Thinking of giving EVE a 2nd shot

So my first 14 day trial was interesting.  I experimented a bit in everything and enjoyed it quite a bit.  Unfortunately i was whisked away to 2 new MMO's that released and was drawn back to Lotro after a friend decided to give it a go.  Long story short i never subscribed.

Basically all i want to do in EvE is make money (i love business type stuff) whether it be running goods between places for profit (damn you PotBS for ruining this), mining the crap out of places (best mining system in anygame, i detest the random node system in most games) and the odd fight against AI.

I detest PvP quite a bit but i suppose i may make an alt if i ever felt like it.  I do enjoy killing AI's so long as i have a reason/cause (faction hatred, piracy (of my goods) or profit (hangout near a nice mine spot.  I would also like to know if it is possible to play this game in a casual way?

With all this in mind, should i give it another shot? and would a noob be able to do all the things that i wish to do?

any advice is also appreciated.

MMO wish list:

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

High security means that unless you do something that gives some one the legal right to shoot you, you are safe(ish). The main exception to this is when you have something VERY expensive (nothing a noob has access to) as someone may suicide kill you and have a friend loot your stuff.

If you are in an npc corp, you also can not be war decced.

So yes, you can trade/mine/npc in high sec space and not really have a shooting fight with another player.

What you need to realize though is that mining and trading are both pvp activities as well. With mining, there is a limited amount on asteroids in high sec and a lot of demand for them. every unit of ore you mine is taking away that opportunity from another player. On the market, you are directly competing with other players for that sale.

Well one of the cool things about EVE is you can do anything you want. If you just look at it from the POV of "I want to make money" then you’re going to be playing this game a very long time. The possibilities are almost endless. In my experience though, if you really want to make big bucks you are going to have to deal with real players trying to stop you, and I'm not just talking about them undercutting you in the market.

if your serious you will probably end up in charge of something (POS) and have ventures that cover several solar systems and multiple activities. You will also have to defend these endeavors and sometimes you will not win (PVP again). To be truely successful you will want to ally with others and work to help all be profitable and enjoy the game. This will bring you in to others PVP. For this type of play style I would think you are talking about a defend and evade type of PVP.

I would suggest starting or joining an industrial corp, and I would think about a covert-ops ship and exploration.  I think this is a good way to start making isk and see many aspects of the game at once.

What about spending a month or two learning the ropes then moving off into low sec space once i am comfortable with my skills and (hopefully) rich enough to cover my losses and pay for a decent ship?

Thanks for the replies they have been very useful.  Checking out Covert ops ships right now.

You could even look for a .5 system you like and that has accesses to several low-sec systems, so you always have a safe place to return too. Frigs and cruisers are great for low-sec and fairly easy to replace. I would be very careful with an indy or any ship like that. A quick run before downtime is never out of the question tho.

In terms of PVP. A lot of the time, PVP forces itself on to you. The best module to use to avoid PVP would be your brain. Ie. Hauling tons of stuff? You might get suicide ganked, get some protection etc. Mining into a jetcan, be prepared for can flippers.

In short, you agree to 'PVP' everytime you click the undock button and the only 100% safe place in EVE is docked in a station. However, that being said, although unavoidable, the risk of losing your ship can be minimised by taking appropriate measures, such as staying in hisec, learning about combat and aggro mechanics so you don't get baited. Learning to use your directional scanners. Using Local as intel. Getting into a good corp that can protect/handle itself during wardecs etc.

(PVP in this sense being ship to ship combat.)
