Can you explain to me what happened POST-CU? I never played the game, and I see the complaints thrown around about how great it use to be, but no one ever really speaks in detail about what exactly changed.
Although I'd love to give the whole breakdown on pre-CU, post-CU / pre-NGE, and post-NGE, I'm just not feeling in the mood to dive down that path in great detail. For me it has been over for quite some time. Hopefully this will suffice.
Basically:
Pre-CU- Sandbox world, open advancement, use skill to gain skill specific xp which led to gaining skill "boxes" see this old character builder. Essentially classless and the only difference between characters was the skill boxes they had chosen over time, the gear they wore, and the buffs they had on (No Levels). Every class could contribute and you could dabble in any combination of skills you wanted as long as you didn't use up your 250 skill points. If you did use up your skill points and decided you wanted to switch a couple skill boxes around, all you had to do was drop them on the UI and go level up the other skills you wanted to use. Your character was constantly evolving based on your playstyle at the time. You could be anything from a Bounty Hunter to Dancer to a Tailor or dabble in parts of all three. Everything was crafted by players, every resource was gathered by players, and to top it all off, there are these two great factions involved in a great war for pvp.
Post-CU- Game becomes level based and hybrid builds don't fit the proper mold to make "max level." There's a bunch of changes to the combat system, but I'm not going to go into them. Lots of good and bad things came in during the CU.
NGE - Game becomes Class *and* level based like every other mmo out there. Combat becomes a hybrid FPS / mmorpg (lock & autofire) mishmash. Classes have specific progression and whatever they call the alternate enhancement path now, think AA from EQ or talents in WoW. Choose a class, gain xp from mobs and quests, rinse, repeat, reach level 90, go pvp, instance run, and hunt for all the other added time sinks.
