Finding the fun in EVE

AxehiltAxehilt Member RarePosts: 10,504

I'm giving EVE another try.

Is there a guide to finding the fun in EVE?

Or perhaps some key comments you guys could give me to start me in the right direction?

Last time, I recall the boredom of alternating between two very non-interactive states of gameplay:

  • waiting for mining to finish
  • waiting for my ship to get places

I assume there's more to EVE.  So what's the best way to go about getting to the fun in EVE?  I really like crafting, and I like PVP in games where the combat is deep and interesting.  I also like interesting PVE, but I never got the impression that was a big part of EVE (please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Basically I'd like to avoid non-interactive boring tasks like mining was, and find the highly interactive stuff.

Throw yourself into danger, whether your a miner/cargo runner/fighter or anything

    Worked for me :)

theirs guides to more enjoyable activites or how to make something more exciting, but i haven't played the game in awhile so I don't know where they are at.

If you like PvP then get out of safe systems as soon as you have a ship outfitted as best you can and try it out. Your going to die, especially if your just starting off, but it helps you learn what works and doesn't work and how you can improve your strategy maybe. If your into hauling cargo then make some dangerous, but possibly very profitable runs. If you like mining, try mining in a dangerous low security system, and seeking out rare materials. Also make sure to join a corp and help further their goals and such, that way if you run out of ideas of something to do, you'll have corp activites.

Eve's one of those games where you literally have to go out and make/find your own fun, rather than have it served to you.

and if you find the game isn't very interactive, trust me, when your out in low-sec space carrying expensive cargo, you are not going to leave your computer most likely, and will be scanning the hell out of systems for possible pirates.

I dunno... get in touch with a PvP-oriented corp and go on from there. Whatever you do, don't trust fanbois in anything because what they might call fun might actually be quite boring 90% of the time. Difference is, they find the 10% worth the wait. Some don't.

I got to Eve because I thought I needed a change. Now I try to find more fun and more action all the time. Sometimes it delivers, sometimes it doesn't. Mostly I just try to find out what the fuz is all about. Yep, it is definately not as good as the fans claim it to be. But it is adequate. So I'll continue playing until something better turns up.

Throw caution to the wind, with caution.

That's the only way you can enjoy EVE. Nothing you have in that game is precious to you. Nothing. Use them like tools to get a laugh. Even when you're reduced to nothing, you still have you - the ultimate tool. If you get attached to your stuff, you'll hate the game when you lose it - and you will lose it.

It doesn't take long to get cash if you know where to look. So spend some time finding out where to look before you get yourself into any danger (go scouting in a cheap tank frigate). Find out how long it'll take to get something and with what equipment and just work you way up the tiers [so you can gauge the amount of time you'd have to put into replacing lost ships]::

Start with a frigate. Come up with the best possible fitting that suits your needs (takes experimentation). You'll lose a lot of frigates, but keep trying until you stop losing them as much.

Then get a destroyer or a cruiser. Fit it for PvP. You'll probably lose a lot of them, too.

Just keep practicing and replacing cheap ships until you get good at fitting and fighting. If a ship is too expensive to lose two or three times over, don't fly it.

Make some friends, but don't rely on them. Join a corp for PvP opportunities. Get into 0-sec. Etc. Etc.

Why do people insist on mining when they're new? It's the lowest form of eve existence. It not like the many, many far superior alternatives for making ISK aren't available and well known eg: look for anomalies on your scanner and hunt for faction/deadspace items.

Before I even first started eve I read player blogs and guides on piracy, trading, indy, missions, exploration and much, much more.

When I got into game I set a goal, knew what I wanted to do and i've been playing ever since.

Man, here's what I've been doing.

I've been off and on EVE since it was in beta. I just don't like the game, but I love the game at the same time. It's weird. But, here recently I got an email with a 1day trial to buy a plex. So I did, and now I'm kinda enjoying it in a way I never have before.

What I'm doing is.... I'm not treating EVE like a game. I'm not really playing it, I'm treating it as a hobby or something to do on the side. I'm really enjoying it. If I feel like playing for a few hours, then I play for a few hours, if I don't feel like playing for a few days, I don't play for a few days. I'll be able to support myself on Plex for a at least a little while, but it's subscription isn't really all that much. And if I do get low on cash, I can always sell a plex or 2 then go rat 0.0 for a little while.

I'm actually almost half way through Cruisers 5 now. I have had Cruisers 4 for years, but could never deal with the 21day training time for 5, so I can get a HAC.

I used to wish i could stop getting attached to my ships, but I worked hard for them and love them. But when I lose them(as I do) I really hate the game, I hate player that destroyed it, i hate myself for my mistakes, and I have told myself manytimes i will quit. But i cant, I get drawn in again, it used to be for vengance, but now its just i love being in the other end of that stick too much.

For the OP Im not sure if this game is for you. But try Factional Warfare, it can provide some quick pvp without to much commitment.

Basically if you want to know about crafting in EVE is go to their site, cause everything and anything mission running, exploration, engineering and PvP is posted on their and their fan sites too. They have many set up guides for beginers and many ship set ups too. One important fact you need to understand the joining of a player corp will help you alleviate some of the boredom you will find at times.

This will stop once you buy and lose them in bulk.
When i go shopping, i usually buy in the range of half a dozen to a dozen ships with the same setup..

IMO it's all about the people you fly with. A medium size empire corp, with a lot of players that have just started up to around 2 mill skill points, can be alot of fun. You have to be willing to work together and put the tools in the sandbox to use. After that it's all imagination. This will usually get you to around 10 to 12 mil SP and the ability to hold your own in the more advanced area's of the game.

BTW I can't stand mining or missions and mining isn't even worth the effort, but level 4 missions can be handy when you fall on hard times.

In the beginning forget about trying to win anything and just focus on having a good time with other pilots and learning how to train a strong character. When your character is strong join up with a 0.0 group and put him to use.

Heh, what part of "being a new player" makes you think they'd know "well known" info without the game telling them? :P

Wikis have been surprisingly unhelpful so far.  I sifted through like 6 separate character creation guides (some of which seemed obsolete) and have come to the conclusion that out of those 6 multi-page guides the information could've been summed up in one line:

Race has no gameplay impact whatsoever.

But even after reading multiple guides I'm still unsure whether that's actually true or not.  They get so bogged down in meaningless lore when all I care about are the gameplay-related outputs. :X

But mostly I'm posting this to thank everyone for the info so far.  Going to try to "dive in" to things I suppose and see what results of it.

As others have said, try to get in a pvp corp and venture out with your new mates.

Race has a fairly minimal impact on gameplay. It affects a few very minor starting skills, which flavour noobship you get, where your NPC empire cloning stations are. And how your avatar looks.

    As for "well known"...

Pro-Tip™: Talk to people. Ask questions. A lot. Probably the smartest thing you've done so far is start this thread. It's a cliche to say that the most important skills in EvE are the ones that you dont spend SP on, but it's not less true for that. Make friends, make contacts, make your time.

if you want to pvp, try and get in a pvp training corp. Theres many out there and most great pvp corps have training corp. If you want to get into mining, mission running, manufacturing, anything. Find a corp through the recruitment forum on the eve forums, i wouldnt ask in the rookie channel or anything though for a corp..... sometimes those are scams or not very proffessional.
