LF F2P Pve MMO (historical preferred)

TrashcantoyTrashcantoy Member Posts: 827

Hi everyone, i think the title says enough. I am looking for a free2play mmo thats mainly PvE, and i prefer historical themed ones. When you recommend an mmo please tell me something about it, just looking up some f2p mmos u dont know about wont help me. It would also help if the cash shops are not unbalancing the game, but thats almost too much to ask for i guess.

UPDATE: mmos with built-in bots are a no-go for me

f2p mmos ive played:

Martial Heroes, 9dragons, Dekaron (EU version of 2moons) and Maplestory.

Games im going to try, so dont mention these: Runes of Magic, Perfect World.

MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

I'm probably going to be suggesting this one a lot...

Atlantica Online. It is.... historical, in a way. I wouldn't try actually matching up its history with real history, but you'll find all sorts of historical figures in the game as you roam around. All the locations are 'real' locations in the world, just a game form of them.

It's primarily PvE with the option to PvP for fun/penalty free. I never liked PvP but I loved it in Atlantica. You'll never be spamming a skill bar because there isn't one. The battle system is turn-based, like a simplified Final Fantasy. You have a main character and a party of mercenaries you control in battle. Each have a couple special skills that add strategy to the battles. Swordsman, Spearman, Gunner, Shaman (healer), Monk, Cannoner, Beast Tamer, Spartan, etc, etc. The list of Mercenaries you can hire goes on. Max of 9 mercs in your party, last I checked. But you can also party with others for a massive team.

Atlantica online has: Crafting, mounts, teleportation (scrolls or the travel agency), player driven economy, pretty graphics, costumes (and other items) from cash shop (can be bought in game though), guilds, dungeons, guild activities, guild PvP (I think). There's tons of items, and armor/weapon set for every.... 10? levels-ish, fishing... the list goes on.

You can create a guild of your own at lvl 20 for a relatively small fee. 50k, which isn't much at that level.

I started drifting away around lvl 50 but plan to go back. It can be quite a grind in the higher levels but it is still rather fun. The system is different from most MM'O's. I loved it.

Atlantica Online - Check out some screens and videos to get an idea of it.

hi all, thnx for the replies.

ah yes i heard a lot of atlantica when it first came out, i believe its considered one of the better f2p mmos out there, totally forgot about it till this (very informative) post by noob2epic :)

ill also have a look on the other ones mentioned, thanks!

edit: i did try TCoS when it still was p2p (was on a trial) and the game couldnt grab my attention, the combat system was pretty nifty though

edit2: i notice jady dynasty has a built-in bot feature, going to update my OP to say that i definitely dont want a game thats playing itself ;)

If you do try Atlantica, and create a character on the Thebes server, I'd gladly help you out with anything you need. I think I even have some old starter armor and crap. >.< *pack rat* Just let me know.

Edit: Oh, and Runes of Magic is pretty fun. I also had a level... 40ish? in Perfect World MY. Got old after awhile but was one of my first MMO experiences.

hey erm.. i might try atlantica online... can you tell me a bit more bout it?

  • noob2Epicnoob2Epic Member Posts: 32

I'll try. Also check out the site and screenshots. Trying the game itself is a good idea too.

    • Character creation: Pretty basic, a few options for hair and face and colors. Pick your class via weapon. Ranges from sword to axe to bow to gun to cannon to staff to guitar.
    •
    • Learning curve: If you read what they tell you on the screen you're good to go. Mini tutorial at start.
    •
    • Controls: WASD + point and click, no jumping. You can sit with X though when you get the skill early on.
    •
    • Mercenaries: You get to hire... 3? mercenaries at first. 2 or 3 I think. And only get a few types to pick from. As you progress you get to hire more and of different types. Atlantica Online also adds new mercenaries to the mix through patches. You can fire/hire/store mercenaries as you please. You can also find some mercs. walking around that you can win over if you have room for them (based on your level).  Like I said, each have a couple special skills, which you level with books. Viking can freeze an enemy (they lose a turn or two), Monk can protect against spells and heal your Main every turn, Shaman heals and hexes, etc...
    •
    • Crafting: Enemies drop loot and boxes with materials. You use these materials you pick up to create a whole slew of items and armors and junk. Enemies also drip weapon set boxes.
    •
    • Info Sharing: You collect monster info by battling monster. You can then share your info with other players. You can also teach crafting skills to other players and level your skills via NPC or a player with a high enough crafting level.
    •
    • Market: Some items have a default price, but for the most part the players drive the market prices up and down. It's neat. Really a player driven economy.
    •
    • Bosses: For some quests you need to defeat bosses. Works like a regular battle but their meaner and, of course, have a party of lesser monsters with them to annoy you.
    •
    • Graphics: AO has its own style but the graphics are pretty and nice to look at. I loved exploring the world just to see the landscape. Rome, Japan, etc...

Another fun game is Guild Wars, in a different way. You buy the game and then play for free for ever.
