Enough with the "nut shot" ads

Seriously MMORPG people you are making your site look adolescent and stupid by running that crap.  Seriously, I'd expect more from you.

deviliscious: (PS. I have been told that when I use scientific language, it does not make me sound more intelligent, it only makes me sound like a jackass. It makes me appear that I am not knowledgable enough in the subject I am discussing to be able to translate it for people outside the field to understand. Some advice you might consider as well)

They have no say in what a MMO Development Company puts in their ad's, its like the infomercials you see on tv and the commericals during a sporting events like the world series and the superbowl. the dev's of the game pay for a spot ad and the MMORPG.Com people say how much for what size.

"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? If we kill people to protect ourselves and this future, then what sort of future is it, and what will we have become? There is no future for those who have died. And what of those who did the killing? Is happiness to be found in a future that is grasped with blood stained hands? Is that the truth?"

Nonsense = bad. What the hell are you talking about?

what Im trying to bring across is while MMORPG.Com can accept or turn away certain ads for their site. they have no say how the ads are put together.

Yeah, I think I got a handle on advertising.. I was production director for a big communications company for years.  If you don't keep some control over the quality and tone of the advertising that you carry you risk making yourself look REALLY stupid.  Especially in the case of ads that are in really poor taste.

I take it you haven't heard how many GoDaddy commercials were rejected for the Super Bowl?  One year it took them something like 12 or 14 tries to come up with something the network would air.

  • akiira69akiira69 Member UncommonPosts: 615

Yeah so was the PETA Commercial. Only difference is that the whole world new about the PETA commercial not the GoDaddy.com. Which is why in my 2nd post i said they can turn away any they want, but when it comes down to the actual development of the ad then MMORPG.com has no say

    2. Install Adblock plus plug in for Firefox

    3. Use Firefox to browse mmorpg.com

    4. No more ads.

I don't understand whats so wrong about the ad.  I think they are only keeping it throughout the month of April and then they are taking it out of the game.

Make games you want to play.

Your logic blows. So if you sell ad time to company X and they want to run and ad with topless strippers you are stuck running it? Don't think so.

Um.. it's basically content aimed at males under the age of 13 or people with IQ < 85.

Guess I've spent mosy of my time here in the eve forum.  Perhaps the rest of the forums fill out this ad's target demographic.

How can you say the Nut Shot is for 13 year olds or people with a IQ<85, im sorry that you don't find it funny but Im niether of those things and I find the ad hillarious .  It is classic and will always be funny to me and most people out there. Why do you think you always see nut shots on Funniest Home Videos.     Because people think its funny.....

  • akiira69akiira69 Member UncommonPosts: 615

No Im saying If i wanted to make an ad about my strip club for a spot on MMORPG.com they can not tell me what i can and cannot put in that add. It violates the first amendment right of freedom of speech. The only call that MMORPG.com has is if they want to run my ad about my strip club on their website, which is their call to make not mine, . NBC proved that by banning the GoDaddy.Com commercial and the PETA commercial from being seen during the SuperBowl.

    Why do you say that?

I think it is only staying for this month and then they are removing the nut shot, but I'm not 100% sure.  They are advertising their new content like most games do.

I used to play combat arms when it first came out with a girl I liked and once we moved on I stopped playing.  Its an FPS game made for FPS players.  Nut shots aren't a brand new concept either.  I don't really believe it was aimed at borderline retarded people..plus the fact that this is at least the second topic on that specific ad must mean its doing its job.

Make games you want to play.

No, the way it works is that a pretty well respected website will be taken a lot less seriously by people that have been members for a long time.

Not everyone of course.  Just people that really don't need adolescent and scatological humor popping up in their field of vision.

Hey, if this is in line with peoples' expectations here then this isn't the community I thought it was.  Simple enough.

Ill admit that the ad is in bad taste but seeing that the age demegraphic for MMO's is no longer limited to adults. That is why you are seeing more and more games directed at kids. Hello Kitty World, ToonTown, and FusionFall are just some examples of games directed at children. other games such as the one allueded to in this thread are also trying to garner the attention of the children and they will do anything to attract their attention. The only failure in business is the failure to show profit.

"Possibly we humans can exist without actually having to fight. But many of us have chosen to fight. For what reason? To protect something? Protect what? Ourselves? The future? • I agree the ad is annoying and immensely immature.  That being said...target audience.  There's lots and lots of younger players who find the concept of nutshots to be entertaining.  Retarded to me, but fun for them.  And there's a heck of a lot more of them than us old geezers who forgot what it's like to have the mentality of a kid.

So do what I do.  Ignore it.

And if everyone did that, there would be no more MMORPG.com.

We make our money on ad revenue, money allows us to continue operation. It's really that simple. I mean, it's up to you, it's your choice, but in the end that's going to be harmful to the site's ability to operate.

Seiously, it's meant to be amusing. Doesn't tickle your particular fancy, that's fine, this kind of humor doesn't appeal to everyone. My advice. If you dislike the ad (which is an actual feature in Combat Arms, by the way), I would respectfully suggest that you not click on it.

The problem with that statement is that they know the demographic of the visitors here and you do not. You are making the assumption that since you do not like this humor then the majority do not, despite it being a staple joke of sitcoms and comedy movies for decades. As 'production director for a big communications company' - since you felt compelled to throw that out there - you would know that many of these ads are displayed based on several factors, including the data on the existing audience and the browsing patterns of the person visiting the site.

While I understand your point of view what I don't get is the hypocrisy of your statement. Your basically telling the OP to ignore the advertisement, but......

In an above statement you say that installing Ad Blocker + or an equivalent program will hurt this site....

Sir you can't have it both ways. There is a program that will help you avoid such advertisements. You say this will hurt the site. Fine. Then in a subsequant post you basically tell the person to avoid the advertisement and not to click on it.

You want to have it both ways and thats just not right. If someone is complaining about an Ad, you as a editor/site manager have the option NOT to put those kinds of Ads up that offend people. If your going to anyway, and then go out of your way to tell the person to avoid such ads, I really don't think its proper for you to then complain about a program that does just that.

Its like a cop I know. The sidewalk is covered with debris from a construction site. Instead of getting the construction people to clean up the sidewalk, the officer sits in a small nook and waits for people to walk into the street since they can't use the sidewalk. Then he gives them a warning or a ticket, and tells them that they should avoid that street.

And now the only other route to the area is a congested bottleneck of people, and the stores along the street with the construction are complaining about the loss of revenue, but no one seems to want to bother the construction company who are causing the problem in the first place.

Sir I respectfully state that you should not be complaining about a program or programs that will ultimately hurt your site, when instead of addressing the actual problem you tell people to just go around it.

People are doing JUST THAT with said program. So now the balls in your court, you either do something about the add or stop complaining about those people who take proactive measures to avoid it.

You shouldnot be telling people that doing something to avoid something they dislike will hurt you, when you refuse to do something about the thing they dislike.

Again this ad is YOUR issue Stradden, its really not fair to dump your baggage on us when you refuse to deal with the issue, other than to say: "Don't click on the site".
