From what I saw in beta, it's just an asian theme slapped onto the same old mechanics we've had since EQ1. Same chokepoints at zone boundaries (even if there's no loading screen), same sitting around watching auto-attack while you wait for button cooldowns, same stupid monsters that run right up to you and slug it out face-to-face with no attempts at flanking or group tactics.
Yawn. I'm sure the folks worked hard on the engine and the graphics, and I did think some of the storylines were interesting.... but not enough for an MMO. I want improvements in gameplay mechanics. A good single-player game will beat the pants off this for story content, and eye-candy too.

lemme guess...u play EVE right?
Well i neve played it....looks really fun, but i like Aion more and thats why i will play it and u talk about flanking and group tactics, some single player games has them yes, but not all just like WoW and Aion..
Wait. I missed the Asian theme. Granted I only tried out the um what was it ... Asmodean folks, but they seemed fairly heavily based around Norse mythology.
The way they worked the combo system was nice too. Nothing new certainly, but still nice.

From your post what is an original MMO today? If Aion isn't bringing us anything new then what has and or will? SW:TOR? FFXIV? GW2?
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
The only reason I won't play is if OB really doesn't sit well with me. Which is very likely. I've played lots of random MMOs and liked them. I like mainstream and freeware. As long as it has a story and interesting features I'll probably like it.
Now at that one guy who declared there isn't any innovation in the game, my thoughts to you are: You want too much. And when a Dev makes a game for those players they end up being very bad. I.E. Age of Conan and WAR. Aion is the standard MMO with alot of combined features some games don't do. They got rid of mounts all together and gave aerial combat. That technically is innovation. The first Fantasy MMORPG with an aerial combat system. If anything thats the only concrete thing i'll mention
Playing: Guild Wars and Exteel Loved: WoW, Guild Wars, FFXI, and Lineage 2 Liked: Exteel, WAR, and Lineage 1 Hated:City of Heroes, City of Villians, Matrix Online, Runescape, and D&D Online. Waiting For: Aion, Guild Wars 2, FFXIV, and SW:TOR
I played the last three CB/s, well actually i didnt play much of the last CB weekend at all. Just couldnt make myself log on. The games art style is very appealing to me but other than that i didnt see that it brought anything new to the table.
- not convinced that this game has anything other than superficial improvements over other titles.
- don't care too much for the art direction
- don't care for leveling up just for the sake of it an longer (e.g. to get to the good part of the game, aka endgame).
- seems very linear
- some of my former DAoC buddies got the impression that PvP with whatever items/stats you have to grind will likely be quite time consuming - don't care for that either.
In conclusion, Aion to me seems to take a lot of existing concepts, does some polishing, but overall lacks the kind of features and gameplay advancements that would get me to play... been there done that, so to speak.
I"m curious about other people's reasons for not playing Aion when it launches. Give me your reason or reasons for not playing.
I played the CBs but it didn't excite me like I thought it would, the lore and story didn't draw me in enough to warrant grinding through the PvE content. In other words, too much linear hand holding from 1-25 for me to get into for a PvPvE game. Maybe if they allowed a alternate PvP zone for leveling starting at level 10, with it's own quest lines taking you into those areas, I would be more interested/excited/motivated to play....oh well, I'll check it out again in a few months.
"Small minds talk about people, average minds talk about events, great minds talk about ideas."
I played the Open Beta (which, of course was the final product in Asia) and I must say I wasn't impressed. The early levels, the setting, all uninspired garbage. After suffering through 10 levels I get to my REAL class and find that I'm marred with a bunch of abilities that essentially ROOT me for the duration of the animation. Ah, the AOC effect. No thanks - no thanks.
Upon reading further, I laugh at the easily exploitable points system, and the world PVP that will degenerate into a swarm fest where the strong get stronger and the weak can never hope to be on equal footing. In other words ; business as usual in the MMORPG world.
The area design is laughably linear, and the flying gimmick amounts to nothing more than... well a cheap gimmick. Another fun fact is that the two factions in this game not only look similar; but have mirror starting zones. It's always great seeing lazy design work so early in the game... In the end :
1 - Uninspired combat
2 - Generic world and lore
3 - Generic advance mechanism made even more painful by painfully slow leveling pace
4 - Melee abilities that have overly extravagant animations that ROOT you.
5 - Crap RVR system
6 - Gear Treadmill endgame ALA WoW
This game is the definition of a shallow experience who's sole purpose is no different from those who came before them.

