Can I play a super healer?

You create your own class.  From what various websites have said you can choose from their framework / pre built power sets or design your own framework starting with 2 Power sets to choose skills from (even with the pre built power sets you can choose to add more skills / powers from other sets as you level up or up the ones you already have).

There are several power sets that have different types of healing abilities so I'm assuming with careful thought ou can make a rather powerful healer based Hero and then when you open up the Support / Healing  Role modifier be even more awsome.

You should check out Massively's champions community they got an article on Character Creation from power sets to face sliders and costume creation.

The problem is that I guess everyone would consider to make a soloable character with limited healing, limited defending / controlling and lots of offensive skills, which results everyone is an all around characters, though they might choose different skills, but the concept to make an all around character is the same, so there might not be pure healers.

If only the NDA were lifted.... then you might get a straight answer.

I've had to clean up this thread due to multiple NDA violations. I'd like to leave it open, so please if you're responding and you're in the beta keep in mind the game is under NDA.  You are only allowed to say you are in beta, that's it. Beyond that, public info only!

It really depends on how you plan to play the game beacuse encounters including ones in the open world scale according to group size.  Groups of 3 or 5 people make the mobs go for more help.  Groups of 3 & 5 also scale instance encounters.  The devs also recently said that you get XP and Loot Bonus's for being in groups of 3 - 5 people (im sure there's larger group stuff they're just talkinga bout the smaller ones in the recent tentonhammer article) There are also GROUP dungeons that pretty much recommend 3 or more players to beat OR for you to be slightly higher level with more training if you want to solo it.   In the end there will be those who like to heal and they'll end up having to custom create a healer out of the higher level powers.

Personally I dont like playing a healer but for the person who does its entirely possible.  Pretty much anything you want to do is possible.

(info is all from the tentonhammer article that came out yesterday about Groups, Sidekicks, and Guilds).

I read some good info on this.  It looks like you can definitely be a healer.  Looking at different power sets it looks like there are many healer type abilities scattered throuth the power sets.  But the big thing is something called roles.  If I understand them right they are like stances.  And you have a role for each archtype, defensive, offensive, support there was the 4th one but I forgot.... Anyway these affect all your abilities and allow you to make your character better in each state.  Also you unlock builds as you level up and these look like they let you completely redo your powers etc.  So you can have a healer build and go into support mode and really max our support and healing abilities or you can switch to a tank build and go defensive and be a tank.  All this on the same character.

So there is definitely a focus on groups in the game.  You can take any role you like.

You can switch roles and builds.  There is some cooldown on making these switches so I'm pretty sure you can't do them on the fly.

The 4th role is "balanced", and I'm pretty sure roles don't let you completely repick your powers.

They roles are akin to being able to switch between CoH's archetypes - defensive = tank, balanced = scrapper, offensive = blaster, support = defender/controller. Switching to anything other than balanced will apply bonuses to some abilities and debuff others - eg. in defensive (tank) mode you'd get higher defense, but less damage and weaker heals.

I think you've misunderstood the powers thing - it lets you save different power tray configurations so you can switch roles and have powers more relevant to that role automatically shift to better spots. That's kind of like the multiple hotbars in CoH. If you ever played a defender you probably would have had separate hotbars for solo'ing and grouping so you could solo effectively with damage powers filling most of the main tray and join a group and instantly switch the tray to one that had healing/support type powers filling most of the main tray.

And from they've said there aren't "many healer type abilities scattered throughout the sets". I think they've confirmed that both sorcery and telepathy have healing abilities and sorcery has a resurrection power. And I think there's been a video showing info that gadgeteers can create healing pets of some kind.

I read this on one of the darn web sites but can't find it....

Anyway they said there are 4 roles you can get and like you say they have different buffs/debufs that affect your stats and powers globally.  You get balanced to start with.  The other ones are unlocked based on usage.  You take so many hits or something and you unlock the defensive role.  You do a certain number of hits and you unlock the offensive role.  You heal a certain amount and you get the support role.  For healing you can use heal powers or you can heal from somethng that comes off mobs you kill.  I'm not quite sure what that meant...

You also can get 4 builds.  You get these as you level up.  The first one you get is at level 8.  A new build lets you change the look of your character.  It also lets you change your powers.  Now I'm not sure if you can select new powers or just change the ones you have hotbared.  This wasn't clear.  But what was clear is that you can change your appearance and when you change powers and items that can also modify your appearance.  I didn't understand the significance of this...

There was also a statement that changing a build had a long cooldown.  They didn't say how long however.  I'm guessing they don't want you changing builds every 5 minutes.  There wasn't any statement I recall on a cooldown for switching roles.

But with 4 builds and 4 roles each that gives you like 16 different configurations.  I read somewhere that beta testers said people wouldn't be making a lot of alts.  I'm guessing this is why.

I've played it so I know how it works - but I think the NDA is still in effect so have limited myself to the information they've released in interviews....

I'm fairly certain you can't pick completely different powersets on a single character like you've described. There's an FAQ on the official Champions Online forums. That contains most of the useful tidbits from interviews and such.

I found the article I read on this.  It is at

    www.tentonhammer.com/co/guides/builds/basics

Builds look like you can't have different powers but you can basically create a character configuration and assign it to a build.  So a build has appearance changes, equipment changes, role changes, power layout changes.  So you might have a build the emphasises powers roles and equipment to emphasis dps and another one to emphasis defense.

Anyway read the article it still sounds pretty good.
