So,
Would you put up a wind turbine in your front yard to partially offset the cost of electricity and possibly sell some back to the city or do you consider it a ugly apparatus?
What about wind farms? Bird killers or future power source?

I vote for wind farms. Wildlife usually adjust their habits around technology over time as long as they aren't actively hunted out by gun nuts, so I don't think there is a danger of extinction.
Any energy sources we can utilize domestically to make the United States less dependant on resources that come from terrorist sponsored countries (Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Iran, etc, etc), I'm all for. It won't change things overnight but we've used that argument far too much now. At some point, we have to implement them and improve them on the fly instead of waiting around for the perfect battery, perfect solar panel or perfect wind turbine. That's just dumb when ones now are capable of paying for themselves over time, such as solar roofs.
Yeah, maybe in five years time you don't see the savings but after 10 or so, they are all producting in the positive and have not burned one EXTRA drop of foreign oil. The sooner we put them in, the sooner we curb the damage and by the time we are ready to upgrade with advances we have a solid industry producing them.
Oil fanatics simply say that since the technology isn't ready NOW, it's a waste so why do it. That's just stupid thinking because long term, it will save resources (our own oil can be used in conjunction with this), jobs (most of the wind/solar equipment is built OVERSEAS by non-American companies in Germany and such), and money (no explanation necessary).
Wind and solar power are not great right now, but they are adequate enough to begin implementing. We should give companies who are making and researching these things HUGE tax breaks and not reward the fossil fuel companies that aren't but are dragging their feet and buying up the tech so they can sit on it and keep oil revenues flowing from their overseas partners.

I am all for wind/solar power. My only problem, as a farmer, is that I see these companies buying prime farm land to set up their solar panels or wind generators. So sure we may see more savings...but at the cost of farm production. Meaning land becomes more expencive, less food resources forcing agriculture prices up. Once those solar panels are put into the land...that land becomes useless for crops for generations after the panels are taken out. They kill the earth they are set upon. Not really saving the environment then are they?
Personally I think they should be settin up panels and wind generators up in the cities. On top of buildings. They would see more wind and sunlight up higher. Yet why don't they? Cause the city people don't wanna see all that crap on their nice buildings. So better to destroy the farmlands and make an eyesore for the farmers...cause there is less of them.
So go ahead and take up the farmland to save you energy costs...I am sure the flipside of that will be you are spending more and more money on foods.
Wind turbines are a waste of time and money.
Solution:
Drill more.
Wind is free energy.
Oil is not.
Your in the dark ages.
The Official God FAQ
This is an excellent point and one to be considered.
I do think with the vast sums of available, unclaimed land and desert space in the United States though, this is less of an issue than needs be. There is billions of acres of land sitting empty especially in places like Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico where solar makes plenty of sense. There are tons of places in Texas that has nothing but scrub where wind is plentiful, the same in the northern areas like Wyoming, North/South Dakota, Minnesota etc.
There is more than enough land to implement these measures without pissing off or running farmers out of business.

So what about allowing individuals to have a wind turbine in their front yard? My city is contemplating changing the zoning ordinances to allow for them and also to change the electric grid to allow for resale back.

wind energy will be obsolete once they cant build bigger wind turbines. Solar is the only domestic energy source i see that is realistic. It can be fit onto your roof, its efficient, and it isnt in the way.

Your link does not show any study. Just an article that says what you want it to say.
As with the initial stages of many new products the efficiency is not at its highest levels. There are still many things to learn and to apply.
Using your website, www.physorg.com/news150545203.html they are still working towards improving methods to increase power output.
If you think oil will sustain future generations, your in the dream world. We will probably never see oil run out, our kids might.

I really wish they would research the full impacts of these "green" decisions before jumping on them wholesale
www.sciencedaily.com/videos/2005/1012-wind_farms_impacting_weather.htm perhaps some money should be spent to make sure saving the environment isn't actually just changing where the problem is.. simple fact is when you take energy away from nature it has a negative impact... not knowing how bad it can get or if it can be mitigated will merely lead to more problems down the road.
Thanks.

From the article,
He believes the solution is simple -- create better rotors.
But more efficient rotors may significantly reduce this problem.

Aye he said they "may" that is the problem they don't know if it will or by how much they also don't seem to be looking into the cumulitive effects of large numbers of wind turbine farms around the globe... seems everyone is so focused on a "fix" that few if any are really researching the negative effects of the things we do to try and clean up our act.
Your right, there does not seem to be much done but it's not something that can be studied before hand. If we stop ourselves with every warning of possibilities we would never get anything done.
Increased CO2 emmsions from vehicles may cause glabal warming but we are still trucking, no?

