In love with EQ again. thanks merc's

i thought about trying the game again. sub'd one account bought newest expansion. and loged in making a new  druid to try to get familar with the game agian. got a healer merc and never died lvl 1 to 20 in a few hours no twinking gear.

had so much fun in past but no groups so i 3-6 boxed my self i have 8 accounts in total 5 with characters above lvl 20.

now i can solo easy. but heck i enjoyed the merc idea so much i resub'd two of my main accounts. now 3 going with 3 mercs i can easily 3 box with them. so i hope to be able to level from my 20's to hmmm not sure where everyone it at. was in the 65's when i left so i  hope to  65 at least then group with real players for the next 20 levels. mabe do a raid for first time in 7 years.

i never left eq because of graphics or story. or hard long quests.  i only left because of population. but i log in and see over 50 lvl 60+ characters sitting at guild hall getting ready for a raid i think. so there must be more out there too doing other things.

i still think they should do another server merger again. but i hear there's a new lvl 51 with 50 aa server coming out.  i think i'll jump on that ban wagon. i 've been working on getting all my 20 characters from level 1 to 30 2 yrs ago and now from 30 to 51 just to start the aa's.  i do have great gear. but if the population jumps to the new server. i think i'll go .

till then i'll play all my character and re-learn them. i like knowing what every class can do and how to use them best in a group. made a huge mistake with first character a cleric i leveled so fast to lvl 51 and never knew about these pacify type spells could have helped me so many times. back in 2003. so from 2004 to 2007 i played every class and learned the spells well. just sucks that i've been gone 2 yrs and really can't remmeber much of them. i'm sure it will come back to me though.

see you all ingame....

    It is precisely the problem.

    It went from group-cooperative gameplay to a raid-focused to a merc-for-pp game.

You are "in love with EQ again."  You might not know what love is, frankly.  It appears you fall-in and fall-out and then fall-back-in love a bit too easily.  Mercs could not possibly make you fall "in love with eq again."  I just do not believe it.

To me SOE = Sold Out Everytime.

No chance of me ever going back to any SOE game again, they are not able to focus at all and allow their games to be watered down far to easy to please folks.

funny thing is, i just DL the trial for EQ after being away for a few years....i gotta say, it has the WORST interface i have ever used.

i really do not remember the game being as bad as it was when i logged in a little while ago...not to mention char customisation is pretty much nil.

defidently will not be resubbing to this game.

yep the interface is pretty terrible. Char customisation I'm not sure you can really expect on a 10 year old game though.

And to Mercs, it's such a ripoff paying 19.99 just for that. I'd buy a whole new different game for that.

It sure is a lot of fun with the mercs.  They give you something to do when you don't got a group going, and they allow the group to keep playing when someone decides to leave without any warning...which happens all the time.  Nothing wrong with being able to enjoy the game without always having to deal with other people on nights you just want to be left alone.

And I do agree the free trial sucks, it's outdated unlike lots of the newer expansion zones.  Things look much better outside of that zone.  Also the game can use a character model upgrade, it's one of the most asked things from the current playerbase.  But to each his own, there are people like me, who have already gone through all the newer MMO's with shiny graphics and now looking for something a bit more.  EQ1 kinda gives you that "a bit more" part and keeps you playing for longer than a few months.

It's not gonna be the case for everybody, but then lots of people these days jump from one MMO to another every few months, I doubt anything satisfies these folks.

OK I am curious how the merc work.  It sounds pretty cool for when there is no group available.  Something like the NPCs that can be hired in guild wars?

Does this feature really cost an additional fee?

You can only use mercs if you bought the Seeds of Destruction expansion...I never had any problems soloing without dying until I reach level 50+ But mercs do come in handy. To me the whole idea using mercs was because the player base has gotten so low, its really hard to find groups now days. So mercs became the filler in groups.

Well theres 85 levels now and you got what? 3500 AA's to grind, it'll take ages to get that far starting from scratch. Even with a merc or if you have a few of em the grind can still be a pain. from 60-70 it takes forever from 75-85 it is even worse. And if you havent gotten at least 100 AA's by 65 you're going to be super slow at grinding your levels.

Edit: I cant really remember exactly, but mercs takes PP per hour or something like that. Or you talk to the NPC merc and put PP in advance and then the mercs stay with you as long as you still got cash. You can summon and dismiss them at any time.

Does it work kinda like Guild War's, yes.  That was one feature I really liked when I played GW, and was glad when EQ added it when I came back to check it out.  It's expansion content so of course you would have to buy the latest expansion to get them.  For someone like me who quit 5 years ago, paying for the latest expansion and getting all 15 expansions isn't a bad deal.  In fact I've played the game now for 4 months and enjoyed every minute of it, where as I paid $50 a box for newer MMO's released last year and have lasted only a couple of months in them (WAR for an example, 3 months).  So it's all your personal perspective and how much fun you have playing, the dollar amount means nothing.

Check this site out for detailed info on how Mercs work:

Almar made that site, he's one of the returning players.
