Will they wipe characters before or after Open Beta?

in World of Warcraft
As the topic states, are they going to wipe the servers before or after the OB?  I havent followed all the info, so if someone could answer this for me, id appreciate it.  Don't wanna spend alot of time on a char during OB if they are just going to wipe him.

    they will probably wipe the characters after open beta to put everyone at the same starting point at release. i don't see blizzard letting you carry over open beta characters to release.

    Yeah, it's rare for OB chars to carry over into retail, but I wouldn't rule out the chance to try the game out for two weeks because of it. What better chance to decide if you like it or not? I'm gonna play every race and class and whichever one suits me best is the one I'll play in retail. ::::20::

    that doesnt mean anything btw OB and retail, yea for CB-OB will be wiped but they havent said anything official about going into retail have they?

    There is no chance that they would allow beta testers to keep their characters. MMORPGs just don't work that way. They'd basically be stating that they don't give a shit about anyone that wasn't in beta. It'd be a very bad marketing move, and even though I plan to be in the beta, seeing the dev team make a decision like that would probably detour me from buying this game. Cause to me, how the dev team thinks and acts is about 40% of the reason why I buy a game to begin with. I don't want to be paying for 7-13 months just to realize that they want to ruin the game afterwards. That's a lot of wasted time and money on my end.

    I heard the amount of xp gained in beta is increased to allow more players to play with more content. And for release the xp earned will be decreased.  Just what I heard, don't quote me :p

    If that being true it would be a great disadvantage for anyone not to be in beta if they dont wipe the servers. So I am sure they will start completely over.

    They most likely will and imo they better wipe them (even mine when i get it) because it wouldnt be fair to every1 else who starts out besides it will be awesome to have every1 low lvl and equal (this will be the first time im playin a game from very very start image) its gonna be awesome despite the lag that will prolly occur.image

     Thank god! The last thing I'd want to see, is to walk into open beta on the first day and see a level 60 on a mount.

    Yea, it happened in Lineage ][. God that was aweful. I didn't realise people would forget about their lives to play a computer game for 85+ hours STRAIGHT.

    Yea, it happened in Lineage ][. God that was aweful. I didn't realise people would forget about their lives to play a computer game for 85+ hours STRAIGHT.

    You never played EQ did ya? ROFL, I remember 2 days after they released Halfling Rangers, standing in a 50+ zone next to a lv60 Halfling Ranger with his epic weapon.

    Then there were a few people I knew that played in shifts to PL characters. They were online 24/7 except for server downtimes.

    It wont surprize me to see a lv 60 within a week, nor to find out he was in beta.

    xp is as intended atm.

    else it would be very hard to rate quest rewards compared to critter killing. having to adjust all xp rewards to bring them into line with the 'new' xp pr monster wouldnt be easy .

    Blizzard also stated a few times that they were quite happy about the speed of progression.

    What you have the see is that this game is not just about building one character over 4 - 5 years.

    you actually get 8 (9 or more to be decided) character slots to goof around with and that you can actually play and have fun with.

    as for CB-Retail. yes characters will be whiped. this was one of the major mistake Lineage2 did (those that didn play the beta was already way way behind the adena / farming curve), and especially in a pvp oriented game this hurts double.

    the best we testers can do is play, enjoy it , and submit bugs, suggestions and balance issues as we find them, and not worry about keeping the toons in retail. hell we already got a huge headstart due to knowing most of the lvl 1 - 30 quests by heart by having had to play it 5 - 6 times during the beta (locked chars)

    see if they dont wipe out chars from OB to retail like they did in lineage 2, the closed beta ppl will have a great advantage over ppl not playin the game b4 in closed beta ^^ i hope they do wipe out all OB chars b4 retail..... if not, ill have to play OB 24/7 ^^ meep! image

    OF course they are they dont want the game to go retail and have like 1,000 lvl 60s owning everyone who buys the game cause that would be bad for their buisness.

    Not only that but WoW is MENT for casual player to play NOT hardcore powergamers...

    I would strongly suggest any Powergamers to not even bother cause your types will be the very first to complain..... at the end of the first week of retail =P

    (replying directly to the 1st poster, havnt read the whole thread... might be missing something)

    CB -> OB is almost ALWAYS wipped, this is because not everybody had the chance to play and they like to keep the playing field even...

    OB -> P2P is hard to say though BECAUSE since OB is open for EVERYBODY it means the playing field is completely even... alot of games are going stright from OB -> P2P without wipe now because it keeps more OB players in the game (and seeing as practically 99% of the games player base will be people from OB, it kind of makes sense)...

    look at games like Lineage 2... they kept players from OB -> P2P and IMO that was the best thing to do... leveling in L2 isnt very easy and i doubt all those people would have wanted to re-lvl if there was a wipe...

    IMO a wipe from CB -> OB is a good thing

    but a wipe from OB -> P2P is a very VERY bad idea...

    i know im going to hear "but what about the people who start at P2P"... show me these people... show me the people who would rather buy a game on launch date with no actuall gameplay experience when they had 2 weeks to play for free and get a feel for the game... everybody who will be buying for P2P launch will most likely be in the OB... player count DOESNT go up the day of P2P... it goes down...

    [edit] one more reaon for no wipe from OB -> P2P, is alot of people during OB will be demanding an answer on the wipe... if the company says "there will be a wipe" ALOT of people will stop playing completely... HOWEVER if the company says "there will NOT be a wipe" it will most likely bring even MORE people into the OB thus having more poeple for P2P...

    GMs want to be as helpful as possible under all circumstance. In this case however, I ask that players not rely on that quote for accurate information. The GMs don't always have the most up to date information on these types of issues.

    If they quit over a char whipe who cares? good riddance. They seen the majority of the game so they might not even play no matter what for very long anyways.

    Sides.. alot of beta players are whiners but they are a minority so /shrug.. if it is true the majority of them are pretty cool then I say let them quit the game be better for it.
