The "selfish acts" of pirates can be debated forever.. it really doesn't matter. The entire world does it, it's like second-nature to anyone that owns a computer, the new generations growing up use it freely and easily. They are not "too selfish" or "too stupid", it's just second nature to them.
All this demonstrates is that selfishness and/ or stupidity have become second nature to many people.
The line between right and wrong is not affected by the argument "everyone is doing it."
If the new human standard is to behave with selfishness without regard to what is right and wrong, we can all expect to be "managed" with draconian laws and policies.
FREEDOM requires personal responsibility. When you give up this responsibility you open the door for someone else to come in and be responsible for you.
I'd really like to see a plot of I.Q. vs. year of birth for the general population. Based on a lot of what I see I suspect that line would have a pronounced downward trend.
What does any of this have to do with piracy? Yeah, the United States isn't exactly filled with free-thinking literates these days, but I don't see how "stupidity" applies to torrenting.. I could make the same case for anyone that drinks more than modestly and I would be justly ridiculed. Anything could be substituted for piracy to make this argument..
The general masses are just plain dumb in America. Just before 2001 and since then (obviously) we have seen our rule of law and domestic/foreign policy change drastically in the wrong direction. I don't even recognize this country anymore, and my short span of life reaches merely 24 years. It's sad, to say the least.
I suppose it's easier to condition the population and lead them in a direction of choice if the people weren't inclined to be more aware of certain issues.
Edit, again:
Yes I would assume the IQ for the younger generations has significantly decreased and will continue to do so considering the continuing rise in costs for tuition. It's being pushed further away from the average citizen as the economy slumps and even makes it less rewarding as a graduate today can hardly find work for the degree they spent tens-of-thousands on, which they cannot pay. As it accumulates more debt and continues to negate the student's credit score.
Going to college today is no longer a gamble, but a guaranteed risk. With that notion, not as many kids today are seeing college as something very useful.

.. but that's neither here nor there with this discussion.

What does it have to do with piracy?
People that rip off songs, games, and movies are too stupid to connect the dots and realize that this will eventually lead to awful and invasive DRM for everyone.
Stupid.
Selfish.
Simple.
deviliscious: (PS. I have been told that when I use scientific language, it does not make me sound more intelligent, it only makes me sound like a jackass. It makes me appear that I am not knowledgable enough in the subject I am discussing to be able to translate it for people outside the field to understand. Some advice you might consider as well)

There will be awful and invasive DRM for everyone and even more draconian crap regardless of how many people actually 'pirate'. They are not causing this considering the companies, government and bureaus want it no matter what the outcome.

With that.. I'm burnt and I'm going to read and sleep.

Pirates give "companies, government, and bureaus" a legitimate reason to implement DRM.
Are you being obtuse or do you really not see the connection here?

I'm not being obtuse or naive. The government and companies do not give a crap about the financial repercussions of piracy. They want the control no matter what. If it was about the economy and "principle" of law, then I would gladly like to show you a hundred and one ways and more on how the government doesn't give a shit about money or the loss of it. Though I don't need to show you this, you can simply review the past 10 years of cronyism and deceit and see for yourself.
If it was about the money or the law, well.. I would think this ideology would branch out beyond crushing piracy... but it does not. You're just along for the ride.
I never said the govt. gave a damn about piracy. I said they were using it as justification to invade our privacy.
The fact that piracy is dishonest and sleazy is an entirely different issue.

Oh me oh my. I'm having flashbacks to all those mix-tapes I made back in the 80's. I must have racked up thousands of felonies just in Bon Jovi & Ozzy Ozborne copys I gave to neighborhood pals. Cuff me I guess, its the only fair and reasonable thing to do.
People need to wake up and smell some reality, Gives the government a reason to invade our privacy? What planet are you people living on. They already invade your privacy and you willfully accept it. They raise taxes and implement laws that are not in your best interest and you accept it.
Carnivore reads peoples emails (double filter on the backbone of the interwebs)
Thousands of botnets from the gov't scoure the net to seek and find any information.
They have made ids where they can track you, license, finger printing, cameras and general survellience, they can use satellites to find and track you. They can revert almost any cellphone or landline call. They also monitor for keywords. They can track you from your cell phone (cause the GPS device is really off, I swear it!!!!!) they can trace your IP address, ISP's monitor what sites you visit, how long you visit them, what you look at, where you look at, what you clicked on, all your keywords you type.
That and the databases they have established to contains most of your financial records, all the lovely information you have to provide them when doing your taxes, they know where you live, what you do, how much you make, who your family is, who do you associate with. But yes, piracy gives them a REASON to monitor you........ ahahahahhahahahahahahaha
You haven't really been reading any of the posts above have you?

Fine. You've all convinced me. I now realize that DRM is more important than human life. So I won't download this song. BTW, if I have a photographic memory and I thumb through a novel at the bookstore, does that mean that I illegally copied the book to my brain?
Interesting proposition, but the author still won't get any money from the pleasure that you had reading his work.
"Don't read if you're not going to buy"?
Put yourself in the place of the creator - it's the most basic thing in all this "DRM and piracy" discussion. You create something, then you're entitled to receive something in exchange when people get some advantage from your work (unless you don't want).
Wait, wait, full stop....
So if I check out a book from the library it's immoral?
How do you feel about used book stores? Or used record stores for that matter?
This is how out of hand DRM and "intellectual property" debates have gotten. This issue is the battleground for whether we stay a free society or quickly devolve into a rental society where only corporations truly own anything.
First, you called in the aspect of a photographic memory - I supposed you would've related that to reading the whole book - that would be a problem.
Second, this discussion doesn't have to go into philosophy - immoral is not the word here, it's about legallity.
If used media stores were a problem, justice would've done something against them a long time ago.
And this thing about "free society" about the IP subject, sounds more like communism. So let's create for the sake of art - the artists are going to live off air??
