Maybe people who don't have or don't want to buy a PS3.
Its being released for PC too, on worldwide servers with support of 4 languages simultaneously just like FFXI is currently! {Japanese, English, German and French}
No I wont go back. In my eyes I beat the game, spent years playing, thousands of hours, and my friends are gone and moved on. We will all meet again in FF14 though. It will be a glorious day.

Best case senario is they will lower the price for FFXI (possibly to a $1 for the content id?) or make it F2P with paid episodic updates (ala Guild Wars). I had to log on last night just to stop people from killing themselves b/c a whole lot of people just came to the realization that everything they did in FFXI was for nothing. Not entirly true, but for a game that it has been their life for 3, 4, 5 years this news came as a gut check.

I imagine they will have something carry over or have an affordable payment plan. Maybe they will make it where if you have an existing character it will allow job unlocks at the start or some benefit. I could see people getting upset, but at the same time you have a new world to explore.
The best part about FFXI for me was logging in on day 1 of the US release, getting with a bunch of other people who had no clue what was going on and unlocking all of the mysteries in the game. We went to end game together, we didn't look up spoilers, and it took us forever but it was the best gaming experience i've ever had. Now we get a new world with new mysteries and new adventures, and it looks like this time no other players to figure things out before we start. FFXI is an MMO where the journey is the best part of the game for many and now we can experience it again. In a market where there are thousands of MMO's that support a grind and rush to end game for more hidden grind this is the best thing that could happen for MMO's in my eyes.

It's funny. Everyone thinks XI is going to die now because of next MMO. I guess EQ is dead because of EQ2 right?
Blah, blah, blah, there is no reason to play XI now and all that garbage. I'll be playing both. I guess the multiple times they kept saying that the next MMO is meant to co-exist with XI meant nothing.
Whatever though, just keep on going with the "there is no reason to go back to XI now". You didn't beat anything. Saying you beat an MMO is like saying you learned all knowledge, there is always something new to learn.

The bad part is I am going to be playing 3. I'll be in FFXI, FFXIV (which I have now dubbed Final Fantasy 11 V) , and SWTOR. The EQ/EQ2 parallel was what I was using in talking to my LS yesterday. Same world, differnt universe, differnt (albeit interchangable) player sets. Then today I find out FF11V is in a different world but meh. I just wonder where this new world is in comparison to Ivalice and Vana'deil (which I am convinced are on the same planet)
EDIT^6: And the Agency still peaked my interest >.>
I was talking about the fact that EQ1 is still alive and kicking. The games can co-exist. It's people's hysteria that are proclaiming there is no point in playing XI anymore. That's just a bunch of hooey.

shhh ... i need like 450 more lvls to cap ... this is might chance ... less competition for job spots when no one comes back.
I'll keep playing XI probably. I only play it about 10 hours a week or less now so I still have a lot to do. I'm not worried either because if people leave, they'll just condense the servers.

Just to clarify, SE stated a while ago that this new MMO is not going to kill FFXI (somehow) back when the teaser was launched in 2006 for the game code named Rapture. They're probably going to do something like make FFXI F2P for those with POL accounts linked with FFXIV or lower the monthly subscription to attract new users.
And I also noticed the similarities between Ivalice and Vana'deil :O I was playing FFXII the other day after my computer crashed and I said to myself "Oh My God! It's FFXI OFFLINE!!!"

Check out the opening movie again ... actually ... screen shot:
Year 704 Old Valendian ... it is just so similar to Vana'deil that I'm kinda chalking it up to a localization thing.
Hmmm... I wonder what SE would say if we brought this to their attention.
More than likely they know and its all part of their plans. Not much has been revealed or shown yet, and the Square-Enix Press Conference is creeping up really soon!

for once I actually agree with you.
People think that this new FF will mean the end of FFXI, this is so wrong its not even funny. All this means is some of FFXI's players will leave yes, maybe even as much as half, the other half will stay, the servers will probably be merged to continue to allow players to party, and to find groups easily. Chances are we wont notice the difference when it happens... since there will be 5-10 servers with the 6k+ players we have now on each instead of all the servesr there are now.
All it means is less servers, less regular updates, and probably less new players.
The game will be fine for many years to come.
Ether way though, Im not playing this new mmo by SE, I spent way to much time addicted to FFXI and will be leaving it once Aion comes out. I am happy that there is a new mmorpg from SE comming out for those people who are sick of FFXI but don't say that the game is dying because if you look at Lineage 1 and EQ those games are still up and kicking.
Actually, I plan on playing FFXI more after the announcement. My reasons are odd though.
First, I feel that the only way to warm up for FFXIV is to play my heart out once again in FFXI until beta or a few months before release. Take a 1-2 month vacation during that time for the calm before the storm.
Second, I know that if I were to move to FFXIV in the future, I will be leaving a lot of my friends behind. There are a few things that I want to finish up before seriously starting a new MMORPG. However, it's still possible that I may not enjoy FFXIV that much and return to FFXI in the future.
The majority of my linkshell will be staying in FFXI, mostly because they've placed too much effort into FFXI already, and they see no reason to leave friends who they've spent years playing with.
