You can play LoTRO all the way to maximum level solo.
Some parts of the main storyline quests need a group. There are usually other people that want to do these quests or sometimes a high level toon will take a group through the low level quest. You do not have to do the main storyline quests to progress except for some parts which can be soloed.
The best endgame gear is only available from instances that require a group or raid.
I mostly played LoTRO solo and loved it. I skipped the endgame grind for gear and plan to play again when the level cap is raised.
LOTRO is a POOR solo game IMO.
Just because you can solo level to the cap, it dosen't mean a game is solo friendly. The big draw to LOTRO is the "Book Storyline" which is group only. If all you want to do is kill boars until the level cap then you may like the solo aspect of the game but IMO it stinks unless you're really into grouping.
The storyline is great. Excellent cut scenes, great areas to explore and it makes you feel like you're part of the world with something important to do. Sorry solo players. Group only.
Another problem is that the player base has moved on to new stuff and the game isn't really populated enough to keep a constant flow of players at low levels. This means that even if you want to group up for the storyline aspect, you may not find anyone to do it with until higher levels because while their are low level players ... mostly alts ... unless you time it right you can forget having anyone to group with.
BTW, I think the only reason why the greatest IP in all of fantasy isn't the top dog with millions of players is because of the forced grouping to do the storyline ... which is the main draw of the game. Everything else in LOTRO is fine and in some cases great but all it took was for Turbine to play "EQ1" with the defining element of their game and because of this, it has never reached its full potential. The real shame is that another excellent IP has bitten the dust, killed by a company who just dosen't get it.
As people have said it's pretty easy to get to the level cap solo, either through killing or questing.
There are some book quests that require groups that are interesting and fun, so you might want to find a pick up group for those.
One nice thing is there are a lot of group quests that you can do once you're a few levels above the quest, you won't get xp for it at that point but you can experience the content still.
And contrary to the post above me, there are good populations across all level ranges, and not just alts. I have always found it very easy to find a pick up group when I needed one for a quest. Judging by his post it is probably his personality that prevents him from getting groups and not the game.
Very nicely said. If you pick the right class like a warrden or RK IMO you can solo the whole game with ease. You can do quest when you are about 5-10 LvL's higher then the quest. They will turn grey on your quest tracker. As for the Book quest you really do need atleast 2-3 ppl to help you. Now then theres the end game raiding where all the fun is and where you need lots of ppl. But in book 8 there will be a 3 person raid. You could always sit back and craft if you want to as well.
Played Aoc/DDO/FFXI/WAR / LoTRo / CO / Aion
Playing Rift
Waiting for FFXIV to be the game it should. so sad =(
Though to counter that, I mostly soloed the game and thoroughly enjoyed myself. It's a bit more than just killing boars as there are actual stories that go with most of the quests.
There is also a bit of exploration. Most of my Moria time was me just taking a handful of quests and then going out to see what I can find. If I found a camp of orcs I would stay there a bit. When I didn't want to do that I moved on. One can make their own fun in an MMO as it should be.

I've played the game solo since closed beta and have enjoyed it. There are some group quests that can not be done without grouping. The game is made so it can be played either way.
Lol!!
Insulting me isn't the reason that the most sought after fantasy IP of all time isn't hitting the millions in subs. I played that game during beta and release and the books quests are group only ... unless you out-level the books but even then, some are still group only.
I would suggest that the OP just play a trial (if there still is one) but play it to level 25 and then judge for yourself. You may like it. Turbine did some great things here but if you really want to play the game and be a part of the storyline, bring a group.

Just a correction, a good many of the book quests can be soloed and apparently some of the more goup oriented ones have been changed to be easier (or so I've read). Havind said that, there are enough of them (most?) that are group oriented and I usually don't do those.

This certainly was one of the goals of LOTRO when they designed it. It is casual + solo friendly to a degree that it should be called MSO (Massive Singleplayer Onlinegame).
I will never fully understand why someone logs into an internet game to play the whole thing solo. Sure i like soloing too from time to time. I can solo grind without talking to anybody for houers no problem. But do i expect to see the whole massive multiplayer game content with this playstyle? Hell NO!
/Shrug there are alot of players like this nowadays it seems and LOTRO is the game that aimed for that niche. The answer to your question is: YES YOU CAN (with a small but)
but you may have to do as someone suggested and simply outlevel the groupquest that hinders you to see that piece of content. You can most certainly grind money to buy very good gear which will help. Once you hit 60 and find yourself unable to solo certain quests that are aimed for a level 55+ groups you will have to wait until level cap is raised to 80 but then you can do it solo - sure.
Go and enjoy it but go.