I hate to say this, but leveling up is part of the MMO genre and if you dont like that, then you dont like playing MMO's anymore. I however seem to be the opposite of most. I enjoy the leveling process and end up hating the end game. I have never liked raiding as it is just to chaotic and frankly, I actually find it more boring than leveling up. But to each his own. I will be getting this game as I do love the art direction, the leveling and while I am not much on pvp, I do enjoy it to a certain extent. Good luck in finding the kind of MMO that you are hunting for, I feel it may be a while before you see it though.
tbh i never was looking for the next WoW...i was just looking for something fun and Aion just does not appeal to me. The game looks great and it seems to have all the right elements to make a cool MMO but it's a huge group of little things that turn me off.
/shrug...if it's super popular and people go apeshit over it i might give it a go 3+ months after launch. (i only bothered to play WoW because people were so crazy for it...was a good decision in the end)
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds -Solid non level based game -Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
I won't be playing it because I'm not a fan of the eastern-style MMOs/RPGs. I used to play them quite a bit back in the day, RPGs that is, because basically there wasn't anything else.
Since I've grown out of all that, and now that we have a broader selection of games, I'll play those. All in my opinion of course, different strokes for different folks.
Aion isn't anything new really. It doesn't add much to the table to be honest... Just a new gathering-place for fans of this flavor of game.
Save your flames, it's called an opinion.
I'll be playing Fallen Earth, which is coming out soon. Aion, Champions Online, and Fallen Earth is the round-up right now. The only one that interests me (and has kept my interest for a while) is the latter.
Champions and Fallen Earth are both rather niche. Aion can be argued as a niche game, but it gathers a lot of players from the eastern market.
Also, I'm keeping my eye on EarthRise. It's still a ways out, but it's good to see more sci-fi/alternative MMOs in the market.
It seems there is and will always be some everlasting issue with long time MMO players. They're not surprised by anything anymore. And they just don't sink there teeth in, because they don't care if they'll actually like they just want it to be new. My opinion of any MMO is to give it a chance and try it. If I have fun and like no matter what flaws I like it. I liked WoW, not because of the game but because I found it fun for a good 3 years. I like FFXI, not because it was Final Fantasy but because I had fun with the combat systems, but the overall quest/grind system wasn't my style in those days. I like Guild Wars, not because it was free, but because I had fun playing a MMO that didn't really bind me to a large level cap. I like WAR, not because of the PvP, but because it introduced a flawed way to set up PvP within PvE. People say any new mmo is the glossy shiny new version of another title. It's true, anyone who say's it isn't is a fool. But to sit there and say that you won't give it a chance because it's just like the same game you had played for however many months. One day there will be a game out there that satisfy's your taste, but do you believe after so much time your not going to grow bored of it? Your going to. The Best Game never exists, mainly because Best is always beaten. When it's not people start to stray away from it, because they're sick of it. WoW is probably the biggest example atm. It is the *best* mmo in the market in the majority stand point. Is that my opinion? No. But thats because I played it off and on for 3 years and I'm never really impressed with the game. Do I come back every expansion anyway? yeah. I like the game. Bah its way early and I'm rambaling way to damn much. I hope some of that made sense.
Playing: Guild Wars and Exteel Loved: WoW, Guild Wars, FFXI, and Lineage 2 Liked: Exteel, WAR, and Lineage 1 Hated:City of Heroes, City of Villians, Matrix Online, Runescape, and D&D Online. Waiting For: Aion, Guild Wars 2, FFXIV, and SW:TOR

In convenient bullet points we have
1 - Uninspired combat 2 - Generic world and lore 3 - Generic advance mechanism made even more painful by painfully slow leveling pace 4 - Melee abilities that have overly extravagant animations that ROOT you. 5 - Crap RVR system 6 - Gear Treadmill endgame ALA WoW
This game is the definition of a shallow experience who's sole purpose is no different from those who came before them.
So what you are saying is that every MMO made has been shallow and uninspired. Hrmm, I think this genre is not for you.
In your bullet points.
1. Combat chains, not uninspired at all. Surely not the newest thing on the market but it has its moments.
2. Seems to me the world and lore is rich with its own story.
3.Leveling is leveling, obviously you dont like it. (hence, this genre may not be for you)
4. I love the animations, however I do agree the rooting could possibly be a problem, however, the enemy will also face the same problem.
5. The RVR seems to be about the same as DAOC in a way and in my opinion better.
6. Wont argue that point, I dont like endgame treadmills much either.
1000 ways of making a teenager asian boy with squeaky voice, crappy cyborg ending pvp heavy plate armors, not a interesting set of skills for gladiator, lag, and MAIN reason is that no rl friends interested in this game.

To those that are on the fence. You don't want to come to the dance late.
It's gonna be a hard road for ya on a mature server. If you do my best advice for you is to roll on a new server.
Velika: City of Wheels: Among the mortal races, the humans were the only one that never built cities or great empires; a curse laid upon them by their creator, Gidd, forced them to wander as nomads for twenty centuries...
Just has no interest. Sure I love the art and the music is good, but the game play is just....okay....The zones are very linear for the first 20 or so levels. That sure is fun!
Just feels like it's missing something big to be really fun.

I cant really kill the assholes on my team/side.
Should be an interesting thread, I plan to play lets just hope the launch is smooth ncsoft seems to know what they are doing..
Is that REALLY the reason you won't play aion?
That made me go "hehehe".
they will prolly still be playing...erm...wot that game again....from blizz?
cant remember......
./end sarcasm

I'm still stuck on if I am going to play or not....
Mainly what is keeping me wondering is the forced PvP since I am generally a PvE player, we'll see though just depends on how bored I am at the time.
