Gameguard.

So I see that the beta client is using Gameguard...

With the abundance of botting and hacking I've seen in the Chinese version, this doesn't sit well with me. Gameguard is completely worthless and everyone knows it. Why do developers continue to add that garbage?

That was my thought as well....

Too bad, every program you create against botting will be worked around sooner or later. I think we (the legit ppl) have to face that bots are 'normal' in games these days... :(

China client does not concern me, How is the situation in Korea !! That is what I would like to know.

There was a thread about it some time ago. I'll look it up and edit this one later on.

To put things short... Korea is a bot fest. NXSoft US (ArenaNet - GW GMs) said they'll fight bots as much as they can (lookingat L2 these days - LOL). All we can do is wait & see...

Didn't find the thread that was here, but the original article it referred to:

Not on WoW, Blizzard has done a good job killing literally ALL bots on WoW with the recent Glider legal action. WoW is pretty much bot free (I mean, maybe 1-5% of the player base bot). So it's obviously not impossible. The people who found away around the barrier got the legal banhammer.

That link is really old Dec or early Jan. I'm asking what it is like in korea today.

This was back before they banned over 80k accounts in a single sweep.

Thing is, we get the bots/cheats straightly from the Chinese people while Asian companies over here take a lot of time receiving the fixes, so, to us, gameguard is worthless, because it isn't up to date ever.

Told you guys the article was old ;)

Anyway... Korea has 3.5M subs now. According to the article, some servers are 90% botted, so 80K bans is nothing...

About Blizzard... Yeah, they've made a good statement there. Though I know stories of so-called bot-bans that're not botted (linux emulators to run WoW and that kind of stuff)

lets just hope NCUS will keep the servers clean. They're at a new start with a new staff. I keep my hopes up!

That article is extremely biased and only talks about certain server that opened a bit before the article was made.Korea handled the servers in a particular way, which made it impossible for farmers to join the older servers, so they flooded the newest.

Korea doesn't have 3,5M subscriptions, they've talked about 3,5M subscriptions in China and Korea together, China's population is way bigger though. Still, dunno who said anything about 3,5M officialy, all I saw was a IGE article talking about that, I think the population is closer to 2M than 3,5M tbh.

Those 80k accounts baned, back then meant that most of the bots were gone, I've been playing in Korean servers so I know what Im saying. But it wasn't only that they banned them, it means that they also found a way to identify them, you can't just go and ban 80k bots after banning 17k one week before if you don't have the tools to detect them, so, the biggest advantage of that movement was the fear, botters were afraid to bot and that was key in the Korean servers, nowadays bots have to hide and their influence is reduced to nothing thanks to the latest patches.

I think that we can get an idea about how bots and hacks will be handled in Aion US/EU by seeing how they are being handled in Lineage 2.

Now the question is: how are they being handled in Lineage 2? Does anyone know?

i was happy i got a key for closed beta event this weekend, after reading this im discouraged...

They need to take a hard stand on this, do everything in their power to stop botting and gold sellers, they can choose to ignore the bots and and collect the sub fee from them, and then end up with a game with very few players in it, and alot of bots, or they can go all out and say that they do not tolerate botting or gold selling at all, and figure out how to ban 95% of them all... and if they can accomplish that, then they will get long term followers and probably become ONE of games with highest sub count.

Botting issue aside... Gameguard is nasty software in general. IMO it is the wrong way for companies to head. I have serious doubts about ever playing a game that installs a rootkit on my computer.

Phew! Almost installed this.  Any, and I mean ANY game that installs a rootkit on my system has no place on my hard drive.

    Thanks for the heads up.

Gameguard causes more problems than it solves IMO.... They should spend the time and money and make the code more secure.   Plus in China they just ban that character and not the whole account from what I hear.  So that in itself dosen't help with the cheaters.
