I took the plunge and gave in. I bought my copy of darkfall about 10 minutes ago and am currently downloading the client. I'm very excited about trying this out and thought it would never happen because I was so frustrated when it originally released that I told myself I wasn't going to even bother. Lately I have been feeling like playing something very different than the norm and I hope this grabs my attention like an anaconda death grip around it's prey.
Can anyone please give me any points for starting out? What race / class would you suggest...I looked at them and though the humans or dwarfs looked the coolest and thought I would play either of those. Does picking human or dwarf limit me to only being able to group or "play" with that race or am I able to group and play with anyone I want?
Anyone have a suggestion for a guild to join as a newbie on the US servers?
Wish me luck...I'm hoping that this becomes my favorite game but I don't want to build it up too much in my head to something it will never live up to but it looks like a blast...see you guys in game.

Between current stat stuff and things coming out with the next expansion there will be some differences with races that may matter to you or not depending on how much a slight edge matters to you. As things are, dex is the hardest stat to raise and mirdain have a higher starting value. They also are supposed to get some advantages that may help with archery some. Orks are supposed to get a boost with greataxes(so if you wanted to use axes...) and they also start with highest strength and therefore highest hp. Alfar start with the most int and are supposed to get stuff related to magic. Mahirim have pretty balanced stats and are going to get SOME sort of transportation speed buff but we dont know if it is the "4-legged run" or a passive bonus or anything else for that matter. Humans are going to be getting some sort of nourishmentbonus(it helps recover things faster) and also have balanced stats. Dwarves are going to be getting some sort of crafting bonus.
All of that being said there are no limits for who you group with(there is the allignment system when it comes to killing but it isn't THAT controlling) and supposedly there is clan called "NEW" or something like that which is geared towards getting newbies started so that would be a good idea to join. The standard advice i keep hearing right now is to get a 2-handed weapon skill(get a bound weapon of this type), do the starting quest chain, and start training archery.
Hm...good stuff to think about. Thank you for the advice
No problem. Good luck and post about your initial experiences... reactions of people who were on the line rather than things said by fanboys are more important for this forum.
No matter what you do, consider writing about it and posting on DFONews.com
My guild and are are just starting over in Darkfall as well (Alfar) and are currently enjoying the game. Things can be rough at times... and starting out in Darkfall can be as far as games go extremely challenging, but if you can pace yourself it can pay off at the end.
If you like reading about other newbies and their adventures in DF check out TDK.
There are only minor differences between races. Some people say that mahirims and orcs are worst because of their huge size.
There are no strict classes - everybody can use anything. Currently the most popular "build" is guy in bone armor using fire magic and polearm. Next free expansion, coming out this month, will boost melee, archery, heavy armor and nerf magic.
There is no skillcap - so you can try to do everything, and decide what you want to do later.
Good luck.
Bank often.

Really? So I can level every skill up to max? Like in UO there was a max number of pionts that you could acumulate...i think ~700 ish and then you would have to turn that skill down and another up if you wanted to do something else so that you just fluctuate between what you want to do by working them up and down. So if I understand what you are saying then I can skill everything up to max yes? Pretty sweet if you ask me.

The expansion may be adding some specialty stuff that is mutually exclusive (like anti magic archery stuff that caps certain magic you can use) but as things are you have have every skill in the game max... but i wouldnt advise grinding anything near that long.
edit: Also keep in mind that this means older players will not only be stronger than you... they will be stronger than you in pretty much every way possible. You will have a tough time fighting anyone at the start so as pyro said... bank often(once you think you've found often bank about twice as often as that)
Yeah as someone starting out, banks are your friends. Its best to find a hunting spot near a bank, and hunt the hell out of it, and literally banking every 20 minutes or even more isnt a bad idea.
Get yourself a nest egg, and slowly start working your magic schools.
If you are playing on NA, and need some help feel free to send Phaine TDK a tell, if u are alfar I can help show you the ropes.
Awesome, I may send you a message. Do you have ventrilo that you guys use? Thanks for all your guys' help. It's good to start off and not be completely lost but have a general direction of things to do.
Yes.
You can do it, but it will take very long time, and you can't use everything at once anyway:
- It's very difficult to cast spells in any heavy armor.
- Mage-killer specialization will give you serious advantages against mages, but you won't be able to use high level magic yourself
- Cost of raising enchanting to max level is about 2.5 mln gold. For that kind of money you could buy/conquer cities for 25 large clans.
- Large clan needs to farm for 2 weeks to raise one guy shipbuilding skill to 25
So you can freely experiment, or change your mind and raise different skills.
But you won't really need more than 20 skills raised to high level to be effective in combat. After one month of grinding skills on mobs you'll win or lose in PvP not because of your character skills, but because of superior player skills or superior tactics.
Ok so i just finally finished the installation. Are the servers down for maintenance now?
You can check servers state using following links:
North American server: www.us1.darkfallonline.com/news/
European server: www.eu1.darkfallonline.com/news/
Ah...I think it's a patch or something because it's not letting me create a character so I guess i'll let it run over night and just see how it's going in the morning.
yeah when you start the app, at the very top of the box is the update progress, you will see it say something about validating, at that point just leave it. Sometimes if you go to server screen it stops patching.
As for my group yeah we have vent, just shoot me a tell in game when you are on and we can go from there.

