I usually ignore the troll and critical posts. I look for how many and how raving the good posts are. If a game doesn't have many good posts I look to see why. I don't necessarily believe the good posts, just look for the quantity. I also see what type of player is posting the good posts, pvp, pve, crafter, etc. This gives me a very good idea if I'll like the game.
What MMORPG.com needs are moderators that let people fight their own fights, and can tell what is dry humor/sarcasm. Too many mods crack down on opinionated posts when they really should just butt out and let the threads play out.
I have often responded to trolls and ignorant posts only to get a warning and even a ban. This is the internet, people learn quickly how to defend themselves or not post drivel. We don't need to be babysat and have our feelings protected.
I sometimes feel like the discovery of this web site is what began my downward spiral of MMO gaming. Not only did it open my eyes up to so many new games that I tried them all and felt stale afterwards, but reading all of the stupid critiques about games makes me actually notice and be annoyed by the smallest things in game that I probably never would have noticed before. While I used to just buy a game if it looked fun and play it, I now spend weeks researching every single game and engraining all of these shitty reviews and first impressions into my brain. Its a love hate relationship. Ive come too far to stop using the site now. Im pretty much addicted to it haha. But sometimes I just wish I was an innocent gamer again that wasnt subjected to all the garbage I have to read on here (from posters not site admin) I guess these forums have just made me too serious about games. Hell Id probably still be playing WoW and having a good time if It werent for these forums, which honestly would be better than not being able to enjoy any game at all.
No, always have to take forums with a grain of salt. Certainly aren't useless by any means and they help me pass the time at work. Hell, sometimes they even give out some good info thanks to a poster.
Overall though I use them more to pass the time at work. It's more bullshit than anything else at times on these forums but then again that's how it is on most forums. No better or worse here. I don't come here for validations, advice, or to take what people say here to heart.
1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.
2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.
3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

I can relate to you on this. I have a feeling a lot of folks experience this same thing. The important thing to remember is that if it didn't bother before you knew about it, then why should it bother you after reading about it?
You gotta make a stand and enjoy your game, regardless of what anyone says.

I use this site as well as others to pass time during work hours, and it works quite well. If you let forums bother your ingame experience, you should stop reading them. It's that simple. Forum talk can change your perspective ingame, it can change your mind about a game, it can affect how you think about a game. It's pack mentality, you feel emboldened to think one way when there are others that think the same way.
If you take this site/forum too seriously, then you should stop reading it imo, and get back to enjoy playing games.
Its a love hate relationship with this site. There is alot of useful info that you really cant find anywhere else and you just have separate the BS from the actual posts that contribute to various topics.
(AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!! Fires a plunger at a moderater that is looking at this post)
All my opinions are just that..opinions. If you like my opinions..coolness.If you dont like my opinion....I really dont care. Playing: ESO, WOT, Smite, and Marvel Heroes
Well the problem is not having a few troll post or flame wars... The problem to me is that at least half of mmorpg.com thread are trolls or flame wars.
Moderation is tough, no question, and the more severe you are, the more people you tend to drive away... As someone pointed, page visits are essential to ad pricing, so it is essential to keeping the site free... What a conundrum, eh?
