Computer Help please =P

Here are the specs of my computer(word for word from dxdiag):

Genuine Intel(R) CPU 3.00GHz (2CPUs)

3456MB RAM

DirectX 9.0c

NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT with 1024MB RAM

My problem is that I find myself lagging a lot and all the time. Especially in the simplest of games such as Maplestory and ZU Online. If any of you play either game, in Maplestory, I lag a ton in the Free Market. And in ZU Online, I lag where there is a lot of people , and sometimes I lag a ton randomly. Now I thought, maybe my graphics card happens to be crappy, so I turned down the graphics on both games and nothing changed.

My video card driver is updated and I'm almost certain my internet isn't the problem. Any help is appreciated. =)

it could be the 8500 or cpu if it is not your internet

if your CPU is an Intel Pentium D, then that's likely the problem. Pentium D's are absolutely terrible.

What type of internet connection do you have? DSL, Cable, Dial-Up? Who's the provider? Wireless or wired?

How many background processes are running (open Task Manager and click on the Processes tab, check the Show Processes for All Users box). How many icons are in your system tray (usually in the bottom right-hand corner of your screen, next to the clock).

Background tasks will slow down performance (anti-virus and packet filters, software running in the background as well like AOL's software and ITunes).

    EDIT:

Also, are you supposed to have 4GB of RAM? But DxDiag is showing it as 3456MB?  This is a problem with 32-bit Operating Systems. They don't support more than ~3.5GB of RAM out of the box. You will either need to upgrade to a 64-bit version of your OS, or you'll need to enable PAE (which isn't nearly as good as just upgrading to 64-bit)

you ll need to scan for spyware, trojan etc this will take hours, then use spybot search and destroy, after defrag registery with cc cleaner  then defrag hard drive using your regular  defrag thingy  ,restart

it should have speeded up comp a lot ,make sure all driver are up to date.your problem is probably a trojan or virus so doing the step i suggested should be good enough.but then ms throttle down connection so much its annoying but you should see result

For one, that "paragraph" you just typed is atrocious.

Second, you sound like you have no clue what the hell you're talking about "defrag thingy" way to get technical buddy.

Third, "MS throttles connections so much it's annoying", WTF are you talking about?

I agree that baltazar's paragraph was outrageous....

But I'm not that stupid, I know enough about computers and probally a lot more than you do. I know that a huge problem could be a virus or a trojan. For one, I just reformatted my computer a couple days ago. Secondly, I run Symantec Anti-Virus at least every week, if not every day.

I doubt it's my graphics card, but it's possible. I honestly think the problem is my cpu.

I used Roadrunner and i'm wired, not wireless. Could my operating system not being 64bit be a problem in my lag?

Ick, Symantec is horrible, that's probably part of your problem right there. Symantec is a major resource hog.

Look into Avast! or AVG. Both are free and work better.

I've heard that Symantec is horrible. But my dad works for UNC Hospital and is the Network Security Manager, and they use Symantec and only Symantec. So I don't see how it can be that bad =/

I work for the Government and they only use Symantec and it KILLS my performance at work, dragging my computer to damn near unusable at time.

The reason the Government and so many corporations use it is that Symantec is a big company who got there foot in the door in the beginning and now is kind of stuck because it has always been that way.

Symantec's detection and intrusion protectoin is great, but it hogs your system.

It really is the most likely cause of your problem imo, try this

Better detection rate, uses almost no system....

Well I'm at work with my dad right now, fun right? =P So I can't really do anything, but I guess when I get home I will switch to WindowsXP 64-bit and switch anti-virus. I don't really like Spybot Search and Destroy, and don't you have to pay for the full version of AVG? I don't know anything about eset, so could you fill me in? I'd rather not try to research and find 2hours worth of random crap that I don't care about.

Well I uninstalled Symantec and put AVG on.(I'll probally download another AV too) The lag actually went away! For about 30seconds, then it went back to its normal self. =/
