You're talking about his three part epic right? That's really not something that you just do for pleasure reading...And you don't really get the full effect of the books unless you speak Italian...there is deffinitely something lost in the art of the poems if you're reading them in English.
But since you asked about Dante, I'll assume that you're somewhat into reading epics...if that's the case then I would suggest that you read Milton's Paradise Lost...it was originally written in English so you don't lose anything in the translation and they're also much more entertaining than Dante's trilogy, in my opinion anyway.
Your argument is like a two legged dog with an eating disorder...weak and unbalanced.
The Divine Comedy is a great read. It's tough, but great. I suggest the version translated by John Ciardi. I'm reading it now, and I am doing it for pleasure reading. The visuals it places in your mind are astonishingly vivid, and, at times, it can lend to some amazing nightmares.
