I've played eq (played for 6 years, enjoyed for 4), eq2 (hated the aa/mentoring), wow (stale, hate the graphics), Lineage2 (I guess I'm not hardcore enough, only enjoyed for 4 months), CoH/V (don't like it), SWG (pre and post NGE - enjoyed pre), Matrix (seen 3 other ppl on and deleted) , Planetside (see Matrix), Lotro (Stale, linear, bad graphics), ddo (enjoyed for 2 months then it got dull repeating same quests over and over), Vanguard (enjoyed for 2 years, may go back but the total raid focus nowadays is kind of lame), AO (waiting on new engine), AoC (linear and imo very boring), WAR (see lotro since the graphics are the same), Rappelz (no community), Requiem:the Bloodymare (wowkids in foreign languages...oooh fun), and a half dozen other korean (or korean style) ftp grinders.
I'm looking for a sandbox mmo, preferably modern or sci-fi, I'm getting kind of sick of elves and orcs (but can deal if no other alternatives). The graphics in LoTRO and WoW irritate me due to being either too pastel or being too cartoony/rigid (wow/lotro).
I'm looking for mainly pve, grinding/questing/don't care how the xp comes. Crafting is all good and well, but I'd be looking to buy crafter goods as i have no patience to craft much myself (still burned out from being one of the first boat builders on Targonor pre-server merge on VG...guild demand was a little high :P )
For race/class range i prefer something beyond the korean style each race having 2 options that expand to 2 more options per original choice type garbage.
Anything like this either f2p or pay to play (with a trial) that can be recommended or am I stuck playing single player games until Secret World, Fallen Earth and such are released? Oh, and for hardcore vs casual play, I'm looking at spending about 30-40 hrs a week in game.

Well seeing as it wasn't on your list (but something tells me you already know about this game), I'd give EVE Online an honest attempt.
It has a 14 day trial but I reccommend you play it thoroughly for atleast 6-8 days then stop for a day and see what you really like about it. If the bug has kinda bitten you then give it a go, if not then move on I guess.
forgot, I tired EVE, was given a 2 month trial when ccp bought out White Wolf games.....played for 3 days and deleted, wasn't my style.
Ahaha somehow I don't believe the reason why you didn't play L2 for more than 4 months was because you weren't "hardcore" enough. Considering you played EQ for 6 years and VG for 2 years. Maybe Lineage2 didn't punish you quite enough for you to like it. Anyways on a serious note I agree with what you said on VG's crafting, it was awesome. I was one of the highest tailors on my server for a little bit, but it became a full time job grinding those WOs.
Your game resume is quite extensive so I don't know how easy it will be for you to find anything. Seeing as you are a glutton for pain, maybe FFXI is more suited for you. I know you want sandbox, and no elves etc. etc. But really seeing as eq, eq2 and VG were your main squeezes, FFXI is really the only one missing from the list of games that really love to hate people.

I think Alganon is what you look for

Taikodom has twitch based space flight gameplay. It's F2P, the graphics are pretty good, but I really don't know much about the pve, pvp, crafting, market, whatever because I just got out of the tutorial area (I think).
Afterworld seems like it would be more like a sandbox and from what I understand has FPS-esque controls when you get a weapon.
