally outpaced innovation. I can remember not to long ago when hardware was scrambling to keep up with software design. Windows 7 takes us into the possibility of DX11, and yet we have almost nothing even using DX10.
Even setting aside the techno side of game development, lets think about the intellectual or challenging side of mmos. Just 10 years ago, if you were a gamer you were a geek, a computer nerd, one of those brilliant minded science or math based wiz kids, games tested and challenged that intellect and kept us smart, made us smarter. Now with the new direction of gaming( dumbing down games for a larger market ), we find gamers now come from every walk of life. Where is may be interesting as a socio experiment to study the interaction between these varied individuals from every walk of life, it is also very frustrating. Where it appeals to the pedophiles out there to have an 8 year old girl and her teenage welfare mommy as the primary healers in your guild, it also totally screws with the ability of games to grow and to challenge the true geek gamers of old.
Just try it and it is essentially a WOW clone without the talent specs. It is similar to WOW down to the UI look & feel, and the combat mechanics.
Sure, there are some differences, like you can dual class and skills are done slightly differently.
Having said that, while the production value is no where close to WOW, it is a pretty decent F2P wow clone. I will play a little more when i am taking breaks from WOW.
I'll chime in and say that i am VERY suprised at how fun this game is... easily one of the best F2Ps I've seen... It's good to see a different approach to the F2P genre.
