Yikes now crappy updates affecting consoles?

From the following article:
"Thousands of Sony PlayStation 3 ('PS3') video game owners who downloaded a system update required by Sony found that the update caused their PS3 units to malfunction and actually damaged the hardware on many units," read the claim, via Ars. "For owners who sustained hardware damage from the Sony-required update, Sony is charging a $150 repair fee per unit. Sony, responding to the numerous complaints about the unacceptable effects of the defective update, released a further, optional update that it claimed 'improves system stability'—yet performance problems continued, and the new update did nothing to remedy the systems of users who sustained hardware damage."
Wow, if this is true, I guess PS3 owners now know what it's like to download "updates" from Sony, just like SWG vets. Oi vey. Until now, I thought consoles would be safe from the kind of b.s. gamers have had to contend with re. unwanted updates that makes things stop working. I guess that's no longer the case.
Makes me really glad my PS2 is still working, and that I don't receive any updates online.
P.S. I see this was moved, and I agree that this is a more appropriate forum.

Shenanigans! What a scheme. Break your PS3 with their defective update then charge $150.00 to fix it. I wish I thought of that.
An update from Sony = impending doom , open at your own risk.

So I call back, wait another 15 minutes on hold, and finally get another girl, I ask to talk to a supervisor, wait another 10 minutes on hold, and I complained to the supervisor. She has me turn off the system and hold the stand by button for so long until this "safe mode" menu came up, she had me click on system restore and just like that problem solved! Those motherfuckers were gonna charge me $150 to do something that took me 2 minutes to do at home. How fucked up is that???" ENDquote

On one hand, this really has me question (again) Sony's priorities. Their first response seems to be, "sure we'll fix what we broke, but it's gonna cost you big time." That's just nuts imo.
On the other hand, this may be good news for anyone affected by the update. Perhaps it can be repaired via a system restore. The only thing I wonder about here are the allegations of damage to hardware. If it truly is all a software issue, that would be good news for many I'm sure.

Thats funny. Just bought a PS3 slim and d/loaded the required updates and have had no problems what so ever.
Are you sure you plugged it in? Have it on the internet? Activate the Remote Retroll?
