Funcom just announced new "incentives" for subbing up for AoC. The three month incentive?

Subscribing for 3 months also guarantees a spot in open beta for The Secret World

Sorry, but as much as I want that, it's still not worth subbing to AoC...

Bans a perma, but so are sigs in necro posts.

Ofcourse they will.  The same people that actually buy lifetime memberships to mmorpgs.

I'm looking forward to this game, but I think I'll save my money and just register an account for the open beta instead of paying for AoC to get into said open beta.

Now perhaps if it were for Closed Beta stage 1 or 2............

Funcom will never do an open beta as it would shoot them in the foot of getting suckers to buy the game upon initial release..

Open beta doesn´t mean it´s open for everyone. All it means is that the NDA has been lifted.

All statements I make is from my point of view unless stated otherwise.

Funcom never lifts the NDA on any game. What they call open will be closed. The NDA on ao is still active.

Bought a lifetime sub to LOTRO and don't regret it one bit.

I have been essentially playing free for nearly a year now.

Remind me again how that's a bad thing for an MMO someone enjoys?

    OT:

I saw that and thought it was a cheap attempt by Funcom to get people to sub to AoC knowing the anticipation that is surrounding TSW.  As much as I am looking forward to TSW, I will not buy and sub to another game simply for a beta spot.

It's Funcom's attempt to pad the sub numbers for the next few quarterly reports. Think about it, if you sub 3,6, or 12 months to get in the TSW beta but stop playing AoC because you either get tired of it or realize it sucks mammoth balls, FC still gets to use your remaining subbed time as proof of "active subscriber numbers".

Me thinks its the first step to a "funcom pass". One sub many games; something like sony has.

They now have AO, and AoC. Pets vs Monsters coming first half -10 and 2012(?) TSW. Starting to spell a "one subscription, 4 games" kinda thing

Because it's essentially a gamble. Generally, a lifetime sub is $200 up front, and just to break even on the deal, you pretty much need to be actively playing every month for about 14 months. In a year, an MMO can go from opening, to folding, from great, to complete crap from the changes they've made. Would you have felt so awesome about a lifetime sub to Warhammer Online? Don't think so. This is assuming you don't get sick of the game by that point. I personally can't think of an MMO that's been good enough for me to stay with for more than 2 months in almost a decade.

So yes, sometimes you get lucky, but ultimately, lifetime subs are a fools game.

That would be a good deal in my opinion, for several reasons.

    1. I liked Anarchy Online and I am interested to see what they do with the engine upgrade.

    2. Age of Conan is a perfectly serviceable and good game. It certainly has its fair share of issues, but overall, I have enjoyed my sub time, although I recently unsubbed again because of  a lack of actual available play time.

    3. I am very interested in TSW; I've been hoping for a survival-horror type MMORPG in the Lovecraft tradition.

So in my opinion, one sub fee to cover all three games in the $24 range would be acceptable, particularly if it supports continued development, updates, and expansions.

Aww look at all the cute little babbys who don't know anything about AoCs current state.

-Computer specs no one cares about: check.

-MMOs played no one cares about: check.

-Xfire stats no one cares about: check.

-Signature no one cares about: check.

    ------------------------------------------------------------
    -Narcissism: check.

Whats really tricky is that when think about it, a promise of access to closed beta, doesn't guarantee what you think it does. For example, they start closed beta on a given day. a week later they let in the AoC sub people in for one day only. That would be covered under what they're offering.

Basically they're counting on the ideas people have about what they THINK funcom is offering doing the selling for them.

Now I'm not saying FC is going to do that, but the bottom line is that people who are buying the sub for the beta really have no idea what FC is going to do.

MMOG developers need to stop using beta access as a marketing tool and use it for what it was meant for... if they want to give people free trials right off the bat then great, do that, but beta testing should be about testing the game for server stability and squashing bugs. I know, don't even say it...

I am not going to bite on the beta access if you sub to AOC for 3 months.

Look at what cryptic did with champions and star trek,  they told everyone get the what ever the lenght was sub to champions and you will get star trek beta access, after the people got it they where basickly like we will get you in at some point thaks suckers.

Now if it said you will be the first ones in beta then I might drop the 3 month sub ( still would not play AOC) just to be the first one in.

I am betting that if you wait just like ever other game comming down the pike has offerd preorder and get beta access.

You are also taking a risk that TSW will come out before fail com folds up into bancrupticy.

I hope they have learned their lessons from their other two failures AOC over all failure and anarchy for the massive launch failure, I realy hope the third time is the charm for fail com as I am realy looking forward to this game.

Considering they made this move, I think they haven't learned at all. In fact I think they have made many of the same mistakes again.

1: Heavy emphasis on PvP, sorry, but AoC and Warhammer have proven that PvP isn't as big a pull as its fan claim it is. The biggest MMO's WoW and Lotro are PvE first.
2: LONG hype period, read the forums of TSW, people are adding stuff to the game that can never be produced and it has been going on a long time. No game can live up to that hype.
3: No clear dev plan. No definitive answers, lots of "we might do that" stuff. That just fuels speculation where you again, can never life up to.
4: Again with the 360. MS HATES MMO's and a console ain't a PC every year that passes makes the console more obsolete. It just fuels speculation and hype. Also don't underestimate how many PC players see console games as something for the retarded. You might as well market your game "An MMORPG for the intellectually challenged". Do you really want people to think you are going to play like FFXI (try it)

The Secret World MIGHT possibly be a breath of fresh air, but people also though Age of Conan might be just that. We have seen a lot of MMO's coming out and yet WoW, an ancient game is still the absolute king with nobody able to make a dent in their numbers.

The Secret World needs to be clear what it is going to be, who is going to want to play it, to avoid AoC mistake where it sold a lot of copies but sold it to people expecting a different type of game and then getting really pissed of at Funcom because of it.

This is really the last change for Funcom and it don't help them to link TSW, their last hope, with the mistakes they made so far.
