Was just curious to see which games people thought had the best and worst communities from the games they have personally played.

For me it would probably be like this.

BEST: Vanguard or EQ1..Why? Because People came to help each other and it wasnt always about just themselves. The open world dungeons I think lended to this and also the games were designed around group play in mind. Sure you could solo in them but the best content was designed for groups..

Worst: Would probably have to WOW.. and no Im not a WOW hater.. I actually enjoyed the game.. However I think it was the game to really breed the ME ME ME mentality.. Yes it was there in some people before WOW.. But WOW encouraged it.. IT was the first game that I played where PUGs were looked down upon. In every game up to WOW i grouped with random people all the time. Sure I ran with friends on a regular basis but didnt mind picking up groups either.

So what about everyone?

Best - WoW, I think I may have gotten lucky with my server, on the whole it was mature (to an extent lol), very friendly and very social. Don't think I'll ever seen anything like it again. It was called Icecrown if that's familiar to anyone.

Worst - Probably WAR, very boring community, very little chat, everyone just did their own thing with as little interaction as they could.

Best by far has to be FFXI. Everyone was so friendly and eager to help. Any time I would group up, we would all have random conversations and end up becoming friends.

Worst for me at least is Runescape. People here are much more immature and childish than WoW. I have yet to meet a friendly player on there.

Best:  City of Heroes. Probably because of the casual nature of the game, nobody takes things too seriously or gets bent out of shape when things don't go their way.

Worst: World fo Warcraft. I don't know what it is about that game, but it seems to attract the dregs of humanity. When I switched to EQ2 and CoH, I was surprised to find that the people were completely different, and grouping with strangers could be a pleasant experience.

The Best for me was EQ not were people willing to help each other but they also were willing to teach someone who was new to the game how to play.

The Worst for me was World of Warcraft.

BEST: City of Heroes/Villians gets my vote too. People were always willing to help others out and most folks communicated like adults.

WORST: Eve Online. Simply the worst community I've ever encountered, mainly because they don't limit their asshat behavior to the game world, they take it pretty much everywhere they go (like these forums).

  • AbrahmmAbrahmm Member Posts: 2,448

Best for me by far was Star Wars Galaxies. Great community because the community depended on each other and treated each other as so.

    Worst would probably be WoW.

Tried: LotR, CoH, AoC, WAR, Jumpgate Classic
    Played: SWG, Guild Wars, WoW
    Playing: Eve Online, Counter-strike
    Loved: Star Wars Galaxies
Waiting for: Earthrise, Guild Wars 2, anything sandbox.

Best: Ryzom, it's like someone took the most helpful mmo players and dropped them in one game world.

Worst: WoW, It's like someone took every immature asshat and put them in one game.

    Playing: EvE, Ryzom

BEST: FFXI, no doubt. FFXI was designed in a way that meant players had to actually know what they were doing and not be a$$holes to make progress.

WORST: WOW, no serious need to know what you're doing to progress, no need to rely on other players to progress = lots and lots of a$$holes.

    Worst: Everquest, Sullon Zek server.

Best: Everquest, Sullon Zek server (heh heh)

    Best - LOTRO.

Worst - AoC PvP servers (P2P, because if I had to talk about F2P communities I would not be able to point a worst one, they all usually suck). Don't turn global chat on if you want to play on these servers, it cycles between retarded subjects.

Best: The mining guild that I was a member of in UO. Was part of a large alliance, with tons of fun people. Second best would go to the first WoW guild I joined back when the game was new and no-one really cared much about epics.

Worst: Would have to be WoW again; my happy little casual raiding guild merged with a "progressive" raiding guild; i.e. one that raided 40 hours a week, demanded 100% attendance and had officers and raid leaders that were completely neurotic little bitches who would scream bloody murder on ventrilo for five minutes+ after a wipe.

Best:  Tie - CoX and LotRO.  Both communities were helpful and always willing to lend a hand.  I really enjoyed my time in both games due in large part to the community.

Worst: WoW.   If the immature banter, the "I pwn'd u", the Chuck Norris jokes in the chat channels where not enough.    You had groups were people were SCREAMING at each other in an instance....over a game.   AND don't get me started with those want/need rollers.  You should never feel stress when playing a game.  The stress was relieved once I hit that "Cancel my subscription" button.

Worst community I've ever experienced in the last 5 years hands down goes to Darkfall online, followed by World or Warcraft, the best online community I've ever experienced was Istaria, great community of people.

Yeah you're right, you should never feel stress when playing a game. Funny WoW nor any game I have ever played has done that. Sensitive maybe?

Best: Pre-CU SWG. It was more of a living breathing world than a game.

Worst: WoW. The official WoW forums are especially terrible.

The vast majority of WoW players fits into three categories:

    1. idiot (literally cannot function enough to do their part in a 5 man instance.)

    2. elitist prick (they are smart enough to actually be able to complete some of the content..../golfclap.... and they think everyone that isn't in a top raid guild is a carebear/bad/casual

    3. gold farmer/seller (self explanatory)

Hard to make a simple call because frankly every game I have ever played has had some jackasses in it. I guess the "best" has to be where the good folks outnumbered the bad by the biggest margin...

For me that's a tie between pre-NGE SWG and LotRO, especially the folks on SWGs test server.

Old, old EQ and EVE both actually had better "high" points for me, but they also had soo many jackasses and outright morons that it dragged them down overall.

Worst multiplayer online gaming community of any I have ever been in goes to Beyond Protocol, hands down with WoW being a close second just due to all the immaturity.

Best would be DAoC in the beginning when the game released and to be honest carried over throughout the length of time I spent in it.  Last time I went back to it the community was good all though I kind of felt that it was slipping.  Ryzom for the little time I spent playing it was pretty good to.  Found everybody to be helpful and nice and none of them had a knee jerk reaction to anything.  Very mellow and NORMAL.

Worst for me was, is and more then likely will be for a long time World of Warcraft.  I found their community no matter what server I went to be filled of people who are like hair triggers waiting to go off on someone for mistakes that don't matter in the slightest and are too eager to look better in every way then the people they're surrounded that asshattery is very prominent and abundant.  I had to turn off trade chat, and pretty much form my own guild of people I got along with and exclude just about every other tard so that I can enjoy my return but eventually I had to just leave because the effort required to make find the gems in the sea of asshats was just not worth it.

No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-

hehe wouldn't you be the sensitive one if  his post bothered you enough to try and insult him :)

    Anyways:

    Best DOAC (kay/Mid)

Worst: WOW  even though I hate to label a whole community...I will just say it is not a group of players I don't want to play with ever :)

Was not an insult. This is where that "sensitive" part comes into play. Welcome to the category.

If you let a game stress you out, you should quit games in general. Oh and the "I pwn'd u" part, this was around way before wow, welcome to the internet.

hehe...not sensitive at all, but thanks for caring enough to ask...   =)

I have no intention of quitting games.  I just see no reason for yelling in them.  And the "I pwn'd u" part...not sure what point you were trying to make.  I just stated I got tired of seeing it said by immature players in the WoW general chat.  Thanks for the welcome, although I've been here for a while.

Well my best experience is most likely from eve, might have been lucky but most ppl that i've come across have been very helpful and giving out pointers.

Worst is when wow became really big cause in the biginning i kinda liked the wow community was helpful and friendly but after a while it went down the drain tbh.
