Returning player looking for some advice

ok so i never got past the trial stage of DnD online 2(ish) years ago when i first played it due to 1. crappy computer (performance was beyond bad, but i have a beastly machine now) and 2. timezone problems meant i hardly got any groups (i live in Aus).

Anyway i decided to subscribe to this game and have narrowed by class selection down to a few choices.

Dwarf Cleric, Drow Rogue (or other race, depends how long it takes to unlock the rogue) and X Wizard.

Wizard is there because i loved Pyroblast in WoW (never got tired of those fire spells, so much fun to cast) and i only really play mages for the spell animations and to burn things.  Rogue is on there because deep down i am an assassin at heart and will jump at the chance to play one in any game.  Cleric is there because i love healing to death (loved my priest in WoW and my cleric in Vanguard) and i love heavy healers.

also 1 key point.  No more overplayed classes, i got shafted as a hunter in WoW and i never want to go through all that again.

Basically i am asking what class would you suggest for me and why? (race and builds are welcome too)

MMO wish list:

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

Picking a few bits from your post:

Drow is only 400 favour to unlock, so doesn't take that long and playing another character to unlock it isn't wasted time, because it will give you a good insight in to how to build your next character.

Clerics are always in great demand, so you shouldn't find it a problem getting a group. However if you want to be a battle cleric, which can be pretty effective, some complain players expect pure healers. It also would appear it can be expensive class in raids if people are not chipping in.

Rogue is one of those classes that people seem to demand is in a group for trap heavy quests and ignore in others. Personally I think they are a nice all round class to play with evasion, lots of skill points and UMD.

I have no experience with the Wizard class, but they certainly appear to have some nice spells to choose from.

Warforged is my favourite race and Monk my favourite class.

Well, welcome back, I guess. The game will either be getting more popular or finally dying off, because of the upcoming change, but that's at least a couple of months away.

    1. Cleric: Great for getting groups as the only full-up healing class (bards heal less than paladins from WoW, and paladins can hardly heal at all), but there are a few things to consider; battle cleric is pretty much out of the question until you unlock 32-point builds (1750 favor), so your first  cleric should be exclusively a healer (max WIS, good CON, some CHA & STR, maybe a couple of points into STR & DEX, I recommend human for the extra feat and save the dwarf for your battle cleric. Clerics can be expensive because we tend to use scrolls and wands a lot (which are EXPENSIVE), but if your group won't tip you, don't use scrolls on them.

    2. Rogue: Looking for a challenge? Pure rogue is the toughest class to advance because the game focuses on DPS, and rogues have problems with things that cannot be critical hit, which is a lot after mid-game. Better to multiclass rogue/wizard, rogue/ranger, etc.

    3. Wizard: Another tough one; if you just want to set things on fire, sorcerer is much easier to play, and you get a lot more spell points in exchange for fewer spells. If you're dead set on wizard, I'd recommend warforged so you can repair yourself.

    4. Drow: Seriously over-rated race, with a couple of exceptions; they make great bards, and as sorcerers they can have the most spell points in the game. If they implement favored soul, expect to see quite a few drow in that class, as well. They do not make particularly good melee characters.

    5. Overplayed classes: OK, don't play a ranger. Seriously, that's about the only class that you see lots of. I would say that monks are overplayed, too; there aren't that many of them, they just aren't very useful.

None of this applies to "splashing" of course; that's where you only take 1 or 2 levels in a class for specific gains. Monk and rogue are the most popular splashes, for evasion and either trapsmithing or high AC.

what about going aa dwarf cleric first up (dwarf for the RP fluff, i like my dwarves ) get the favour points up for the drow and then go a rogue/wizard or rogue/sorcerer.

Would that work? also any builds that you know of that would support a more assassin style class (from Pen and Paper)

Dwarf is fine, I just give advice on optimization, right? It doesn't really matter; you'll wind up playing several characters, but cleric or sorc is usually best to get your initial favor because it's easier to get groups. And you should really plow ahead to 1750 to get the 32-point builds, if for no other reason than to see most of the quests. Some of them are kind of out of the way.

As for the assassin, look up the enhancements here: http://ddo.enterwiki.net/page/Home

Just to clarifly, Bards are fine at healing.  It will cost you some money, but you can be the main healer on most content, you will be a secondary healer on raids.
