That is a funny statement from Blizzard considering they copied Ultima and Everquest. (and others)
See you have to be a fool to listen to Blizzard here. This is exactly what they want other to do. Cant improve off of WOW if your main focus is on being different. Games fail this way.
He is exactly right and most of you been saying the same thing but when Blizzard says it then you have a problem. Please,Please... Darkfall and everything else that came out in the last year.

I am playing LOTRO now, been on & off since release. It feels more today than ever, like WoW, without the real PvP, but ALOT better graphics.
The ignorance of this community has found its home in this thread. The sheer elitism some people believe they or the games they play have is just asinine. If it has Blizzard anywhere in it, its automatically bad, wrong and deserving to be insulted and ridiculed.
Guess what folks. The games you play aren't any better than Blizzards. EVE is just Elite turned into an MMO, LotR and Warhammer Online were both created simply to lure in the fan-base of the table top game and books/movies respectively.
There are no original ideas left. Everything that can be done has already been done in some way, shape or form and pissing on a business because of a small resemblance to a short lived series from 20 years ago is just moronic.
The arguments have gotten so stale that when someone says WoW came out before Warhammer people bring up the table top game? Since when were the discussions here about table top gaming? It says MMORPG, not PnPRPG. They were right, WoW did come out before Warhammer did if you use the common sense God gave a rock and see they are talking about the Online game.
This community is the worst representation of the MMO world currently in existence on the net. The childish whines and cheap shots abound without any real facts backing up the trash that spews forth from these forums like the in-bound pipe at a waste treatment plant. The only worthwhile part of this entire website are the articles written by true professionals in the industry, because the trash that inhabits the forums isn't fit to wipe even the ass of Smedley.
I've been around gaming of both types for almost 30 years and in all this time nothing has disgusted me more than the sewage that inhabits this forum. Hopefully this black hole of stupidity releases the handful of people who attempt to post intelligent, thoughtful and meaningful responses so that they can find a place where their words will be viewed by people who get it, instead of by the dregs of the internet that have washed up on this forsaken forum.
Enjoy your hell, children.

Yeah, keep lying to yourself just because you lack imagination. There are always original ideas to build from, RPG's and especially MMORPG's have no evolved to the point where nothing new can be created yet. Just because the genre is stagnant right now doesn't mean that there aren't any ideas left, it simply means that the companies are too scared to build off those ideas.

A perfect example of someone who just doesn't get it.
If you honestly think that all ideas have been used and tried and there's no room for innovation, you are completely lost.
If you honestly think that games like WoW should be COMMENDED for not having a single unique idea, and for having LESS features than games made 6 years before them, then you are lost.
If you think that this is all based on elitism, and not based on the fact that most of the original players of MMORPGs now longer have virtual worlds or games to play, and instead have to settle for broken up, casual, linear, instanced words, with 1/4 the features of games we played 10 years ago, then you are lost.
I'm not an elitist, I give credit to WoW for being a brilliant marketing manuever. It targetted the right people and had the largest ad campaign of any MMO in history when it launched, and it provided those people it targetted with a smple little casual game that wouldn't frustrate or turn them away.
I will NOT give them ANY credit for innovation, and I WILL solely blame them for stagnation of the industry, and death of the type of games that I like to play.
"Why do you care, let casual players enjoy their games" I do, but when it crosses over and crushes the games that I like, it becomes a concern, and an outright anger. As it stands now, we will never see a game even remotely close to what EQ1 was, and it's because of WoW.

Or better yet, if they are so innovating, then why not discuss their innovating ideas.
one thing can be said about Blizzard with no argument, they are successful.
Obviously they are doing something right. They may not be most creative, inventive but they are innovative. If their precedes did what Dustin Browder is saying in this interview, i think they would have been more successful.
"We're hardcore PC gamers," explains the project lead. "We play lots and lots of games made by lots and lots of developers. We try to look and analyze what is working for them in their game, or what is not working for them in their game."
He adds, "Is there anything about what they're doing that we can learn from, either what not to do or what to do? We're constantly looking at what other people are doing and trying to decide what's right for us and what makes sense for us."

And yet other games managed to be insanely successful WITHOUT ripping all their ideas from a pre determined successful formula. The WoW lead devs were all EQ players and it shows because WoW is, simply, a retarded baby version of EQ with a fourth of the features.

100% agree. Looking at you Alganon, the most shameless rip off of WoW in existence.
I wouldnt mind "WoW 2" with better GFX, new world, and more solo friendly content. WoW is the best, why not try make it even better in 2nd version?
