My first impessions of Darkfall

Death1942Death1942 Member UncommonPosts: 2,587

So i finally decided to take the plunge.

This is a quick overview of what i experianced from Purchase through to loading the game for the first time:

Torrent download went at about 230kb/s (i normally download at about 260 so it was decent speeds for me) plenty of seeders all the time which was good.  Once installed (moderate install time) i was stumped as to how to get it to patch.  After a quick search of the forum i restarted the patcher as an Admin (i use Vista) and it began to patch.  This was a slow process as it patched at about 50kb/s but the files werent too large.  Overall it was a decent experiance

First steps ingame:

Ok so i knew about the ganking in darkfall and i know it is notorious for noob ganking.  As soon as i was online i was greeted by a screen that explained the controls.  Knowing this game is harsh i took note of as much of the controls as i could (most important ones being R to sheathe weapon and F for actions).  Once in i was confused as to where i was to go, i spent about a minute trying to talk to what i though was an NPC when infact it was someone from a clan.  Realising my mistake i quickly found the noob quest giver.  Quests were nothing flash at all and hardly rewarding but they do point you on the right track.  I liked how they lead from combat to crafting and then to gathering reagents for magic.  I was a little bit dissapointed that they never explain archery but i was deadset on making a ranger guy anyway so i went out of my way to learn.

Combat:

Easily one of the best things about this game.  Using FPS skills (cant think of a better word) i was able to pickup archery quite quickly and enjoyed it considerably.  Melee was pretty much a click fest but the movement of the monsters (little bastards) was enough to keep me on my toes and always 'aiming'.  Magic was basically aim at the ground to increase your chances of hitting things but i never really explored it that much.

Community:

1st person i stumbled across (after that clan guy) was killing goblins at the nearby gobbo village.  She was nice enough to help me kill my first 2 goblins (both swarmed me before i was ready and i was struggling to melee em) although she never said anything (no idea if there is a /say i did not see one, most talk was using global channels).  I quickly tracked down the clan i had my eyes set on (recomended to me by a fellow MMORPG member) and they were very friendly and helpful.  While there was plenty of stupid arguments and discussions in the Racial Alliance tab (basically global chat) there were plenty of people willing to answer questions (plenty of those...this game lacks helpful tips)

The world:

Personally i think this is the best world i have come across.  I like the detail of the landscape (even if the graphics are a tad bland) and i really love the density of the environment...something missing from so many MMO's.  The world itself is quite pretty and i loved the area that i was grinding in (Dwarf stater area, next to a Volcanoe)

Crafting:

I enjoyed it.  Farming mats is basically an AFK sort of thing (infact i am chopping wood as i write this).  You chop/mine until the resource is gone (quite a while) or you run out of stamina and have to rest.  You are able to find wood in town (safe from ganking) but its usually nearly gone.  Outside of town all the big trees (lots of em) can be chopped for wood.  I prefer this to the stupid only certain trees can be farmed style of resource gathering of other games.  Crafting does suffer from a lack of tips and i had to ask my clan how to find iron ore.  Crafting is quite diverse and very rewarding (a rarity in games) and i did not mind the grind for resources.  Ultimately you will end up grinding goblins (or whatever you want to kill) for a while to earn the cash for crafting as it costs a whopping 500g just to learn 1 crafting skill (there are way more than 10 that i saw).

Overall:

overall i think this is quite a fun game to play and is very rewarding.  So far i have seen the negative sides of the game (1 random crash, 1 gank by a highly geared/skill person and plenty of issues with mobs) but the good things outweigh these (solid community (if you know where to look), great world, rewarding gameplay).  I would recommend this to anyone who likes PvP or enjoys a decent world with rewarding gameplay.  I warn anyone who does try it about the harsh nature of the game and always remember to bank often (and keep spare weapons and armour).

score (for the lazy ones): 7.5/10

MMO wish list:

-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads

You are 18 bro from looking at your profile.

If you can handle DF then its all good from here.

Darkfall seems to have issues with the older PVE playerbase, which is quite fond of the no ganking (no risk) rule.

    Good luck

What I was aiming at with this was the fact that the younger you are the better you can adapt to different play styles, as opposed to older gamers that come from Everquest that got stuck on the quest dynamic and absolutely refuse to take up new challenges such as the possibility of being ganked.

