So much anger. So much hate. All I tried to do, was giving out a few advices. But then, go ahead, act like children; refuse to see the fact I pointed out, then do the opposite. Am I wrong when I say that this project is obviously more like a protest against that MMO's have become solo friendly rather than you trying to find back to the good old days...? If so, it is quite a paradox then, considering MMO's became solo friendly mainly due to 'groupers behavior'.
With all due respect, you haven't pointed out any facts. You are mistaken that this is some sort of 'protest' against MMOs. The OP created an avenue for like-minded players to join together, with a specific playstyle in mind, before trying to find these people randomly in game. And it caught on.
Secondly, that last sentence is your opinion, again not any facts, and therefore there is no paradox. MMOs have become solo friendly because the target audience, who were never native mmorpg players, but action game players, became the focus of the business of mmo development. Games today are made better no doubt, but they gutted the core of what these games used to be about to make room for higher sales. That is my opinion, which is different than yours obviously.
This group to me represents nothing but a friendly, voluntary gesture to what these games used to be about. And it is being created in this fashion because game designers have neglected adding these sorts of tools in their games, which forces us to do it ourselves. Nothing more. No protest, no experiment and no rose-coloured glasses about the past. It is easier to do this, than join a game and experient with guilds, and all the frustration that may provide.
And obviously we are considering game aspects, that is why there is a vote with a focus on trials. Most people have voted.
Woah, woah-woah-woah... So much to catch up to. I'll try to be brief.
First of all, really, ignore chrisel, he's been nothing but trouble in all the threads, I've seen him in.
Secondly, about the questgrinding part and catching-up. Aside from EvE and Ryzom (which don't need them) and, possibly, EQ (which I don't know THAT much about) all games on our voting list have mentoring options, which allow players of all levels... Well, play together.
I'm a bit pro-EQII in some regards - it was my first MMORPG, after all. However, I do acknowledge it's main problem - the questing. With that said, questing in a group in that game was quite fun. People grabbed as many, as they could for the zone, had a checklist and just wandered from spawnspot to spawnspot, while socialising. At least, that's how it was, back when I played on the official Russian server.
Even better, there are a lot of either open-world "hotzones" or non-instanced (but acting as a separate zones) dungeons, which had some quests, but were more worth doing to get extra experience and AA from the named mobs and discovering new zones.
A lot of people, actually, helped those who were left behind to do the needed quests, since, usually, the last part was the hardest and thus the one most worth doing.
Don't forget Heritage quests, which, again, allowed to do early steps rather quickly, while still being challenging in the last parts. It's all how we do our "mind-set", people should be more... Well, helping, to their comrades and expect the same in return.
With that said, there is always an alternative, when someone's away. Doing non-combat thing - crafting, housing, the like. That's where FFXI , EQII and VG (don't know about the others, to be honest) truly shine - a lot of more "fluff" things to do.
One more "pro" for EQII (which it might share with VG, if I'm not mistaken) - guild levelling. Which is acquired trough status, providing opportunity to grind repeatable status quests together. Mindless, but with a purpose other, than personal gain.
I'm rather interested in all games in the "top-5+1", except for, maybe, EvE, but willing to give it a try.
Now, as for the name. I like "Pro Bono Publico", but might I suggest something among the lines of "The Road/Path Ahead"?
I hate WoW because it made my plush hamster kill himself, created twin clones of Hitler, punched Superboy Prime in reality, stared my dog down, spoiled my grandmother, assimilated me into the Borg, then made me into a real boy, just to make me a woman again.
Exactly when is a game going to be chosen? Is there any timeframe, like today or tomorrow? Or somwhere down the road.
I'm opening our forums today, once we decide on the name. There, we will discuss and maybe vote on the chosen games, while people trial them. I doubt the decision will take longer, than next weekends - a lot of trials can be explored in a few hours.

I'm a bit disappointed that almost nobody wants to try Istaria, it seems to have a few unique things, but the game seems almost like everything but dead Anyways, really looking forward to this, it's been a while since I was this excited.
I am definitely in my man. I just have to receive my copy of Windows 7 in the mail and configure it through bootcamp, and then I will be good to go. I have reviewed a LOT of gameplay videos and I would be up for EQ II, Aion, AoC, Vanguard, etc.
Unfortunately, I am a tax attorney and our year end is very busy, so I might not be logged very much during the weeknights. Weekends would be better for me, especially through January or so. I hope that is ok with you guys.