Newborn On Agon
Clan made especially for new players. NEW is a clan supported by most of the powerfull clans on the server. The main goal of NEW is to teach new players how to get used to the game, they sometime give free equips, etc for your personal uses and NEW holds one of the best Hamlet (Clan Castle) location (Hammerdale). Hammerdale is one of the best spawn to learn Crafting skills (Mining, Lumbering, Herb Gathering).
Aside from that, good tip is to complete most Starter Quest as they do help you learn the game.
NEW is pretty cool. They have no affiliation or alliances other than the protection of Black Shield, one of the more powerful mercenary clans. My in game name is Ghost Chant. Let me know if you have any questions.
Responding to the posts about having a hard time fighting heavily skilled players here:
Another thing to note that is happening in the expansion regarding new players and their viability.
Currently, people who have multiple high-level magic schools can "cycle spells". Some strong AoE spells and nukes have a cooldown. But if you have maxed Fire, and Air, and Earth magic for example. You can cast a fire nuke, then an air nuke, then an earth nuke. This is what allows people with many high level magic schools to be almost superior, and what made magic so unbalanced. In the upcoming expansion, they will be adding some form of global cooldown. So you use an AoE, and all your similar rank AoE spells will be on cooldown (so you will no longer be able to cast a lv.100 fire nuke, then a lv.100 Air nuke, right after eachother due to this cooldown).
This, combined with the melee and archery improvements, and Mage-Killer class. - All of this will decrease the superiorness (if thats a word) of characters with many maxed schools. Sure, it helps having maxed schools because different things will be weak to different elements of magic etc. But it will no longer mean you can cycle and just nuke, nuke, nuke, nuke because of it.
It seems there's going to be quite a few changes to the way skills work, which will also result in new players becoming viable for PvP alot quicker.
Not to mention that just a while back, skill gains (not crafting skills though, fighting skills) were doubled. On top of this, tripled when you are fighting a mob. - So now hitting a player would be double skill speed compared to before this change. Whilst hitting a mob is now 6x skill speed compared to before this change.
According to players in the forums, it takes a around two months of very casual play (2-4 hours a day) to have a nicely skilled character for PvP.
I haven't played Darkfall since July , mainly due to being busy at the momant. But I've been watching the official news and updates on their official forums like a hawk, lol.
Definately re-subbing for this expansion, I'm totally stoked.
Tips I can give you are: I know it's been said already, but bank often. Honestly. Don't do what I did on my first day, happily slaughtering mobs, really pleased with all the reagents and loot in your bag after about an hour, then get ganked.
Also, just to give you a general direction on what magic to be using and skilling in your first steps - some essential spells (all in the "lesser magic" school) you will need, no matter what "class" you choose to play are:
Heal Self - Self explanitory. You start with it right from the beginning, use it when ya need to and get it skilled up.
Mana to Stamina - Converts some of your mana into Stamina (which is used to do pretty much everything, attacking, sprinting etc. Run out of Stamina, you're dead).
Stamina to Health - Self explanitory. comes in real handy.
Launch - Used to launch your character to get on walls, in trees, etc.
All of these are in Lesser Magic (best way to get this up is Mana Missle, a low mana low damage attack that costs nothing to cast. And Heal Self, a low mana heal that costs nothing to cast)
These skills basically keep you on your feet through the entire game, and it will especially help if you know about them from day 1, I know it would've helped me.
Have fun!

