Translation in games (FFXI?)

The only game I know that of that uses some form of translator is Final Fantasy XI in the form of pre=selected phrases and words you can look through and choose from.

Anyway, I was wondering, if they do this again with the new game or if any other company makes an mmo with multiple countries on the same servers, why don't they build in a type of translator that translates what you type, kind of like the search engine babelfish?

     Well that would be a great idea. I've never tought about it. Maybe many developers haven't tought about it either.

    But the main reason they creat different servers for different countries or continents, are for the connection issues. IMO

    It was never hard to play with the Japanese players because of any connection issues.  But it was just a hassle to use their translation system.

     

    People mainly used it to say things like "meat rod" and such.

    a built in translator like Babelfish?  Only if you can turn it off, thank you very much.  I don't know if you've noticed, but just cutting and pasting text from one language and then using something like Babelfish to "translate" it normally produces some very weird results.  Here's an example...  I've taken a source text in English, "translated" it on Babelfish to German, then back to English:

    Recognize the text?  It should be obvious since I just cut and paste and some parts of the post didn't translate over.  I do NOT want to play a game that allows players of different linguistic backgrounds to "communicate" through such a blunt, imprecise instrument like a Babelfish translator.  Languages are extremely complicated and complex.  Even well-translated phrases and words lose their meaning between one language and another.  The above example is great proof of this, as English and German are not that different (well, relative to how different English is from say... French).

    Despite the "meat rod" observation, I always found FFXI's auto-translator fairly robust and pretty awesome considering how difficult it is to communicate across language barriers using only text (and a small number of emotes).  With a bit of humility, some basic romaji, and a willingness to use some basic English on the other side, I frequently interacted and enjoyed playing with JPN players and think if other companies can replicate what SE did with the auto-translator, they will do a lot to foster cross-cultural communication/interaction on their servers.

    Granted, many people had problems with JPN players (or vice versa), but I remember a lot of cool cooperation and interaction, improved no doubt by the auto-translator (especially when you knew how to use it correctly).   I guess it's YMMV for people, but "no, please!" to the babelfish-based translation.  That's like putting out a candle with a firehouse...

    Haha wow, I never realized how off that translator was.  No wonder I failed French back in highschool :/

     

    I wonder if it is as bad with short phrases like "Get behind me" or something.  But yeah, it would definitley be something that could be turned on and off, but their pre set phrases were great when it came to simple things, such as "group?" haha.

    FFXI is rather unique in its need for such a thing, as most MMORPGs segregate their servers by country. MMORPGs like FFXI, where every nationality plays on every server, are quite rare.

    FUN FACT:

    The FFXI translation system is inspired by the Phantasy Star Online one!  Did you know that PSO actually has a primative form of the one used in FFXI?  It is basiclly the same exact thing except it was hard to use... and you couldn't make half the jokes or fun phrases :P