How would those turbines hold up to hurricane and would the home owners associations allow them=) Speaking as a south Floridian here. 10 Years to see a return on investment? Doesn't do %$^#& if I don't live in the house after that time and can't take the monstosity with me=)
I doubt that hom owners associations would allow for them, one reason why I don't live in HOA area, and yes the return does take awhile. You can build your own for a significant reduction in cost ya know. Also, residential units are not that big. Heck, would be neat just to have one on the roof for asthetics is anything I think.

Me, me, me. Me, me, me. Neo-conservatives, bleh.
If we continued to use kind of prehistoric thinking, we'd all still be riding horses and buggies and wearing asschaps to work. Yuck. The thought of Rush Limbaugh in those is frightening, lol.
Just because something isn't the most feasible technology now, doesn't mean it won't be the smartest way to go in the future. When cars were first produced, hardly anyone bought them and they made no sense to the average person. Why?
They were impractical. They went way slower than horses. They didn't listen like horses. They cost more than horses. They required lots more maintainance than horses and broke down very often. Only the rich could afford them as "toys". There were no "gas stations", pumps or refineries. But yet, in a couple of decades after that, cars took over everything from social applications to battlefield applications. Good thing we didn't listen to Mr. Buggywhip back then or no one would want to develop airplanes, space flight, or underwater technologies.
The same can be for solar and wind. You could even use the sun as a giant magifying glass to focus high energy beams on enemy forces. Yeah, that sounds like science fiction to the small mind, but that's why militaries have been researching it since the sixties and probably earlier. If you look at the wealthy, a lot are incorporating solar and wind into their lives simply because they have the money to do so, so they can afford the latest tech, just like only the rich used cars in 1800's. If we can allow companies researching this tech to get a bigger tax break than say, OIL COMPANIES, then they can use those resources to develop tech faster.
See, just because you don't have vision is no need to try and punish the rest of societies around the globe and keep people from practically free energy and power while helping the environment for our kids as well.

I live in what is known as Tornado Alley along with a lot of other people. Putting a wind turbine in a populated area like Fort Worth would be, not /might/ be, but would be hazardous. So no, I don't want my neighbors to build a wind turbine in their back yard.
West Texas has the largest wind farm built in the U.S and is one of the least populous areas in the U.S. The problem with a remote area like that is the cost of building the electric lines to bring the electricity from that area to an area where it is needed.
Hazardous in which way? Killing birds, parts flying off or something else?

Didn't know that creating high skilled jobs (laying lines and related) where there was an opportunity to do so was a problem... public works or private jobs project would fit right in about now.
1. Create skilled jobs.
2. Create stronger economy.
3. Reduce dependance of foriegn oil and promote a more secure national defense.
Win/Win/Win.

ME, ME, ME?? Its my money bud=) Who are you to tell me how I should spend my money?
So I'm punishing others because I don't feel its necessary to spend a few grand or whatever on something thats not saving me anything? By that line of thinking, by not buying a Prius or a SMART car, I'm punishing everyone because I'm using more gasoline than I need to. By not riding my bike or walking to work, I'm puninshing society? Its all the same line of thinking. I should sacrifice for the good of mankind huh? Thanks for telling me how to live, hehe. By the way, what do you drive Popin? How far away from work do you live Popin? Do you have a compost heap in your backyard Popin? You got a turbine on your roof? Because if you don't, you're a hypocrite.
Believe me if money was no object I'd stick it up there. It would make me feel good that I'm using less energy. If the turbine had a 1 or 2 year return, thats worth something. Thats realistic. I'd stick it up on my roof in a second. Thats GOOD technology, as long as I couldn't get sued if the thing flew off through my neigbor's house during a huricane=) Let the corporation who makes them, build a turbine thats not too ostentatious, safe and affordable and I'll buy it. Otherwise its a waste of money right now. I'll test the thing for them though. They can pay me to use my roof=) I'm not saying its a bad idea. Its pretty cool. But the tech isn't good enough yet, When it is, I'll jump aboard. You don't see everyone with solar panels on their roofs down here. Is it because we're HORRIBLE PEOPLE who don't care about the future of mankind or just because its not a sound investment yet?
You know what a better car analogy would be? You go buy a car, but you can't drive it for 10 years. Is that a good investment? Or, you go buy a computer, but it doesn't turn on for 10 years. Would you buy it? Nothing is stopping turbine manufactures from making a better turbine. But who are YOU to tell me I should stick one on my roof? You want to buy it for me, i'll plop it on there tomorrow, since you're a great humanitarian and I'm just a self centered neo conservative, whatever the hell that means;)
A lot of people who live near those wind turbines dont like them ,they say the humming drives them crazy, also they are an eyesore to people. A better approach for the future is Hydrogen fuel cell and more efficient solar panels as they are less dangerous to wildlife and aircraft and take less room.Petroleum products will never completely dissapear due to their use in plastics and polymers. If you look at all the recent LED flashlight tech that has come out lately there is your proof as the Lumens per watt of electricity multiplied over a short period of time
They just need to devote more resources to it to develop it faster
