Dude it's human nature. You project your fears onto others. Take money for example . Some fear not having enough so in most cases when they want to bring someone down they use what they relate with.
The only reason I ask is since seeing that cinematic trailer...and then reading all the post on the official TOR...talking smack about how the sith are going to dominate etc....the maturity level seems to be lacking..it reminds me of WOW. I am already thinking the safe way to play it is play a jedi as opposed to the sith since most of the comments were coming from future sith players. Right now I am playing LOTRO and the community seems much more mature compared to WOW, which is a huge plus. Everyone is talking about endgame with this game..well for me..community is a huge selling point.
So whats everyone thoughts on what the TOR community will be like?

And the /ignore function will work just that long, till it's so full of people and that the global chats turn into weird abacadabra chatter you cannot make anything out of anymore, because so much is been filtered away due to your extensive ignore list.
I can take in quite a lot and people have to go through great lenghts to end up on my ignore list.
But when my ignore list starts to grow to such an extend (never had that huge of ignore lists as in WoW)...and seeing your guild(s) fall apart, because people are getting fed up and annoyed of the server and quit the game.... then it becomes time to move on.
And like I said in my last posts. In SWG, EQ2 and LOTRO (and several other games like MxO, VG, CoX) I never ever had any problems at all.
If I had maybe a handful people in my ignorelist... then that was a lot. In LOTRO (I play on EU-RP Laurelin still today) I don't even have anyone on my ignore list.
For games where there is a cushion in design, you have freedom and leeway to buffer yourself from these unwelcome members of the community. Take WoW.
You can leave chat channels. That way unless he is next to you and spam /say /yell, you are almost immune, add the setting to drop /say and /yell, and nothing will show up on your chat box.
You can bring some friends and enter an instance, that way all the unwelcome members of the community are gone, from your world.
Even if you are alone, you can quest, craft, harvest (you might run into them competing for nodes), fish ... There are so much to do I wonder why I would worry about these people I do not want.
For some games, the freedom is less. In PVP games or zones, they can attack you, in ffapvp games they can grief you. In games with no content except ffa pvp (like DF) you have to live with them or unsub. Now quality of game community matters, that is why I will not play DF, not for my life. I despise the community of that game.

It was the same as in WoW and why I just gave up on that game. There is no point.

No, Bioware is clearly targeting their KOTR crowd (and along the way hoping to steal a good chunk of WoW kiddies) and that's what you gonna get.

I have played too many MMO's to see the difference between one MMO specifically targetting a sertain audience and one MMO targeting and attracting a more mature audience.
WoW, WAR and AoC for example attracted a lot of epeen kids, while SWG, EverQuest 2 and LOTRO for example didn't.
All I am saying is how I feel what is going to happen to this game. Seeing all the discussions over various forums and how people talk about it.
Joining a guild is always a good thing to improve your game experience. Not just in MMO's. In every online game.
But if your server is going to be overrun by Epeen L337 kiddies, then a guild isn't gonna help you make them dissapear.
I have witnessed this happening on 3 different servers in WoW.... 3 servers that were awesome in the first 3 - 6 months and went straight downhill afterwards.
These so called mature guilds (from wich I was part off) will start falling apart one by one...because people get fed up, not willing to be put up with the very immature atmosphere of the server... they either transfer away or quit the game.
While I never had these kind of problems in games like SWG, EQ2 and LOTRO.

That's the whole point of playing an MMO. Meeting people from all over the world.
If I want to isolate myself to just a handful friends around me... I can just go back to one of my old clans, fire up an FPS game with RPG mod and play with them on a private server.
Every game has mature and immature players. TBH I suspect both sides of the war will have their fair share of each. I wouldn't put too much over-analysis into it.
There will be mature players on both sides and there will be immature players on both sides. So... in short... play the side you wish to play. It really won't matter because both will have both mature and immature members. Deal with it as in any other MMO... block/squelch/mute the ones you can't stand and enjoy your time with the rest.

It is also about perception, if you are losing interest in a game on a genereal level, yes the community will suddenly seem extremely infantile and annoying. It is all about what you let get to you really.

a) there will probably be a lot of servers
b) the game will probably cost money
c)people (notice i'm not saying kids, even though it could apply) with an intrest in Star Wars usually do it imaginatively. And i don't see much imagination nor innovation with the base of the "WoW Community"
d) i can always go and run away to a Euro server, they seem to be nicer sometimes :P
e) aspect of story and roleplay. This isn't WoW, and I have a feeling WoW type players will be ZomGOgohganrwekganTHIS SUCKS after one day and thus only people who are cool will play it. And if there's some drama, that's okay, it makes me more attatched to the community if you ask me.

