This is amazing one of my favorite MMOs of all time is getting another chance. I'm pretty pumped up for this. It's not really an official press release but the CEO of SOE pretty much dropped the news on everyone. See below.
"To me, Planetside Next means we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in Planetside and make it a lot better," he wrote in a blog post noticed by PlanetSide-Universe. "Massive battles on a scale no other FPS will touch. None of this 64 player stuff. REALLY MASSIVE. With much better organization, and a tight focus on making sure the action is always going on, with awesome graphics." - john-smedley.livejournal.com/833.html
Go go Planetside fans! This just further proves the rumor that PS 2 was in the works, however is Planetside Next the official name of the new title?

Soooo... what is it? A sequel? An engine upgrade?
Well according to his blog it looks like it would be a brand new game (sequel).
Planetside's action + EVE's metagame + no instances = my dream game.
I really hope they do it right this time
About time that someone takes another shot at (essentially) the MMOFPS genre. Hopefully it'll be good this time around and grow the player base, which is sadly not very big at the moment.
This is precisely what I have been hoping for for years. I realize what the build probably won't have all this but what I'd like follows:
Something like Eve for interplanetary combat, trade, politics, then Planetside + Mechwarrior for everything on the surface. Captured bases on planets yielding real benefits, then links of bases yielding control of continents, then control of the continents giving planetary control with real benefits deriving from this effort.
I liked planetside, but not enough to pay over $10 bucks a month for. When the post combined sequel, Smedley, and SOE, along with the promise of sliced fried gold... I had the same wave of doubt I get everytime I see a spam mail ad for a single pill that will increase my I.Q., genital size, and/or bank account.
"we get a chance to take the essence of everything that was fun in Planetside and make it a lot better" Couldn't they have done that with PS1... ya know, reinvent the wheel like they did with "Shadows of Luclin", revamp graphics ect?
Sounds like they should rename the IP to Planetside: Profiteers.
Well hopefully it's all they say it'll be, that'd be nice for a change.
"There is only one thing of which I am certain, and that's nothing is certain."
Planetside Next was confirmed to only be an internal working title for the project.
That said, even though I trust SOE about as much as I trust my dog to learn how to speak English, I can not possibly turn down a Planetside sequel. I don't even care if it's bad. Planetside is STILL the only TRUE MMOFPS out there. All these other shooter MMOs are basically instanced "matches" with virtual lobbies instead of a server browser. Planetside 2 is obviously keeping the old Planetside formula where it truly is an MMO. The only seperation of the world is the space between entire planets.
I'll definitely be going NC again because they were usually the under dogs on quite a few servers.
I'm finally starting to vaguely enjoy EVE, but I don't want any of these mechanics mucking up my Planetside 2.
Planetside was a success by focusing on epic warfare. Worrying about crafting/farming replacement gear (as in EVE), or death having effects beyond a mere respawn time, or player-factions screwing up a solid 2- or 3-faction system would all screw up what made PS work.

Yea not having to craft and farm was a huge plus for me, in fact it's one of the reasons I loved Planetside. It was an on going world without the tedious rpg grinds that are connected to them. I loved how Planetside was a game that you could jump into and get right to the action if you wanted, all while there was an on going war.
I agree. Some things you can't mix. Like ice cream and ketchup.

This game was under SOE, survived it's wicked curse, and it's cynaide, and is coming back with a real sequel. Cheer's+!
I'll preorder that suck'a now if I was given the chance.
Played - M59, EQOA, EQ, EQ2, PS, SWG[Favorite], DAoC, UO, RS, MXO, CoH/CoV, TR, FFXI, FoM, WoW, Eve, Rift, SWTOR, TSW.
Playing - PS2, AoW, GW2

I completely agree.
Oh hello I'm new.
I love fps games so I would definetly have to give a Planetside sequel a chance even though I never played the first game. I just hope they are ale to get the right feel for the fps controls. The way the movements feel and the way the guns fire and perform are some of the biggest things I look for. The best games I think that have gotten the feel right have been the Halo games, the Call of Duty games, and the games Valve makes. I cannot even stand the way some games such Unreal Tournament play, because it is just to spastic with everyone spaming weapons all over the place.
SOE is on scramble to recreate its Flagship MMOFPS with Global Agenda nipping at their heels... Of course,I am voting for Global Agenda.

I'm quite skeptical about anything SOE is wanting to release in the future, because you know it'll be heavy with RMT/cash shops. As long as Smed is at the helm, I don't see it stopping. It's too bad, because I like EQ1.

GA is not a game about massive warfare, so I'm not sure you can say they're competing with one another.

Oh its not? Allow me to quote "Being Developed by Hi-Rez Studios, Global Agenda is an MMO shooter based in a 22nd century world where player created factions struggle against each other for power. Simultaneously, they fight in opposition to a totalitarian world government bent on domination. Built on the popular and durable Unreal 3 Engine, Global Agenda promises fast-action PvP, a dynamic, player-driven world, strategy elements, robots and more!"
and there you go.

Uh, where does it say anything about massive warfare? Did you even read it? Global Agenda is about 12 vs 12 battles.

I think the real question should be do I really care what it is - Planetside Next is still a Smedley's pipe dream while Global Agenda is coming out very shortly. The current Planetside at onetime had a great following but that was years ago ( I am glad to see that you still enjoy it). This sequel as I mentioned in my recent report is a sequel for a largely ignored game, not by the players but by the creator and developer...SOE.

Global Agenda I will not touch, or think about touching. It gains me little over all my free to play online FPS games I already own, and to top it off it doesn't sound that interesting.
Planetside 2 is something I would definetly consider playing, depending on how close it was to the original (and by original I mean the beginning of the original before the stupid underground tunnels and all that brought with it)
Obviously I'd want the game to be more advanced then planetside in gameplay but I would want to core mechanics to be very similar.

You were the one inferring we should care, by insinuating SOE was "scrambling" to get PS2 out in reaction to GA.
When in fact, the two games are not only significantly different in game design but (as you point out) being released in significantly different timeframes.
Companies don't "scramble" in reaction to games which are totally unrelated.

A new Planetside? SoE finally taking the game seriously again? No more Chinese global chat spam?
It almost makes me want to figrive them for all their horrible sins aginst this industry...
...almost. It will probably install SecuROM on your computer.
The History of the Order of The Golden Shields
As excited as I am for a new Planetside I'll be cautiously optimistic about it. Planetside was one of the best MMO experiences I've had, and would love to see that come back. It was the first FPS I could justify paying a monthly fee for because it had a persistent, dynamic world, with the option to participate in large battles that you couldn't get in a typical shooter.
On the other hand SOE doesn't have a great reputation. So I'll remain excited but I'll be picking SOE's decisions apart when it comes down to it, and remaining humble without putting full faith into them. They have a lot to prove to Planetside fans.
/yoda Faith in your new Sequel misplaced may be, as for your faith in the Reliant Side of SOE .
