TERA vs AION

DiSpLiFFDiSpLiFF Member UncommonPosts: 602

I wanted to make this thread because I think it's obvious this game will break into the Aion market here and in korea. I actually liked Lineage 2 i played it for almost 2 years it was my first mmo. I played Aion for just under 2 months and didn't like it at all.

I really don't know A LOT about TERA but what attracts me is

1) The open world

2) FFA

3) Lots of classes to choose from

4) The combat system looks like it is thinking outside the box

5) no stupid flying ruining combat mechanics (lol just had to throw that in there)

6) People might disagree, but it will be nice to play a korean mmo that isn't done by NCsoft, i dunno their track record (in my eyes anyways) has been a huge list of terrible customer service. It would be nice to see how a new company handles it.

Anyways what everyones thoughts of TERA vs AION

    Boobs vs Schoolgirls.

seriously, the aion world felt constricted, closed in. if tera's isnt then thats a point in its favour.

If you stand VERY still, and close your eyes, after a minute you can actually FEEL the universe revolving around PvP.

Yep, that alone would almost be enough reason to favour tera over aion.

I'm sticking with Aion right now, the world  design is changing with 3.0 it will be very open, and most of the bounderies will be removed, and free form flight will be in. Yay.

We barely know ANYTHING about T.E.R.A and so far in all of the trailers the characters all look the same for each class/race/whatever, and we don't know how open and non-restrictive the world really is, even if it doesn't look like it in the videos.

TERA doesn't use the same combat system as AION so I think it's safe to say comparing the two is pretty close to comparing apples and oranges as far as two mmos go.

Not to mention TERA has a good year or two on AION by the time it finally hits the US retail.

Id say if you want to compare TERA, compare it to Blade & Soul and Continent of the Ninth (C9)

The problem for me is i cannot take PVP seriously in a RPG,it is just too weak and NEVER thought out to be skillful or constructive.

For myself UT99 is the ultimate PVP,because it covers EVERYTHING possible to make it so.

Map design, map control, map positioning all huge factors, this  alone is totally left out of RPG's ,so that sets them on the path of fail right out of the gate.

I like the fact that a PVP game like UT99 offers the armour that players try to get to for that added defense,it creates that MAP control or map movement aspect. Then again map design allows for Z-Axis fighting, something Aion tries to mimmick by use of flying ,but since the maps are not designed to make it skillful both in offense and defense it is a fail. You need all the ranged weapons longrange/mid range/melee then you need that ONE aspect to allow you the chance to kill a fully armoured player [the infamous BIO gun].Sure it is a slow weapon and low accuracy but in the hands of a skilled player can be deadly ,it offers more choice to a skillful game.

Where RPG's fail is they actually think they can create weapons/abilities/spells to operate the same in a PVE environment the same as they can in a PVP set up,there is no way,it is a totally different game. There is imo literally zero thought put into PVP in our RPG's ,it was only something they started to cater more to try and get more subscriptions.

RPG's have heal pots and to make it even more watered down ,most games have players using ADD-ONS that auto pot for them ,it really makes PVP a joke .Then in a REAL PVP game like UT 99 you have to actually move to the heal pots and they need to be spawned and fought for by the players, they are not permanently there, the way heal pots are unlimited use and of course your heal pots follow you where ever you go in RPG's lmao, not too skillful at all.

lol so we don't know anything about TERA from a few videos, but 1 video about "aion 3.0" and we know everything? right... i understand your logic.

on a side note if you don't think Aion and TERA are going to go head to head for subscriber base...

Actually the few things he mentioned, open world, bounderies removed and freeform flight, are all major things that were a part of the main "focus" of the trailer. Which means that they will probably be static, with none or little change. I doesnt see any problem with his logic in this matter.

tera on the other hand is at a beta phase and what we know about it is restricted and may for all we know change suddenly. What we know is also what the developers want us to know, its totally in their control to what the players will see both from a viewers standpoint and a player(beta).

Im not favouring anyother game over the other as of yet, but the logic used by Valentina is understandable. (Atleast thats what i think now at 07:00 am, need coffee)

Btw, i hate <insert game> vs <insert game> threads ^^. People always end up getting "offended" in some way.

When that stuff is in Aion then talk about it but as of right now the trailer is just hype bait to hold on to the few subs that the game still has.  LMAO

YOU barely know ANYTHING about Tera. If you want info on Tera look it up. Its plenty of stuff out there describing the game. You can start at TeraSource.com and there is a beta review at MMOSite.com

I think it's funny how Valentina claims that we know nothing about the game because "there's only trailers" and then says he's sticking to Aion because of a trailer. Hypocrisy anyone?

As I've personally tried the game I can tell you that it's absolutely amazing and I'm extremely excited to see what it's going to be like at the launch. I'm however bound by a non-disclosure agreement so I can't say anymore than that.

