If I'm not mistaken it adds to the base game (I.E. classes?, races etc... as well as to the loot table.)

No problem on the info, it's a fun game great modules out there for it as well. It's not as great as NWN1 but it's close IMO.

the expansion before SOZ gives you more races and classes and adds onto the story. SOZ is more of a do what you want, boring kinda experience. Although the story and game itself i found was amazing.
EDIT: mask of the betrayer is the expansion that adds to the original story.

There used to be a bug that prevented you from advancing a character if the expansion wasn't installed (if you chose a race / class combo from the expansion without it installed). So it's probably a good idea to have it installed either way.
In addition to new race / class combinations the expacs also add some new graphical elements to the character models (the elementa-based races and IIRC the drow).
SoZ was my fave expansion. The overland map and other new aspects should be staples of future NWN titles.
To each their own though.
You should install the expansions (preferably all of them) for the added races/classes and other content that will carry over to the primary campaign. Personally, I do not care for any of the expansion campaigns other than Mask of the Betrayer, and I feel even that one is sub par.
You should also get Kaedrin's PRC pack. It's a free user made mod that takes many prestige classes from D&D paper and pencil and adds them to NWN2. Everything about the mod is balanced and quality, and it will add significantly more options for character builds (practically doubled the replay factor for me). His site is here.