I share your emotions, buddy.

This is pretty much my story as well. I have to say, I actually didn't mind "grinding" at all when I was with a group of great funny people. Quests were there to take a break from grinding, as were the Battlegrounds. How come no one can make a game as well thought out as DAoC nowadays?
How come a company would possibly release Trials of Atlantis as an expansion for Dark Age of Camelot? :P
I loved ToA. Some people in the DAoC community was trying to make DAoC a pure PvP game, while people like me wanted a healthy balance. ToA gave people who liked PvE more reasons to play at end game, which was nice, since RvRing gets boring after so long. So getting artifacts, completing ML's, and doing ML raids was a fun diversion.

I still am 100% behind Vanguard, because it is the only MMO since DAoC that has ever held my interest and given me that oldschool feel. The last night of beta, I grouped with a newbie ranger and a warrior and we just killed trees in the woods while talking. That NEVER happens anymore in quest grind MMOs. When would this thing be happening? Because despite Vanguard not really going anywhere, and Darkfall holding my interest, I'd totally be up for it after I get out of University.

Hehe that's why I typed almost nobody, I'm just suprised really more than disappointed, seeing as most of us have played mmorpgs for a long I thought maybe more people had tried Horizons(istaria). But vanguard is probably the mmorpg I like the most, or want to like, but it's so hard with few people to play. But either way, yahho!

It may be wise to see his in game name first before such an offer. What if he calls himself Bern_E_MayDoff?
So... Name, people? We should concentrate on that.
Do you like "The Road/Path Ahead" or not?

I noticed one game that seems to be missing entirely from your list. This is a game Ive personally found to be absolutely amazing from beginning onward. The Chronicles of Spellborn +Very customizable characters +Any character can use any gear, and upgrade the gear to suit them +Free Form Combat - No Autotargeting, no click and forget gameplay. +Arena and Freeform based PvP. Arena PvP gets you points which you can apply towards some unique items. You can join a league, or go solo. +Easy leveling curve, not a real grinder. +Quests are actually fun, not a bunch of lame "Kill 20 small snails and get a potion of healing" +Not a traditional fantasy setting. Feels almost steampunk, but not like Neo Steam. +The game in its current state is 100% Free -Rotating Combat Bar is tough to get the hang of, this deters most new players who are used to a static skill interface -Low populations leave people playing solo alot. -Not alot of endgame content currently (though this is supposed to be in development) -Servers go offline at random times due to maintenance, poor communication from Acclaim on when this happens -Acclaim is a publisher. Acclaim sucks. If this game didnt rock I would not play it soley based on this reason. -The game is being redeveloped as a free to play game with a mall. -Graphics are gorgeous, but stylized. Either you appreciate the style or you dont. Most asian MMO fans think the characters are ugly.
We have kind of an unspoken rule here - no F2P's, except DDO.
Meh your loss to not give this one a try. Im normally not a F2P gamer myself. The best games I have played were UO, Asheron's Call, AC2, Shadowbane, and for better or worse Darkfall. Im a PvPer and an explorer by nature. Ive played DDO, and its a fun game, but not really too guild oriented. More suited for a group of buddies who wanna play a vid game together over an hour after work. Too bad too, I'm a real fan of Turbines products and think generally they do a fantastic job.
TCOS for me brings back that feeling I got in AC and AC2, specifically, and while I feel its unfortunate this game had to go the F2P route due to poor release decisions made by the publishers, the game itself is still quite good.
I've looked at Ryzom for my guild, and might try it. I hate to get sucked into a mediocre game though only to find out it sucks after paying for 4 months. Since Spellborn is free and fun my desire to pay for a product has been lessened, though I may try it.

I just don't like meaningful cash shops in general. They usually mean, that you spend more money, than a sub. At least DDO gives you all content + 500 points for a standard sub/

Downloading Eve/FFXI for trial this weekend
Will download EQ1/Ryzom next week
EQII/Vanguard - have played trials enough to know they're decent and would work for us
