Looking for a new MMO

darkgamerxdarkgamerx Member Posts: 311

Hey guys, i'm looking for a new MMORPG. One that has depth in terms of things to do besides from leveling up. Interesting crafting system (Like EQ2) to keep me busy! The game must have a big open world with limited zoning/instancing. My system can handle pretty much anything so suggest any game you think will meet my criteria whether it's 2D or 3D, I DONT MIND!. Also if it's a P2P game, i'll only choose to play it if it offers a trial.

Here's a list of games i've played/tried :

World of warcraft

Everquest 2

Anarchy online

Lord of the rings online

Matrix online

Ragnarok

Perfect world

Eve

Trickster online

Age of Conan

Conquer online

Knights online

Vanguard online

Star wars galaxies

Cabal online

City of Heroes/Villains

Everquest

Warhammer

Guild wars

KAL online

MU online

Priston Tale

Runescape

Silkroad

Talisman online

And others i can't quite remember right now! So help a mmorpg fan out here! Dying and starving for something interesting Help!!

    Bump for hope!

Sorry, the only game that I can think of that has EQ2 style crafting, with a big open world with limited zoning is a game already on your list. Vanguard. If you don't mind a less "hands on" crafting, I would suggest Fallen Earth.

I think you should give UO a shot, it looks pretty good with the KR server and it offers a free trial. There are essiently no levels per se, only skill levels and it doesn't take long to max them.

On most servers, due to the games age, most players are very mature and more than willing to lend a hand to a new player.

    Make it so...

It was interesting but heard that it's quite an empty world after the trial, i might give it another go i suppose!

    Thanks for the reply!

    Anymore suggestions people!

Sounds interesting, i once tried to give it a go on a free shard. Found it awfully confusing. Can you point out some of its features?

    Keep recommending games guys!

Sorry gentlemen! Just an innocent Bump!

Aion maybe, im not a big fan of it, but it looks similar to what your looking for. there are channels (thats what aion calls instances) but ive noticed that everyone pretty much sticks to channel one. No trial, but im sure there will be one soon enough. crafting is a total pain in the butt with the whole procing system (weapons and armor are randomly chosen to be good or not when you finish crafting them, and its extremely rare that it upgrades to the good version of it.) but it is similar to EQ2's crafting system.

LoTRO (although i havnt played it since expansion) was pretty similar too eq2 as well, i think there is a free trial on that. and i would definatly suggest trying that, very good game, a hybrid of WoW and EQ2 i guess.

pretty much all games are instancing to some point nowadays, or i would suggest trying Age of Conan too, crafting kinda sucks, but if you have a nice setup you can really take advantage of its awsome graphics and cool gameplay. if you try age of conan i would suggest checking system reqs anyway, just in case. (nvm on that, just noticed it was on your list)

I played Age of Conan half way through my free month but...i just lost hope and couldn't get myself to level. Found it really lacking in things to do. Either level or pvp/gank. Crafting was dull. It was fun for about a week then it just started dying out.

I've heard mixed things about Aion and i will check it out but i'm not going to throw my money at a mmo i've not yet tried.

LoTRO is interesting i suppose. i perhaps will give it a trial but i just can't get over the horrible character animations..the graphics and story is perfect, the only thing lacking is character animations and for some reason it really gets to me and im not usually fussy with visuals. I just find it weird that a game so polished in graphics is lacking in animation. Just a bit weird.

    Zi last bump!

Yeah, try it out again if you feel like it, i dont play it anymore, but i enjoyed it when i did. now that aion fell through ive been looking at a few possibilities of starting again, because i really dont want to play wow anymore, tried champions online too, which is fun, but i dont really see what goal im aiming for in the end, which irritates me because i like to know what endgame is going to be, if there is one.

good luck with UO too, i played it back when i first got the internet, and it was a blast, but i retried it and it disliked my 64 bit vista and confused the hell out of me, i think wow dumbed me down.

I have to completely disagree. The crafting is nothing like EQ2. In EQ2, you were actually active in your crafting, chose different materials for different stats, and chose which tools to use in advance, in order to try and counteract bad results. Aion you just click to make, and watch the Success and Failure bars, and hope like hell it is a success, with the only real determining factor being how high your skill is compared to the recipe. It is like WoW crafting, but with the chance to fail.

He also wanted an open world, with little instancing, and Aion is a very closed world, with massive instancing. It also has no trial... it sounds almost like the exact opposite of what the OP was asking for...

did i say it was exactally like EQ2's??? no. i said it was similar, when you compare other games to eq2 (except vanguard, because its crafting is probably the closest, but taht game is apparently empty whenever soe isnt doing a free reactivation weekend) most of them are exactally like WoW crafting. i think Aion is the closest thing we have seen to EQ2 style crafting in a very long time, since vanguard actually. If you have a better suggestion, then go for it.

*edit* and hell, if you can find a game thats open world, doesnt have alot of instanced dungeons, and has an involved crafting system, let me know, because i cant find it and ive probably played 75% of all of the p2p mmo's that have been released since the NGE in SWG.

Then you missed Vanguard. Open world, with in depth crafting. Fallen Earth is open world, with deep, but uninvolved crafting. It at least fits one of his wishes. Aion is neither. It is a closed world, very zoned, very instanced, very closed in, and does not have involved crafting. Other than Vanguard, I do not know of a perfect match ( although I have heard a lot about Ryzom... But I have not played it). However, you might as well have just suggested WoW if you are not going to match even one.

Hey guys its me again, just an update. Been playing Ultima online stygian abyss. Although it's an interesting game and to some extent it's quite enjoyable but it feels really dated. Because of this i don't think i'll get myself too into it. So please, if you would kindly, recommend more mmo's!.

Try DAOC if you like PvP as well as PvE. Crafting is ok, can be tedious but I hate crafting in any game. Hands down best pvp in any game, tons of classes, 3 realms to chose from, pve has an Epic quest line that starts at lvl 5 and continues every few levels. With this line you get a decent item with each step, then a decent end game starter set of gear. Alot more to do then that but thats a taste of it. Theres a trial as well.

Only 2 games I can think of that have interesting crafting systems that aren't in your list are Istaria and Ryzom.

Istaria offers 19 different crafting classes to be involved in, whether it be making weapons and armor, or building houses, making potions, cooking food, and etc.  There are also 28 different adventuring jobs you can be involved in if your a bi-ped.  You can also be a dragon, and fly once you get up to level 30 and do a series of quests.  Max level for a class is 100.  For crafting, once you get a school to 100, you typically can powerlevel others in that field alot easier off higher tier'd materials.

Ryzom offers well 4 base crafting classes, that branch out to specific pieces in time.  There is alot to the system, from looting monsters for materials, to digging them.  With so many different combos for making just one piece of armor, or a weapon, or jewelry, it can get complex.  There is also a decent combat system.  You are able to build your own moves and abilities to how you want to fight.  Max level for a class is 250, with well over 50 classes to branch out to.  Should keep ya busy for awhile.

Both games offer no instancing that I'm aware of.  Both worlds are huge, and are very pretty.  There are views in both games that have taken my breath away.

Both offer trials.  Istaria is a 14 day trial, and also offers a "demo" account which is a free account if you wish to just be a Human.  Ryzom offers a 21 day trial.

    Hope this helps you.

    Rustayne