Glad you are having fun. Sounds like you are playing at Idawoll no? It is a nice area, just north is a great kobold camp once you get a bit better, off to the west is a fantastic harvesting area and south-east is a harder but managable camp of (kobolds..i think..)

That should keep you going for a while. Really go for that archery, its very strong, and its pretty much the only source of dextierity which you want in spades. Also learn bowing ASAP, its 1wood and 1metal for 20 arrows.

Edit: one down side of quick clanning: people can, and believe me WILL decalre war with your clan so they can freely PK you. This should hopefully be changed soon!

I rolled dwarf and yes i am in Idawoll...truely is one of the most beautiful towns i have seen in a game (the way it flows into the volcanoe side is awesome).

I did check out those kobolds to the west and in those mountains (with the trolls) but was ganked out of the area by lots of reds (some fellow dwarves formed a party and hunted down the reds, it was a nice gesture of comradeship).  The mountains were amazing to see and the giant lift was a nifty idea.

As for me being young and open to new things, i think it is vital in life  not just games to be open to new things so i try my best to give everything a fair shot (even Darkfall)

Kinda tells you a few things eh? If 99% of the player base left, then it mean both young and older players left, meaning it isn't just older players who don't like to be ganked.

I'm  over 50, play EVE and live in 0.0 space.

    And I'm a carebear.

But I did enjoy the read here, almost, almost makes me want to try DF.

But today it will be Aion.

    99%? lol

Anywho, Meridian was hardcore pvp as well.

    (yes...i'm an older gamer ;-)

Anywho, carebear, pvp or pve has NOTHING to do with age.

When mmo's arrived years ago they were hardcore PVP. Players weren't pvp' er by nature, but it was a possible path to walk. Some decided to pk, others didn't. Then companies noticed there were more potential players. Players that didn't like the idea of being pk 'ed so non pvp servers AND games were created. It wasn't something the original players asked for.

Do i have problems with pvp nowadays? Yes. Not because i'm a carebear (hey. i play Darkfall, Mortal Online and Eve) but because players are almost forced to pvp because of the game's mechanics. I want to play a game which is geared towards RPG. Give me a masssive world to explore, creatures to tame and kill, buildings and ships to construct, player driven economy and villages. THEN pour a pvp possibility over it. PVP should be in the game but NOT it's selling point.

Anywho, MO and Darkfall can become the game as described above so i keep my fingers crossed every day a patch arrives.

thats actually backwards...Wow's average age is like 16 where pvp games like eve, shadowbane, and daoc(kicking my self on calling it a pvp, not really any risks here) the average age is like 28. (Most of the people I played with in shadowbane were old enough to be my dad).

Most of the old games had ganking and risks- this whole casual carebear thing exploded onto the scene within the last 7 years- before that it was a sub-genre, now its become THE genre. The isn't enough of us old types to keep these real pvp games alive anymore hence the several failed releases and the deaths of several classics.

thats what a controversial PVP game should do.

    just and update:

Its been about 5 days now and a crapload of things has happened.  Firstly i am still in that clan (we own Angfrost) and i ran/swum to the city...got attacked by a shark along the way but was close to an island (very lucky to escape with my life).  Once i reached the clan city i was a bit confused and undergeared so after a few gankings by trolls and goblins (much tougher ones than on ML) and loosing my (crappy) cloth armour members of the clan gave me 3 full sets of banded armour (sort of like plate armour..but not as good) and a selection of weapons.

Thats when things kicked off.  I formed hunting groups with the other noobs who had just swum to the city (gave away one of my suits of armour) and we farmed the trolls and zombies for a few hours and talked.  Great bunch of people.  I also participated in taking over hamlets for tax (the clan gave me a horse and a siege hammer) but by far the best thing so far has been the PvP

Our alliance is very friendly and helpful and we have had many calls for help in the past few days. I responded to 3, suiting up and mounting up and riding off in a group of clannies (very awesome seeing a group of 5-10 horses gallop in formation) and the PvP has been frantic and epic.  From trapping some reds in a castle (they were farming for gold), to defending a fellow clan city (was interesting to see the different kinds of cities) to defending our own walls (nothing is more satisfying than defending your own clan city), it has certainly been a very busy 5 days.

I look forward to helping out anyone who needs my help and i look forward to helping my clan grow into a bigger and stronger group of people.

p.s if your interested my clans name is Dominion, on NA1  If you wish to chat ingame  then feel free to message me, my name is Argohen Blackhammer
