I loved xenogears on the playstation but found out that due to it taking too long in production and cuts they were forced to leave out a large swathe of the intended content and were pushed to release what they had. Thats why at a certain point mid game you suddenly get all these cut scenes which tell you whats happened and suddenly get fast forwarded into a much later part in the story. One reason they went on to redo that Xenosaga... which I just found kind bleh.
now: GW2 (11 80s). Dark Souls 2. future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord. "Bro, do your even fractal?" Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.

One great old RPG on my parents old 386 computer was this one called Dark Sun or something like that. I remember back then the games had this copyright protection where every so often you had to turn to page 12 and type what word was on line 10 in the game manual. If you didn't do it right you couldn't progress.
LOL, I still have fun playing a square box running like hell from those damn dragons. My fav part of that game was finding the easter egg of the guy's name. That is definately a classic game.
One that I have fond memories of, and first got me into RPGs would be the original Dragon Warrior on the NES. Not what I would call the greatest of all time, but it was fun back in the day.
As for the best, one of the better one's story wise would be Final Fantasy 3, maybe 7, and well, honestly about all of the FF's. Also, just about anything Bioware has done ranks in my lists as well.
1) (PS1)The legend of the dragon 2)(PS1) Vagrant Story 3)(PS1) Breath of fire IV 3)(PS2) Baldur´s Gate 2: Dark alliance 4) (PS2) Xenosaga
Vagrant story was so great. I played that through at least 50 times.
1) Final Fantasy Tactics (not those horrible abominations that were on the GBA)
2) Super Metroid
3) Super Mario RPG
4) The rest of the ps1 Final Fantasy Games
Would you put Metroid in the Rpg category? If so I would place Castlevania II and SotN in my list of top 50 Rpgs.
Of course I would. RPG is Role Playing Game. You're a bounty hunter killing metroids. I guess you could call it action adventure but it's such a great game that it can fit any genre =D. Castlevania was an epic game, the ps1 version was the best imo.

Well yeah if Castlevania SOTN is alowed i prob put it in my top 3 that game is the best platformer ever made, better than Mario for me.
For me, 1. Baulders Gate 2 2. Fallout 2 3. Final Fantasy 7 4. Morrowind 5. Final Fantasy Tactics 6. Breath of Fire 3 7. Suikoden 2 8. Bards Tale (old one) 9. Oblivion 10. Wizardry 8 Also Vagrant Story, Ultima 5,persona 3 and 4 all other final fantasys deserve honourable mention
Finally someone said a suikoden game. Thats my favorite series of RPG's. (FF series was my favorite for the longest time, but I am not to much of a fan of the sci-fi settings that they have turned too). I love the fact that all the suikodens are related on a timeline in the same world. (excluding the DS one). I Have been waiting for Suikoden VI for the longest time, since TGS came and went w/o word it looks like I am SOL.

I loved all the FF's on the Playstation 1 and 2. Skies of Arcadia on the Dreamcast, and ChronoCross were my favorites.
Not a very "deep" RPG though, but no other games story have compelled me more...
Mass Effect.
I also liked Baldurs Gate and Kotor series.
Fallout 2
System Shock 2. Assuming of course one considers it an RPG
both The Fallout and X Shock series are great but these stand out to me
Baldurs Gate
with honorable mention that goes to Fallout...
From newbies I would surely say Witcher
1) (PS1)The legend of the dragon

I think for me it is Planescape Torment.

Back in that day, I loved 'Bard's Tale' for the C64 and the D&D game on Intellivision.
Man, I'm old.
Hard to pick just one, but for me is has to be Suikoden 2.
Other greats that many hours have been spent on include FF 5, 6, 7, Xenogears.
Recent greats include The Witcher and of course Fallout 3.
For me,

5. Final Fantasy Tactics
