Hello All,
Well I decided to download the DAoC free trial last night Got all registered and all I can say is "wow"...I guess I'm missing something. I have never tried a game that had a harder UI...I mean what's up with the keyboard controls? I tried re-mapping but there were so many functions that I would of had to re-key almost every key and "try" to remember the layout. I don't know who decided they knew what the FPS key setup was .....because it was not the normal W,S,A,D that I've found to be common. And with all the UI screens up, you really don't have a very big view. Felt crowded to me. And I hated having to hit the (M) button to be able to use my mouse to look around, and then have to hit it again to actually move???
Perhaps there are adjustments to ALL of my issues, I'm not sure. But 1st impressions being what they are...it just felt like more trouble and time to have to CHANGE the game to such a degree to my liking.
And the graphics???? I know the game is 3 years old but man...all I can say is we've come a long way in 3 years lol.
I'm sure there is TON's about this game that I'm not aware of...and a lot of "content" and things to do. But this game is not for me.
I salute all who like it and have excelled in the game though and I'm glad it worked for you!
Best Regards,

Its a good game its just kind of empty right now.
the controls only take a minute to change. All in all i am enjoying it but I will be switching to WOW when it comes out because it will have more players.

Thank you for your offer "zcasper420" much appreciated I'll let you know if I decide to go that way.
I've been "trying" quite a few new (to me) mmog games since I discovered this site lol
I'm still currently playing Lineage 2 (lvl 26) as well as trying out Knight Online (lvl 10), PristonTale (lvl 10) just to experience something new and different.
Tried Matrix Online as well...wasn't for me.
I played WoW Stress Test and liked it (lvl 15 Rogue) and hopefully will see 19 of you in the EQ2 Beta tonight!
So as you see I stay pretty steady. Not to mention FFX and Star Ocean and NwN's....along with a 40+ hour work week, wife and kids and life in general LOL
Not sure how I do it all...but I do!
Very BEST of Luck to all of the 19 "other" winners!!!

One thing people freak out over when they download and try DAoC is the graphics. I have to admit the original graphics are old and out of date but please remember before making a judgement of the game that each expansion that comes out for DAoC upgrades the graphics.
So if you like the game play then you will get some nice surprises in the graphics department with each expansion you add.
The main reason I stick with this game is the fact that I don't have much time anymore to play online games. Man when I was single I could play 5 hours or more per day and still go out and have fun with friends and so forth. Now I am married and my wife and I have a baby so bye bye the free time. With DAoC I am not forced to team every single online second. I can solo when I am watching the kid and team if I have some free time for myself.
Some very good points "Abronz" TY
It wasn't so much the graphics that effected my 1st impression, rather the user interface and keyboard controls. Which I found very un-intuitive and somewhat of a pain to re-pattern to my personal liking. Perhaps I've been spoiled by games that I could just jump in and enjoy exploring the world? I REALLY like being able to use my mouse in a (mouse look) way and either click on where I want to go or use the "traditional" W,A,S,D key for primary movement. Does anyone use movement keys on the right side of a keyboard??? I'm left handed but even I have my mouse on the right side...just feels normal to me.
But as stated...I can re-map the keyboard and most likely fix many of my original issues. I'll see if I get LUCKY tonight...if so I imagine I'll be pretty busy
Thanks for the posts guys! I appreciate your thoughts!

I'm sorry, I totally missed the subject of the controls. I have to agree the controls can be somewhat frustrating to deal with in the beginning. I am the same as you, I am left handed and use the mouse in the right hand. For me to get around the issue of using the mouse look I just spin around if I need to checks things. It's not the same as using mouse look but it gets the job done.
If I have to run long distances I just activate mouse control (M Key) and use the mouse and auto run to get around.
If I have to look around without changing the direction I am facing I use the ~ + Ctrl key + mouse to look around....
Now that I think about it, the controls do pale compared to other games out there that use more standard formats.
I guess I am just use to it now.
Well I just registered 5 hours ago, played for about 5 hours. Reason I stopped was not because I was sick of the game, my arms were starting to ache.
I'd be constantly switching from MouseLook mode, then having to hold CTRL to target a monster, then press F6 to attack. Then when my hands were tired of holding the mouse, I'd walk around using the arrow keys on my keyboard. Anyways, it's a rather weird layout. Tomorow I'm gonna invest some time to remap the keyboard to my own desire because I can't see myself playing the game like this until EQ2 is out or else I'll be crippled.

I am not sure why so many pple have problems with movement in DAoC, use the arrow keys between the alphabet and number pads. I never use mouse look. If I hit "m" by accident I hit it again immediately so I dont have Mouse look on. Not sure why you would want it on, but the arrow keys work with it on if you so prefer.
I may have just gotten used to it, but I dont recall having much problems with the UI. It is cluttered and takes a lot of the screen away, but you can make it opaque (clear) or several variable degree setting inbetween full black and clear. You can also install custon UI's with ToA expansion and some of hose are real cool.
Over all I would say the UI is not a problem in DAoC as many players have played and loved and grown to hate the game with and around this UI. It certainly could, and I have seen, worse. I would say give the game another try and play with it. I am not defending or recommending this game, but for all its faults, the UI is not one.
Played DAoC since it was first released. All I have to say is, just be patient for a few more weeks, this isn't a game for anyone to be starting now. It has been dying for months. For instance, our guild, which was the largest on the entire server, moved to a different server just because of the amount of people that quit. There really are only 3 servers left to play on. Don't get me wrong, the game is great if your level 50 and can create toons for the BG's to PVP, but other than that there is NO content, and VERY FEW LOW LEVEL PEOPLE TO GROUP WITH. If you want content wait for EQ2, if you want PVP wait for WOW or Guild Wars, don't waste your time on this stale old game. Besides all that, Mythic has always had their own agenda, they could care less about their player base, and they are paying for it now.
Never say "OOPS!" always say "Ah, Interesting!"
