Thought it might be interesting to see what the gaming community would like to see developed in new MMO's. I am starting this thread with a few games from my own experience that would be fun ( personal opinion ) to see and play in an MMO.
!) DEADLANDS - This was a western/fantasy hybrid that had an outstanding basic concept. The background and layout of this two genre combination was downright great. The game mechanics were, however, clunky and slow, if interesting. Someone got so enthusiastic over the 'clever' manipulation of mathematics that when played, a single encounter could be (and was) too long. Players in a game want to play, not sit around and wait for someone else to play. This can be solved easily in an MMO and the options in the game are excellent for multiplayer action. This type of hybrid would easily support both PvP and PvE. The time period was in the 1870's I believe with the Civil War still going on.
2) SPACE 1889 - An original 'quasi-steampunk' game set in, of course, 1889 at the height of the British Empire. Most of the game seem to center around Mars, alive and well in this alternate universe. People could fly to Mars in fantasy/science spaceships and interact with Martians and Monsters etc...Actually a fun PnP tabletop game and with numerous and surprisinly good play elements. I still congratulate the original designers creativity and inventiveness. Why not a success? There are a number of reasons, subjective on my part but I would really like to see something like this developed for MMO.
NOTE: Both of the above games carried some element of 'tongue-in-cheek' and that adds to the games I believe. Just like an MMO called "WOW"!
3) SHADOWRUN - I find it difficult to understand why some game company hasn't already locked up Shadowrun RPG already. Every element of the game background just begs to be MMO. Never mind the PnP game mechanics, the MMO capabilities of computers can easily convert this into great play. What is Shadowrun? Gritty, Dark/Light, action paced, solo and team play, in a future world of corporations (Wall Street runs wild), fantasy (Magic and shamanism are real), pets, spells, guns, icons in the world wide web, armored tanks and copters, "teams" of illegal shadowrunner mercs, money, wealth, power....Whew! Don't know what isn't in this setup. Game designers paradise and programmers nightmare.
Not trying to cover every game that came out but these are a start and I have played and run all of them. I am a retired game designer for TSR and Pacesetter games and really would like to see what the forum members have to say.
