EVE Impressions

Called my friend (ol' university buddie) and he's bought Eve already and will install it tomorrow to give me his first impressions. He's quite optimistic because he's always enjoyed the Elite series - especially Frontier, or rather the potential of Frontier (if you minused the bugs).

I must admit, I have a hankering to play a sci-fi game again but have to confess to a pull towards fantasy because it's in my blood (and it's the easy option). Saying that, only two games really impress me: Eve and Horizons. Hence, once my credit card arrives I'll no doubt play Eve. I'm not terribly fickle so I don't swap games like partners in the swinging 70's.

Now that a friend has pulled out from our Thailand expedition (v.disappointed), I can concentrate on Eve.

If I think about those gorgeous turquoise seas, white, sandy beaches, idallyc beach huts, kyaking, snorkeling, that white silk outfit I had my eye on, full moon parties, exploring the Mekhong River, I might burst into tears ..

Will update you all on what my friend thinks over the next few weeks - almost like a running diary.

Regards,

Riotgirl

I played EVE during the last 5 days of the open beta, liked it, bought the game, played some more, and then cancelled before the free month was over. It just got too boring after a very short time.

The graphics are beautiful. The galaxy is huge. But warping just 20 systems away (of 5000 existing systems) will take you an hour. And the most beautiful graphics get boring fast when you don't have anything to do for an hour but looking at them. In the end I often chose "safest route" on the map path finder, started the auto-pilot and went away doing something else until my ship arrived.

Trading was fun during beta. Then in the release they slowly faded out NPC's buying stuff. The NPCs would only buy a certain quantity after each server reset and quickly become saturated. Meaning that you had to sell everything just to players. And players obviously are not willing to pay much over your cost of production. Which totally destroyed my trading profits. This is NOT a massive multiplayer version of Elite.

Combat in EVE is not very exciting. You click on the enemy, start your weapon, and thats it. There is no dogfighting, no special maneuvers. You can use some equipment, like shield rechargers, but thats it. And the bigger ship always wins, there is no strategy or skill involved.

But the worst aspect of EVE is mining. This is SO incredibly boring. In fact, it works exactly like combat, but the asteroids don't shoot back. You click on the asteroid, start your mining laser, and then there is NOTHING you can do but wait until either your cargo hold is full or the asteroid empty.

The skill system is interesting. You buy a basic skill instruction book for credits, and then you can train that skill up to level 5 by spending REAL WORLD TIME. Learning a complicated skill to a high level can take DAYS. You even continue learning skills offline.

So after a while I noticed the trend: I went afk for space flight. I went afk for making money from mining. And I could learn skills afk or even offline. So WHY would I want to be actually at the keyboard and playing this game?

The only exciting thing in EVE is the possibility to lose your ship with all of the equipment and cargo when a player killer jumps you at a star gate. PvP is not consentual, everybody can attack anybody. Sure, those attack will give the PK a low security status, but that doesn't actually matter much. Great idea, player killers were what made UO so popular. NOT.

    Thank you.

My software never has bugs. It just develops random features.
Why doesn't DOS ever say "EXCELLENT command or filename!"

Customer: "How fast will my COM ports go?"
Tech Support: "How hard can you throw your computer?"

For me it's a whole new era iin MMORPG. I am stunned by almost everythin' that comes with the package :). I felt in love with graphics which with sound make a really addicting connection. I am fascinated by the possibilities for spending time in EVE universe. Although it still seems to be not fully operational [due to main plot restrictions] I can see progress and new additions every next patch release. Almost every day I am discovering new brilliant solutions - I am having many adventures with my corpmates and even mining [which for most is the biggest mistake of this game] can bring much fun if you choose less security solarsystem.

Yes, I must admit I am an EVEaddict - I love this EXPERIENCE despite the minor bugs and even lags from time to time - but EVEstaff - try to work harder&harder - we pay for it :)))) and EVErything will be just fine or even better!!

I enjoyed the broken BETA when I played it.  I wanted to get EVE,  but I don't have a creditcard,  only an ATM.  Do you know if EVE has "gamecards"?

I know the answer to that. Sadly, the answer is no. I wish it was yes very very badly.

Eve is great for sure. One problem is that it lacks content for players who reached everything. I sit in my battleship and could go kill players of course. Did that but it gets old since i am not the griefer kind of player.

    I need something to do. I explored,PvPed,traded....

Eve is a great game but if they'd have quests like Earth and Beyond had it woudl be perfect.

I have a few BS now and came to the conclusion a few months ago that unless CCP creates more game content for those who've mastered the higher levels, that I will have to use the Eve-Online CD-ROM as another beverage coaster.  As I'm writing this now, I have a nice cold beer supported by my Eve-Online CD-ROM under it ....and it's doing a hell of a good job catching the condensation.

My ******** works in Polaris (I know I know, this sounds like a stupid "My brother works for so and so), and let's just say this:

You will not be disappointed in terms of looking to see newer ships arrive.
