Elite - A Game Using Less Memory Than Most Emails!

ScotScot Member LegendaryPosts: 24,273

Yes you memory guzzling, picture perfect graphic whores. ‘Elite’ was the game we played back in the day, and it ran on less memory than an modern email!

So when the devs in your MMO say its too complex to fit in, will take up too much memory etc. Tell them to go and check out how a Universe was created by David Braben and Ian Bell to run on 22K memory. That’s right 22K!

Yea this brings back memories. Those were the days when games were generally very imaginative making the most of limited resources.

Another great example of Moore's Law. Give people access to that much space (developers and users alike) and they'll find uses for it that you can never imagine. "640K ought to be enough for anybody" - Bill Gates 1981

Funny thing... the first open world space combat sims... yet it par far has the most features of any combat space sim(not counting the sequels ofc)

yeah that seems about right for that time and for the graphics.   The thing is now days graphics are getting so complex that it has to take up a ton of memory and to have a huge open world and amazing graphics just can't happen yet. Just compare 2 games that are out right now.

AOC one of if not the best graphics out there for a MMO. The game is very instanced and not many huge open zones. Fallen Earth not the best graphics for a game that just released today but the game right now is 1000 square kilometers and it has no zones. Devs can pull things off they just either have to sacrifice graphics or the huge open world.

Oh yeah I forgot about EVE which is an amazingly huge game and has great graphics as well. So yeah space games in theory take up less because they don't need to render as much.

I dread to think how many  hours i spent trying to manualy dock my ship in a space station, before i could save up for a atomatic docking.

I loved that game, happy memories.