Always hating on instances in MMOs! Open worlds, open PvP, territory control and housing please. More persistence, more fun.
The same here.. I'm downloading now. It will probably be Monday before I'll get to play it much <<whines>>
Any idea when the expansion is coming? I know I could check their website...but I'm lazy,
Any idea when the expansion is coming? I know I could check their website...but I'm lazy,
They said mid November, so I would expect them to be late a bit, perhaps 25th-30th Nov
My one hour in initial reactions:
I make my character...have a hard time thinking of a name so I name him Dwight Schrute...I love the office.
Load in...
Alright..im a lefty so I know right off the bat I have to change key bindings because I could never use WASD and all that jazz.
So I change everything and click "ok" or "close" i can't remember...i thought it would save the key binds but I found out that no...I had to actually click the apply button. This isn't a big deal at all...just have to go back and do it again so I spend another 10 minutes or so going back and making sure everything was changed and stayed that way.
I am having a tough time deciphering the meaning of some of the binds that are offered...they could have definitely made that part a bit more user friendly.
I walk into town while getting used to right clicking and left clicking and going in and out of the two different "phases" of controls i guess you could say.
I talk to a few NPC's after I turn my gamma up so I can see them...man it was dark. I check on each NPC where it says "Quest" and none are offered...maybe I went the wrong direction or missed something but there were no quests for me. Still...not a huge big deal but it would have been nice to find one to start working on.
After finally getting settled in and a little more comfortable with how to move and what not I line up spells and abilities on my hotbar...I'm not sure what some of them do but I figured the best way to find out is to get out there and use them.
I run out of town for about 30 seconds and come across my first little goblin establishment...the funny thing is I didn't even notice them until I saw an arrow fly by me. I turn around and go for the gobby that is attacking me and go up to him but my sword wasn't swinging...I kept hitting different buttons hoping to find the one that swings my sword...or dagger...not sure what it is. I almost died and still hadn't figured out how to swing my sword so I ran back to the town.
I stayed in town for a couple of minutes while I figured out how to swing my sword. I go out and and head back to the goblins...to my surprise they have a pretty large aggro radius and I ended up with 3 on me and I killed 2 of them but the third one got me.
I died...im not one to give up so I ran back and wanted to loot those tombstones and I loot the first one I come to when all of a sudden im getting attacked again by 3 more goblins...damn...give me some breathing room.
I killed one of them but died to the other two because I haven't yet figured out how to use my magic spells. The heal self or the missiles thing...I keep pressing the button on my hot bar but it isn't doing anything...I swear that I thought that I might have bound them correctly. Maybe I'm missing something...but my spells dont work so I died again.
This was my first hour in Darkfall...
First impressions...it seems like it could definitely be fun but it takes some "work" so to speak from the user to figure out the UI and key bindings. Doing magic isn't very intuitive nor was swinging your sword...nothing spending a little time working with the UI and keybindings couldn't help but all in all I think it should be a little more user friendly.
The mobs didn't seem too hard or too easy in the starting areas...just about right if you ask me.
The quests...well I can't comment on them other than to say I couldn't find any. You would think in a starter city / zone / whatever you want to call it that there would be some or there would be some that were easier to find.
Movement seemed ok...a little slow but thats pretty much a given because noone starts off with a mount or running faster in any other MMO so no complaints there.
I like what I see so far. As soon as I get my feet wet and get the key bindings figured out and how to use magic figured out I will probably enjoy the game a bit more. I plan on sticking it out at least for my free month and probably more considering the things I have heard about from the expansion...they sound like they will add a lot to the game.
It takes more than just putting items in your hotbar. It took me a bit to figure that out too. You put it in the hotbar, click the associated button to "load" it, then you need to arm yourself with the weapon before you can actually cast it.
So to cast mana missile from your default, neutral stance:
1. Select your staff in the hotbar or your bag
2. Draw your staff (arm yourself with it. R key)
3. Select the mana missile spell in your hotbar
4. Click the mouse button
If you've got your sword drawn already:
1. Select the staff in the hotbar
2. Select the mana missile spell in your hotbar
3. Click the mouse button
Drawing your weapon is what kept throwing me off. I'm so used to just pressing a number key and the spell goes off. In DFO, you need to have the right weapon and have it drawn in order to cast the spells. It's harder, for sure, but makes it more challenging. After a while it'll click and become second nature.
Current: None
Played: WoW, CoX, SWG, LotRO, EVE, AoC, VG, CO, Ryzom, DF, WAR
Tried: Lineage2, Dofus, EQ2, CoS, FE, UO, Wurm, Wakfu
Future: The Repopulation, ArcheAge, Black Desert, EQN
The keybinding stuff prob hit you harder because you are a lefty. The UI differences get most people but they actually feel pretty natural within the first week or so. I am curious about what caused you to "like what [you] see" considering you actually had a pretty crappy start compared to other people(i remember my first time getting on was crazy because server was like impossible to get into and it wasnt up to play for long.. i had a blast though-- killed and died fighting other noobs)
The Quest Giver in a Starter Town should be the counsilor. Usually he's very close to the bind stone. When you talk to him, click on the "Quest" tab and take the first mission (Kill 4 Goblins, Gather 3 Goblin Axe). After that, he will give you several quests that includes cutting timbers to repair the town, cutting more timber and mining ores, fishing and then cooking, herb gathering, skinning and that's it. For every quest, you will receive the necessary tools so you do not need to buy them.
Once you're done with these, put them in the bank with the gold you gained Next quest will be to kill 7 goblins within an hour. After, kill Skeletons, Zombies, visit the next town, kill Trolls and gather blood, kill centaurs and then Sadayel. Usually you should be able to kill up to trolls easily. If you want you can stop after that quest, you will have a decent amount of gold to buy what you want/need and after 2 more days of skill grinding (Get Lesser Magic to 50 at least so you can unlock Greater Magic). Once you have all that, you should be able to go outside and discover the world a bit and that's where the fun begins. But really, the first 5 days are terrible.
Also, join Clan NEW as I mentionned in an earlier post.
How to join a clan:
1: Enter Pause Mode (right click)
2:Click on the Clan Tab
3:Click On Menu
4:Clan List
5:Scroll down and click on the magnifier and type "NEW"
6: Click on the NEW clan in the list
7:Click Menu
8:Recruitment (Apply)

This guild will greatly help you and we sometimes have a few event or contest going on. For exemple, the Clan Brotherhood Of The Spiders ran a little event for us, gave us a great bunch of stuff including an armor, weapon and mount. Then we headed to the sea and got on a Ship where we were soon raided by a small group of "pirates". It's fun
