Your Worldview

CactusmanXCactusmanX Member Posts: 2,218

You know me I like to know things about people to better understand them, I have done politics and religion, and now I am doing philosophy.

I also think it would be neat to put all three in perspective.

So think about a hypothetical nondiscript country, how do you think it should be ran in,

Personal Freedom, how much, what kind, what circumstances, whatever is relavent to you

Economic Freedom, again how much and what role does government play

Government type, and don't give me that just like my country stuff, be more specific

Other Stuff

Your religion, because this is relavent to how you view the world

Philosophers/philosophies you like

Philosophers/philosophies you strongly disagree with

I know a bit of information and thinking to do, but I think it is interesting to see where people are coming from and maybe see some patterns.

I guess I should volunteer first since it was my idea

For personal freedom I believe in "If it harms none then do what thou wilt," so unless you are directly resonsible for damaging someone's property or harming them then it is ok to do, thing like drugs and guns are ok too though they can contribute to unlawful actions being dangerous isn't grounds enough to to ban something. And being offended does not count as harm, suck it up. So pro free speech no matter what, abortion right up to full term, pro guns, pro drug legalization, anti dimscriminization including legal contracts like marriage, anti affirmative action (its racists), anti death penalty and draft and a strong seperation of church and state.

For Economic matters I oppose direct government ownership and control of any industry, municipal ownership is ok though, health and safety standards are ok too. I believe government involvement should be indirect and subtle aimed at bolstering rather than control or doing nothing. Programs should be rooted in reciprication rather than redistribution, basically the government will give you X money if you are unemployed if you do Y work for the community in return type of deal. I also believe in better utilizing prisoners to do work for the tax payers, as part of the reciprocation principle. Free trade is a must but publically funded foriegn aid should cease.

For government type I favor a Constitutional Democratic Confederation. Basically a loose association of states bound by a treaty which establishes a constitution, a common declaration of rights. A tribunal is formed out of representatives from each member state where issues of foriegn affairs and ammendments to the treaty are carried out with the agreement of all member states. As long as it does not supercede the treaty the member states are more independent than in the USA.

    The other stuff

    Atheist

    My favorite philosophers

Nietzche - Nihilism - "All credibility, all good conscience, all evidence of truth come only from the senses."

David Hume - "Beauty is no quality in things themselves. It exists merely in the mind which contemplates them."

    Most hated philosophers

    Ayn Rand - Objectivism

    Emanuel Kant

Personal Freedoms:  As much as possible.  You should be able to put what you want in your body, do what you like to yourself.  No exceptions.  Prostitution would be legal, all drugs would be legal, euthanasia would be allowed, Gun ownership, etc.  Everything would be fine as long as you don't harm anyone else.

Economic Freedoms:  I would want a capitalist system but with some referees.  Giving too much power to corporations leads to unfair treatment of the consumer.  There would be universal public health care in my country.

Government Type:  Democratic Republic but with heavy campaign limits.  You shouldn't have to be a millionaire and/or have the backing of millionaires to run for president.

My Religion:  Agnostic , there is no possible way for me to be sure god doesn't exist, so I can't say I am atheist.  I hate deity based religion with a passion and view it as a major major human flaw.

Hunter S. Thompson is someone I tend to agree with.  Not on everything, but a lot.

  • CactusmanXCactusmanX Member Posts: 2,218

You know I see many people calling themselves agnostics based on that they can't be sure that god doesn't exist, but to be honest I find agnostic a pretty useless title, cause being an atheist doesn't mean you know god doesn't exist just that you don't believe just how being a theist doesn't mean you claim to know a god exists, you just believe, so I think if you don't believe in a god you are an athiest, whether you claim to know or not.

I do wonder what it is that makes nontheists so socially permissive.  I really have never met a nontheist that wasn't socially permissive.

Well technically speaking I am an atheist. I don't believe in god or such forces that move the universe neither I have any use for it. Although I was born in a religious family of doctors and teachers, I understood relatively young that all things have a logical explanation if all the facts are gathered. Just because we have not found these facts doesn't mean that an unseen all powerful force is behind it. Simple as that. Humans have proved time and time again that they need no gods and demons to protect and plague them. They are able to perform their own miracles and sins everyday.

My world view starts from the word "human" as the basis. In greek "human" is translated as "anthropos" which means "the one that looks up". Simply put I am interested in everything that will exalt a human, or inspire others to follow suit. That's why I always admired people like Dr Svaitser for instance but also people that don't let their "morality" influencing them to do what has to be done to progress.

Philosophically speaking I am influenced by many sources (bookworm ftw) so I can't say I have a favourite, but if I had to choose for now I'd say the cynics philosophers will always have a special interest for me, along with some nihilistic theories. Though in the end what's important for me is to gain new perspectives in everything that surrounds me, because whether I like it or not, there is never one truth, there is only the truth we can perceive.

Personal freedom. "Any society that would give up a little liberty to gain a little security will deserve neither and lose both" - Benjamin Franklin. That says it all.

Economic freedom. I pretty much think the opposite here: a lot of government control. I believe in more restrictions to control the market. I'm against protectionism.

Government type. Well I'm plain horrible at this in all honesty. But I believe in a big government and something along the lines of EU, but then not the way it works only the idea of countries working together. The politicians should however be voted into both the government and the "EU-alliance" by the people, and be aware that it's their opinions they represent.