Horde are not nuch different with college freshmen but lesser of two evils i guess. I do not usually turn off chat, I have thick skin, I can manually switch off my attention to unwelcome stuffs.
All I am saying is, there are games in which the mechanism allows more effective filtering, so that we can easily focus on games. /ignore is an example. No matter how much the guy walks to stalk and spam me, /ignore and click on port stone and I am forever free from him. That is what a system provides to me as a tool.
Some games makes harassment and griefing much easier, while making it much harder to avoid them. FFA PVP is an example.
That is what I am saying, not that I preach going solo mode on MMOs.

WoW has the best community IMO because theres plenty of people to play with and making great videos and stuff like that. Also you need abit of humour and immaturity because it can be really fun just to be silly and have a laugh in a game. I hate EVE's community myself because everyone in chat was so hateful and the problem is you only really see people in chat because it's not like you meet with avatars and stuff.

But when my ignore list starts to grow to such an extend (never had that huge of ignore lists as in WoW)...and seeing your guild(s) fall apart, because people are getting fed up and annoyed of the server and quit the game.... then it becomes time to move on.
And like I said in my last posts. In SWG, EQ2 and LOTRO (and several other games like MxO, VG, CoX) I never ever had any problems at all.
If I had maybe a handful people in my ignorelist... then that was a lot. In LOTRO (I play on EU-RP Laurelin still today) I don't even have anyone on my ignore list.

The smaller the game, the more intimate the community. But yes, different games attract different people. I do have to disagree greatly with you on SWG, my experience with the SWG community was horrible, I guess this was server specific as well.
It is also about perception, if you are losing interest in a game on a genereal leve, yes the community will suddenly seem extremely infantile and annoying. It is all about what you let get to you really.

i'm not worried at all
a) there will probably be a lot of servers
b) the game will probably cost money
c) people (notice i'm not saying kids, even though it could apply) with an intrest in Star Wars usually do it imaginatively. And i don't see much imagination nor innovation with the base of the "WoW Community"
d) i can always go and run away to a Euro server, they seem to be nicer sometimes :P
e) aspect of story and roleplay. This isn't WoW, and I have a feeling WoW type players will be ZomGOgohganrwekganTHIS SUCKS after one day and thus only people who are cool will play it. And if there's some drama, that's okay, it makes me more attatched to the community if you ask me.
Sorry to break it to you but you're wrong, I've played both sides on pve and pvp servers, it's the same everywhere, no faction has more maturity than the other.

The moment I have to dissable all chats and hide with a handful of friends inside a private instance... will be the day I stop playing MMO's.
The reason I play MMO's is to meet new people, join in into discussions in chats, have fun chatting away... join PuG's now and then.
That's the whole point of playing an MMO. Meeting people from all over the world.
If I want to isolate myself to just a handful friends around me... I can just go back to one of my old clans, fire up an FPS game with RPG mod and play with them on a private server.

I do not usually turn off chat, I have thick skin, I can manually switch off my attention to unwelcome stuffs.
All I am saying is, there are games in which the mechanism allows more effective filtering, so that we can easily focus on games. /ignore is an example. No matter how much the guy walks to stalk and spam me, /ignore and click on port stone and I am forever free from him. That is what a system provides to me as a tool.
Some games makes harassment and griefing much easier, while making it much harder to avoid them. FFA PVP is an example.

I forgot the name of the server I was on. My contact with them all the way from launch to introduction of grinds for jedi, is excellent. The trading community, the harvest community, the merchants, ... that game is one of a kind.
There is some "a**hole" behaviour during the heat of the pvp moments, notably the massacre inside hospitals, the traps use to bait people into pvp, notably when the unflagged people are aoeing. These are mild comparing with the bigger a**holes in many a ffa pvp game.

I was on Eclipse Server in SWG pre-NGE. Sertainly one of the best servers back then with an awesome community.

WoW has the best community IMO because theres plenty of people to play with and making great videos and stuff like that. Also you need abit of humour and immaturity because it can be really fun just to be silly and have a laugh in a game. When I played games like Lotro or EQ everyone was serious and boring and there was hardly anyone around...... it was boring.

I hate EVE's community myself because everyone in chat was so hateful and the problem is you only really see people in chat because it's not like you meet with avatars and stuff.

There will be immature people in any game you play, this is fact. The best you can hope for in most games is that they congregate on one server. In this game, hope that they will all be Jedi and we Sith can come in and wipe them out.
