Digital Camera? Suggestions?

I'm undertaking a professional quality photo project, and I need to get a camera for that purpose. However, I'm clueless as to what the state of the technology is now and what the best brands are.

I want to spend under a thousand dollars. relatively high resolution, and removable media cards so I can keep snapping pics without fear of running out of space. Lenses that can be changed out are nice, but I'm not sure they are necessary/ cost effective. A combined video and still camera would be nice, but again, not necessary considering cost/benefit.

Any pro-photographers here know what I should be looking at?

    I'm not a pro photographer, but this one works real nice for me. Fairly easy to use and with the combo deal, becomes pretty complete. My want to buy additional lenses and most definitly a memory card.