TERA is a second little sister ... with big brother AION - of mother Lineage  and father Diablo  :-]

Blue Hole Studio's TERA, from what I can tell in the youtube footage of the boss fight, is that the game may play more like Hellgate... meaning it's not a point-n-click/auto lock gameplay mechanics, and seems to advocate to aiming your cursor in the direction of your target(s).  Which is a gameplay style I prefer.  Right now I stopped playing AION and have a 30, and 2 level 20 toons.  The reason I stopped was for the same reason I stopped playing AoC... basically got bored of the point-n-click on enemy game mechanics.  I hope, like in Hellgate, that TERA will allow players to use environemental backgrounds to dodge/duck behind walls, corners, etc, to avoid being hit by projectiles (magic or otherwise).

It seems that Hellgate has spoiled me into a more free aiming vs. point-n-click gameplay mechanics when it comes to mmo's.

    Hi, new here.

I haven't played Aion, and I can't say much, but I can tell you this, the combat isn't that bad (You can't go through characters and your dodging most of the time.

I was very disappointed that my computer couldn't keep up with the game sadly. (Those Koreans have mad computers)

I also wouldn't call their combat system out of the box, it is the actual combat that should have been in MMOs since the dawn of time, someone really screwed up replacing it with the wow type gameplay in which you stay still and have about 27 skills to choose from...

I am guessing it is going to be better than Aion from what I have seen in their videos.

  • AevenathAevenath Member UncommonPosts: 116

TERA actually doesn't suck, Aion does. :)

I can't wait for TERA and Blade & Soul. The combat in both games looks amazing.

I agree, at least until Aion Vision 2010, Tera is far ahead in every aspect.

Aion Vision 2010 will be almost comparable to Tera. Maybe not as good but it's Ncsoft's way of saying F U to all their competitors.

So now its gone from Aion 3.0 to Aion Vision 2010 still with only a statement from NC Soft saying the trailer shows some things that may be put in Aion sometime in the future.

NCwest knows nothing. The title Aion 3.0 was actually from playncus which is incorrect, it's Vision 2010. I had a link put up that gives up info in one of my threads and no, Aion developers have been working on this for a good while, even before Aion was released in NA. They said so during interviews and on thisisgame that the trailer was all in-game footage in developer servers.

  • Krn_AssassinKrn_Assassin Member Posts: 581

^but I still think Tera will be slightly better in every aspect of Aion's Vision and far better than the current Aion.

  • MikehaMikeha Member EpicPosts: 9,196

Tera is going to be everything that Aion should have been. I have gone the Aion route and I wont be going back. They had there chance to release a quality MMO and they failed. Fool me once and thats it.

Thing is, NC has more backing and experience then Blue Hole Studios and will likely release their expansion here first (their updates will be global now) before Tera gets here. I think people will be stuck playing Aion's new expansion rather then Tera. I'll be playing both.

Umm apparently you do not realize who Bluehole is?These are the guys that pretty mcuh made up the LINEAGE A team. These are the gusy that put NCSOFT on the map,so i am sorry these guys have more going for them than what NCSOFT now has in place.

Plus ,talking about quality,NCSOFT has taken the opposite direction.Since their huge loss on TR they have taken a much cheaper approach Aion was like a 40 million dollar game and TR was 60,even so 40 is nothing by nowadays standards ,especially for a large operation that always carries higher expenses.

IMO to be fair,i do not expect a heck of a lot more from Bluehole,Korean games have not changed one bit, they are so set in thir ways it will be many more years before we see a KOREAN game that does not look and play like one.

However no question TERA will look better and is using higher end tech, they are also trying to spruce up combat at least a tad better than the normal.Since Aion offer literally nothing than hopes of speed leveling to end game PVP,TERA cannot fail for game play any worse,it can only be equal or better, time will tell if is better or not.

People are done with Aion. I am sure you have noticed all the negative threads since the game released. Everybody will be playing games like Guild Wars 2, Final Fantasy XIV, Star Wars, Tera, Blade & Soul, Mabingi Heroes, C9 and Cataclysm. Nobody cares about Aion anymore regardless of what they do.

TR was a failed game made by Richard Garriot. Glad Ncsoft dropped him on his head.

Either way Ncsoft made a killing from Aion and it's other games Guild Wars and City of Heroes. Ncsoft has so many MMO titles under their belt that have made more money then Funcom and Mythic combined it's not even funny.

Tera has a tad better combat than normal? You sure like to make it sound less interesting then it is. It is basically on a whole other level than the combat we see in MMOs today my friend. I'm sure you know that too.

About Tera being better than Aion, yea i agree with you but Aion still has a good following here in America that won't make the switch-over to a new game, especially when NC will likely release their expansion first.

No one is done with Aion if they continue to pay their subscription fees.

Threads and forums usually have whiners that aren't playing anything and want to release their hate somewhere so yea it's obvious you won't see happy threads about Aion, cause the people that like it are actually playing the game.

Star Wars will be out 2011 and it lost it's hype when people realized it's nothing special. It can be played like a single player from beginning to end.

GW2 won't be out before Aion's expansion, since NC won't probably won't let it. B&S, Mabinogi Heroes, C9 I agree they will make a ton of money here in America. Cat I don't know, I think people realized how crappy Blizzard is being and won't go through with their bs any longer.

Tera will meet the same complaints and negativity that Aion has in the west for one reason alone. The average person does not want to mainly kill one set of mobs for hours on end to level.