Religion. I'd say I believe in something similar to Taoism/Buddhism.

I believe that it doesn't matter what system of government you have so long as the people have a voice and are heard and obeyed and if not that then at least pacify them with equal rights and justice.

I believe that it doesn't matter what system of economy you have so long as wealth is distrubuted in such a way that people, according to their own ideas, have a fair share.

As much freedom as a person wants until their freedoms interfere with the freedoms of those stronger than them.

However, I believe that in this century, it is wise for the nations of the world to follow the systems of democracy and socialism.

I am non religious but I'm willing to allow others to believe in anything they want so long as the above is in place.

"The liberties and resulting economic prosperity that YOU take for granted were granted by those "dead guys"

I am as hardcora as it gets to be honest.

    Total freedom!

Only one law : if you purposefully harm anyone else, financially or physically, with the intent of profiting yourself you are guilty.

There is only one sentence, the final solution.

I mean honestly, every man and woman, and most childs know what this means.

Whatever you want to do to youself or others is fine, as long as there is consent!

Of course this is simplifying things a whole lot, but it sums things for me.

This goes from shoplifters to corporate jackasses, why do we not get rid of them allready?

Might sound like a commie or nazi but none the less, if you do not contribute to humanity as a race then bye bye, why should we support you?

I would like to add that it is in our benfetial nature to care for people that have NO other means to support them self, i still vote for unemployment aid, taking care of the sick and whatnot, if you can not work due to forces out of your control then it is our duty to see that you live a good life.

Other then that, freeloaders and so forth : They will soon fall victim to the first law, the only law, the one law and the one sentence.

    Personal Freedom:
Complete as long as it doesn't negatively affect the utility of others.
    Economic Freedom:
Ideologically, I'd prefer an enlightened, benign government to have full control, however, I do not trust human governments farther than I can throw them, so, practically, I would only like to see government involvement in issues relating to price caps/barriers to entry.
    Government Type
If everybody were sane and rational, then a true democracy. Practically, representative democracy of capable individuals who have an optimal social welfare in mind (unlike the USA's).
    Your religion
Strong atheist: I do not believe in the existence of a divine entity that created the universe. I don't even understand why it would have to be an entity at all and not merely a physical propensity. Sentience is not required to create sentient beings in a nutshell.
    Philosophers/philosophies
This will seem arrogant and it is, but not really any except for subsets of a lot things. I can not find any philosophy that I can agree with entirely. That is not to say that there isn't one, but I'm too lazy to look for it and it isn't important, since few people share my beliefs as it is.
    Philosophers/philosophies(I disagree with):
    Anything based on moral principles.

    Personal freedom.

I wish to live my life under the radar. To be unknown by rules and regulations by merit of my ninja skills alone. I wish to be able to get away from everyone else so that what they do can't affect me if I do not wish it to and so that I can do whatever I want to without it affecting them.

    Economic Freedom.

I wish to be free to make money without interference. I wish to be free to keep the money I make. I wish all other people the same.

    Government type.

Some sort of dictatorship would do me. Perhaps even a tyranny. I just want them to run a military and nothing much else. Fat chance of that of course.

    My religion

I'm nominally Church of England. I'll go with whatever religion my peers go with. I'm not into the spiritual side of it, just the social.

    My philosophy?

I like to be helpful. I like to be nice to people. I believe that what you reap is what you sow, so that the more people I am nice to, the more likely people are to be nice to me. There probably is a philospher who says that, but I'm damned if I've read him.

I don't agree with any philosophy that involves stealing from me or me doing things I didn't volunteer for.

Personal Freedom: As we are now basically along with the right to breed and own mudkipz

Economic/Government Freedom: However Britannia did it (jibun wooooooo!)

    Religious freedom: Tree-hugger ish/ancestor worship.

That would be an ideal world for me.

Personal Freedom:  This can be interpreted in two ways: "freedom from" and "freedom for."  I'm of the opinion that "freedom for" is the most proper and sound way to think about this issue.  Before we start to declare that we have a right to freedom, we have to ask ourselves why we should be free.  Because if we aren't going to use our freedom with wisdom and restraint, it seems to me that we don't deserve it.

Economic Freedom: I think people should be able to buy and sell what they want to.  Economics is necessary for life, and it is something that we as animals need.  Politics, however, is necessary for human beings to live like human beings.  Therefore, the public good comes before the private good, meaning that when differences between private right and public good come into conflict, the public good should be prefered.

Government Type: I think the Romans got it right.  The government should be divided so that each social class has a government arm all its own, and they have to compromise to get laws passed.  For example, I'd make it so everyone who makes $100,000 or more can only be eligable for the Senate, and can only vote for the Senate.  Those making under $100,000 can be eligable to run for the House and vote for the House.  Something like that.  When each person and each class has a voice and a stake in government, liberties and rights will take care of themselves.

Religion: I have a Catholic heart and a Lutheran mind.

Philosophers I like: Aristotle, Plato, Augustine, Cicero, Immanuel Kant, Fredrich Nietzsche, Max Weber, Reinhold Niebuhr, Leo Strauss, Hannah Arendt.

Philosophers I don't like:  Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, Herbert Spencer, G.W.F. Hegel, Jacques Derrida, Richard Dawkins, Ayn Rand, John Rawls, Robert Nozick.
