I'm going to have to cheat a little, but I just came across this (what I think is) very, very beautiful piano and strings version of 'Into the West' from Lord of the Rings. Thought some of you might like it.
From MMOs i liked so far the music of Craft of Gods.
"Traditionally, massively multiplier online games have been about three basic gameplay pillars combat, exploration and character progression. In Alganon, in addition to these we've added the fourth pillar to the equation: Copy & Paste."
My favorite is still the theme music from Kelethin in EQ 1. It sets a strange tone, where it is all at once melancholy, sweet, friendly, beckoning, homelike, mysterious and ominous. I have seldom heard music that strikes so many emotional chords.
EQ1, EQ2, SWG, SWTOR, GW, GW2 CoH, CoV, FFXI, WoW, CO, War,TSW and a slew of free trials and beta tests
Hrmmm . .. to be honest when I first log into a game, I usually turn off the music right away now adays because I have my own background music to listen to. Maybe I should do that less often . .. I mean there are so many cheesy 16-bit tunes that will always be close to my heart. I still play games like 'rings of power' for the sega genesis just to listen to the music.
(already been mentioned . ..)
All time favorite (didnt even want to go into the dungeon sometimes because the song would end . ..)
Diablo Town music ; )
Total War had a great soundtrack:
Old school:
D&D warriors of the eternal sun . .. every song was very good!
Faxanadu's 'foggy land' always put me in a cool mood:
Dune!!
Hehehe I will have to remember some other ones . .. I couldnt fnid the music in the 'abandoned house' in shadowrun for genesis. Similar ambient mood that I loved.
Geeze so many people obsessed with this EQ game that I had to listen to lots of the music:
Vanguard had cool music too.

There is some great music in this thread. Still my favorite is the music in Age of Conan's Conall's Valley (I think it is track 17). The music is simply amazing. I also really enjoyed the music in a lot of the Final Fantasy games as well.
Old school nostalgia - EQ1's Kelethin music. It's where I step foot into the MMO genre, where my wood elf druid was born. Always will be my favorite:
As for the rest, I'd say Vanguard cities have some of the best music around. They actually spent a lot of money & time making them, with voice and all.

If you are counting more than just MMOs, I'd add "End Run" from Mass Effect 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PobHe526wbM
also the Rome: Total War theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAlMaVYIzqw
From MMOs, I really liked a lot of the music in Vanguard
Cobalt Deep: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ExX8B5SZvdk
and most of the music from Kojan.
From LOTRO, the ambient music in Evendim is fantastic
Asheron's Call 2 had some great ambient music as well.

Opening log-in song to Everquest 2... Gets me EVERY time
Age of conan's field of the dead song ,
One of th best in my opinion too.
Whenever this music started in teldrassil I would max the volume, though it always pissed me off the fact that it lasted only a few seconds.

Rivervale. EQ1.
(rhetorical) How can you people pick music from WoW over the great works by Jeremy Soule for the Elder Scrolls series?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZA79eJ8wlhY&feature=related
Lineage 2 music, simply the best out of MMO's i've heard. The first chronicle themes are amazing.
The Matrix Online had some great music as well, and every district of the Megacity had its own music that fit the mood of the area.
Well there is many of them i like.
But this one will always be my number one.
Andrew "NECROS" Sega - Traveler

and nice remix from sequel

Blind Guardian - Sacred (in Sacred 2)
...and of course Jeremy Soule's Oblivion and Guild Wars tracks..

I can't think of a specific song, but I really enjoyed the music in Aion.
Age of Conan had some GREAT music, for sure.
Guild Wars music is very good.
Much of the music in Wrath of the Lich King was amazing too.
Dragonage had some decent tracks.
Of course, any Star Wars music is pretty great.
Hmmm Im going old school here. Megaman had some pretty sick tunes and also the first level of Contra had a sweet song.
EPIC THREAD!

Age of Conan has plenty of good tracks in it's playlist, has to be a top contender.
One tune does stick out for me that I never got tired of hearing in the background was the Zelda theme.
Megaman
Once again, Megaman.
This thread should have been closed once the OP put down Megaman.
BOOYAKA!
