If marijuana were legalized...

TealaTeala Member RarePosts: 7,627

If marijuana were legalized and you had a choice to smoke marijuana or drink, say wine, or beer, or whatever, which would you choose?

If you've never smoked it - would you try it?

I think marijuana is the better choice. I have witnessed the effects of both and only alcoholics would be crazy enough to say they'd prefer alcohol.

Don't smoke (anything), don't drink, have no interest to try it even if it were legal.

This also might end up in the religion and politics thread, since by it's nature could turn political very easily.

Don't you worry little buddy. You're dealing with a man of honor. However, honor requires a higher percentage of profit

As I don't drink alcohol and don't smoke tobbaco, I'd have to say no if it was legalised, I wouldn't be tempted to try it.

However, as long as anyone who did choose too try it , didn't do that activity around me and didn't deside to then go and drive a car AND as long as it was legal, I can't see why people shouldn't be free to do what they choose.

Although I freely belive in people's rights to do any of them, I would never do any of them myself.  It is stupid to poison the body when there are all these pleasurable things one can do that don't involve poison.

Or, you know, people who don't like marijuana.

I've done a lot of things, in a lot of methods, and can honestly say that I've pretty much become disillusioned with drugs in almost any and all forms. Street-corner nirvana is an idiot's paradise. And as for the social use, I can honestly say I've had a better time without them. Pot makes me anti-social. Shrooms make me paranoid. Salvia makes me a giggling idiot. I could go on.

I've mostly resigned myself to a fine glass of scotch when in social company, and a pipe packed with an aromatic flavored tobacco when I meditate. It's good stuff, but I don't need it, and recognize it as such. I think it's good for others to recognize the same. Legal or illegal, the social context of drugs needs to be revamped before people can be allowed to partake of anything.

Here in the UK alcohol is legal to drink at the age 18, and marijuana is a class B drug. It's the most retarded thing I've ever heard my life. The way I see it either ban both or legalize both, for me, it's the matter of principle.

This topic again?  Man Teala, you're really addicted to pot aren't you?

Personally I wouldn't have picked either, because both equally taste & smell nasty.  I have no need to get high myself.   I do believe in legal medical marijuana for people who have chronic pain, but don't want to get the bad side effects of taking usual pain killers.  It works.

Other than that, if you need to relief stress or find a way to sleep better, might I suggest exercise?  That and/or go out to raves/clubs to dance on weekends.  They work great, relieves stress and make you sleep like a baby when you get home.

No...well...no...seriously I am not addicted to it.   It just that well I think we're getting closer to seeing it become legal.   I just thought I would ask what people thought - if it does become legal.

  • MardyMardy Member Posts: 2,213

    Ok

And I wasn't picking on you or trying to be judgemental.  I personally don't care what people do in the privacy of their own homes, as long as they don't hurt people.  But if I was to cast a vote at a booth for or against legalizing it, I'd put my no on it.  I'll have no problems dealing with the outcome from a majority vote.  I just don't think there are as many people supporting this as you think.

Forum talks is one thing, politicians talking is also one thing (because they want your tax dollars, that's what this is all about for them).

I believe a recent Zogby poll (Zogby International is an American market research, opinion polling firm founded in 1984 by John Zogby.) showed 58% support for the legalization of marijuana in California.

Are you are saying the only reason politicians are talking about legalizing marijuana is because they want tax dollars?!  Marijuana used to be legal in the US:

The decision of the United States Congress to pass the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was based on hearings, reports and in part on testimony derived from articles in newspapers owned by William Randolph Hearst, who had significant financial interests in the timber industry, which manufactured his newsprint.

Hearst sympathized with Harry J. Anslinger in his war against marijuana. Jack Herer and others argue that Hearst's paper empire (he owned hundreds of acres of timber forests and a vast number of paper mills designed to manufacture paper from wood pulp) in the early 1930s was threatened by hemp, which: 1) like wood pulp, could also be used to manufacture paper and 2) also had an advantage over wood pulp, because it could be regrown yearly as well. Between 1936 and 1937, Hearst associated marijuana with hemp in his newspapers and published many of the stories that Anslinger fabricated. Hearst played a major part in aiding the anti-marijuana movement, leading to its prohibition in the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937, a law which also effectively outlawed hemp.

Here is a sample of the propaganda against marijuana that Hearst printed in his papers:

I can list over a thousand uses for marijuana but here are some that are pretty significant:

-Biofuels such as biodiesel and alcohol fuel can be made from the oils in hemp seeds and stalks, and the fermentation of the plant as a whole, respectively.  Henry Ford grew industrial hemp on his estate after 1937.  Filtered hemp oil can be used directly to power diesels.  The oil industry has thousands of lobbyist to lobby congress and protect their interest.

-Fiber:  it produces 250% more fiber than cotton and 600% more fiber than flax when grown on the same land.  It produces paper much more effectively than rain forests but the Timber industry lobbies against the production and cultivation of cannabis.

-Medicine: Medical cannabis specialist Tod H. Mikuriya recorded over 250 indications(indication is a medical term which means any symptom or occurrence in a disease, which serves to direct to suitable remedies.) for medical cannabis, as classified by the International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems.

Studies have shown cannabis or cannabinoids to be useful in treating alcohol abuse, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD or AD/HD) amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, collagen-induced arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, atherosclerosis, bipolar disorder, childhood mental disorders, colorectal cancer, depression, diabetic retinopathy, dystonia, epilepsy, digestive diseases, gliomas, hepatitis C, Huntington's disease, hypertension, urinary incontinence, leukemia, skin tumors, morning sickness, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Parkinson's disease, pruritus, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), sickle-cell disease, and sleep apnea.

Guess which industry has billions of dollars invested into lobbying congress against the pharmaceutical applications of cannabis?

If anything, politicians will lose money trying to legalize marijuana.

I know you signified that politicians only want our taxes but somebody has to collect them.  Right now, in California, marijuana is a $14-billion industry, putting it above vegetables ($5.7 billion) and grapes ($2.6 billion).  It is completely unregulated and untaxed.  Because it is illegal, the black market price is much higher than production costs.  If it were regulated and taxed, the government would make money from this billion dollar industry that they let slip through their fingers.  The production and cultivation of marijuana doesn't cost very much and when it is legalized the black market won't be making money from an inflated price caused by risk.

"If all fossil fuels and their derivatives, as well as trees for paper and construction were banned in order to save the planet, reverse the Greenhouse Effect and stop deforestation; then there is only one known annually renewable natural resource that is capable of providing the overall majority of the world's paper and textiles; meet all of the world's transportation, industrial and home energy needs, while simultaneously reducing pollution, rebuilding the soil, and cleaning the atmosphere all at the same time... and that substance is -- the same one that did it all before -- Cannabis Hemp... Marijuana!" -Jack Herer

Honestly, this thread is proof of the general theory that people won't go out and try marijuana simply because it's legal.

I'm not here to complete my forum PVP dailies.

Arbadacarba, I think you have too much time on your hands lol. I think if we want to know how much the public would try pot if it was legal why don't we just look at Canada? Not perfect for the theory but still useful.

Well, in general, it can be taken not only to get high, it is also taken to get rid of stress and it carries medicinal properties, and this has long been proven. I recommend you better look at one site through which you can find good and high-quality seeds. Good luck to you!
